Well it's that time, I got about 34K out of the stock Goodyear’s, but after considering the limited choices as well as expensive prices for our stock tire size, I will most likely be going with a 275/45/20 set. It seems several of our members have changed to this size with good results. Your opinions are welcome, right now, the Hankook Ventus tires are my front-runners, but I am not set on those yet. I am trying to get as good a tire as I can but still not spend any more money than I have to, after all most any tire I look at will be better than the stock Goodyear’s, so it's a no loose situation for me, thanks in advance :) :thx

I had Cooper Dicoverer H/T Plus tires put on my truck I had before and was pleased. I've had good luck with coopers in the past. Good quality and not too expensive:

The zeon series look pretty sharp, too.

I did the Kelly Safari AWR to save some money. They looked agressive, performed well on the roads and snow, but were always cupping and extremely noisy, and never made the warranty milage. Next time around I went with the Goodyear Fortera Silent Armor. I have about 10,000 on them and absolutely love them. Quiet as can be, great traction, and look agressive. I went for the chaper tire on my first replacement, but was disappointed. Remember you always get what you pay for!

The Hankooks are great tires. They're high-performance rated, which is what you'll want with your SS, perform well in most weather conditions and very sporty looking with the ribbed side-walls and unique tread. I've had them on my Envoy for 2 years, including running them in the Winter with no problems. (Keep in mind you can only rotate front to back, unless you unmount the tires and flip them as they employ a directional tread design).

Prior tire on my 20s were Goodyear (aka good for a year) Eagles GTII tires, which they shouldn't be allowed to tout as an all season tire! - God awful in cold wet weather, let alone snow. They also had an annoying pitched hum at speed, where the Ventus are quiet.

The Continentals that came on mine were wearing just fine (41K) until I ran over a rock and puntured the tread (small rock, go figure). I have Goodyear Fortera's now. Good looking tire, 60K mile, quiet. I like them. Cost around $650-$700.

I'd say 265/50/20 in BF Goodrich KDW2s... good reviews and a SWEET lookin' tread!

Thanks for the input, I did decide to go with the Hankooks, they look real nice, and so far (40 miles) they feel real nice too, pics and more details to follow.

BTW, if anybody is looking for tires in the next few days, Pep Boys has buy 4 and get 1 free rebate, this brings the deal within a few dollars of going mail order, and having a local shop just mount them. To me the $30 or so I would have saved going that route was not worth the hassle this time.

However the rebate ends on 9/1/07 so hurry.

Geez, I must be doing something wrong.....My original tires have 43K on them, and the look like they still have 10-15K of tread left. I rotate them every 10K, and I have not done a single burnout (AWD) since new.....

That's odd. My father-in-law lives in Statesville, N.C. and he doesn't get many miles out of his tires either. He couldn't believe that I got 73K miles out of a set of tires on my truck here in Florida, while he only got 36K out of the same tire on a like model truck. I wonder if the composition of the asphalt is that much more abrasive up there?

I got about 14K out of my OEM Eagle RSAs on my TBSS before they were down to the wear bars. I don't do burnouts and had them rotated 3 times. I don't toss it around corners like a sports car, typically. I don't necessarily baby it, though.

But my wife got 18K out of the OEM Eagle RSAs on our Lexus RX330. Which you KNOW isn't doing burnouts, or being driven aggressively. Between the car, the aggressive VSC computers, and the driver, it's just not possible.

I believe hot roads with abrasive composition in South Florida tends to eat tires quicker than other roads. I believe it's especially unfriendly to Eagle RSAs.

Both cars are working much better with their replacement Michelins. The Lexus already put 18K on Michelins, equaling the old tires, and they don't look worn in the slightest.

The TBSS only has 2K on the Michelin Latitudes, so I have no indication of how well they will wear....but it sure rides and drives better.

i had my original goodyear rsa's changed at about 6k under warranty for the michelin diamaris in the stock size. the lasted till i hit 41k on the odo. I just had the bridgestone dueler h/p sport 275/45/20 installed. the look the the dueler h/p sport is different on the 20's than on the smaller diameter they have. very nice look, the tires do not let loose as much (especially when making turns) either from the bigger size or better tire grip. Bridgestone had a $100 rebate on a set of four. I got the shipped for $715.00 before the $100 rebate.

I'm looking for replacement tires and would like to go with Coopers, I have had them in the past and liked the Discoverer HT. Unfortunately, Cooper does not have 255 50 20s. I'm looking at other options and sizes. I truly dislike Goodyear tires. Bad treadwear (with proper rotation) and loud.

I guess it really comes down to individual experiences and expectations for tires. I have become a rather huge fan of Goodyeaer because I have had great experiences with treadwear, along with how even the tread wears. The only Goodyears that I have not liked due to noise were the Eagle LS's. I know that Tire Rack has the stock RSA's really cheap, and will probably be the route i'll go myself in about 5-6k miles since some of those other tires are pretty expensive.

Cripes, my wife drives the truck like its an egg cart and I have 22k on the stockers and they are at on average .3 tread depth and down to the wear bars. WTF AWD here. Trying to decide between the Hankook ventus ST06 and the yokahama prada in 265/50/20

I'm at 54K now on the stock Goodyears. I'm almost to the wear bars, and it is winter here in Michigan. Traction in the snow is definately not as good as last year, but the AWD helps in the snow. Sometime between now and Spring I will have to replace them. I just did the Brakes at 53K. Had to replace the rotors as well as the pads. Bought the parts from a Dealer, no local autoparts store could get what I needed. Put em on myself, it was easy....Parts cost $375.......I can get 4 Goodyears from a local salvage yard that came off an SS for $350, but they have 14K on them. The guy that runs the yard is a good friend, and I have bought all my tires from him for years. He says the 20 inchers are hard to come by. I guess I'll wait a bit longer...

STICK WITH THE GOODYEARS'S!

I have had Goodyears on every car that I have owned. I have never had a problem. As a active law officer , I had & have Goodyears on my patrol cars. I have driven at high speeds, in sleet, snow, glare ice, mud, Goodyears have nerver let me down. If I can put my very life on the line with these tires, I can have them on my personal cars. I traded in a 99 Olds Cutlass on my 07 LS Trail Blazer. The Olds had Eagle GT HP's that had over 45000 miles. I got rid of the Michelins that came as standard, and put Goodyear Wranglers on.

One thing that must be rembered with Goodyears, you must rotate them about every 3000 miles & check the tire pressure on them every week .

When it comes to tires, I think that the type of tire is going to be more important than just buying a tire from your favourite brand. Just with many different brands, there are tires for different purposes and different budgets. I happen to really LOVE Goodyear RSA's, Eagle LS's, Eagle F1, and especially those new Eagle Response Edge tires that I just put on my Focus. However, I really hate Goodyear tires like the Regatta, Integrity(integrity MY ASS), and GT HP's. I imagine if you experienced the better tires from Goodyear like me, that is why you probably like them so much. Likewise if you were to experience the crappier of the tires from Goodyear, you might not have as high of an opinion.

Well after about eight thousand miles, and after just taking the big NC to OH road trip for Christmas, I'll have to say that I am well pleased with the 275/45/20 Hankook Ventus tires I purchased. They perform well in all conditions, are GREAT in the rain (lots of that this past week, and at interstate (70+) speeds), and they are still quite. I will say I would rate them equal or better for wet weather traction and resistance to hydroplaning to the stock GYs (a big point for me). For the price I paid, and the high expectations I had they certainly do not dissapoint. :m2:

I put on the toyo proxes S/T in stock size. No complaints, no speedo error that I can see (speedo and garmin agree). much better handling than the stockers in wet and dry, not noisy, so far so good.

If it has the Goodyear name on it, I will try it BEFORE ANY OTHER BRAND.
I do not put my faith is something this imporant lightly! No Goodyear brand has ever failed me. However, YOU have to do YOUR part. That part is the proper maintence. To me it is really funny how people want to forget this very imporant part!

I think you'll be happy Joe, I really like the wet performance, the quite ride and the handling. I was amazed at the lack of hydroplaning at highway speeds, the GYs even when new, didn’t handle this good. :m2:

I will say this, I have had many high performance cars, and many came with equpped with Goodyear tires, while I never experienced a premature failure with a Goodyear product, I have also never experienced a premature failure with ANY name brand tire. While maintenance is a paramount concern, and anyone should, in their own best interest guage rotate and balance their tires on a regular basis, I would have to say I have NEVER been impressed with a Goodyear product. Maybe I have been driving the wrong GYs, but everytime I change tires, I can't wait to get rid of the Goodyears, and get on to something better, again, :m2:

I can't knock the Goodyears. I've put many a hard mile on them. No, they are not a high mileage tire, but I've seen/experienced some awesome performance with them. Myself and another Deputy went around a 45 mph curve at 110 mph one night. The rearend was stepping out a little and we came out of it a bit sideways, but any other tire I think would have let go completely!

To be fair, a lot of your impression is going to depend on the type of Goodyear tire and whether it was matched properly to your driving expectations. Goodyears that I especially love are the Eagle Response Edge touring, and their Eagle F1's. Of course neither of those are cheap either. I have to say that i'm fairly happy with my current RSA's, but there just don't seem to be many options for those of us who have no intention of changing to a different tire size. I just wish these RSA's would have had more life to them as i'm at 24k miles and slowly bur surely approaching the wear bars.

Good luck with the tires. Good choice too. I can't for the life of me understand the Goodyear lovers. Like the others, I'm in law enforcement, and I hate all Goodyears(I love the "Good for a year" caption). My Dept. is bound by contract with Goodyear and I am the Fleet Superviser. We run 02-08 Ford Explorers with different Goodyear models Wrangler,Eagle, Fortera etc. We have had premature wear, blowouts, and sidewall bubbles. Only one of our cruisers got Michelin Cross Terrains because the shop was out of Goodyears, and they have been excellent. I run Bridgestone Duelers H/T on my Envoy and they are pretty good as well(30k on them and still slightly above wear bars). Just my :m2:

I too am in law enforcement. I'm a Deputy Sheriff here in Florida. Like your agency, we are under government contract for our tire purchases. Late last year the contract went to Firestone. We were with Goodyear for many years prior to that. I can find little bad to say about Goodyear, with the exception of them wearing out at around 20-30K miles, but they are a soft rubber, high traction tire. I am not criticizing other brands of tires, as I have not driven them the way I have driven the Goodyears. I have Yokahomas on my Corvette but I don't drive it as hard as I drive my patrol car, so I can't really give you a comparison. All I'm saying is I know the Goodyears are a very capable tire and I think it's safe to say that I drive them a lot harder than most Trailvoy Alumni do. Manufacturers and consumers tire test may indicate other tires as being superior, but I'm not thinking it's by much. As I stated in another post, I was with another Deputy and we took a 45 mph curve at 110 mph one night (responding to a homicide call) and the tires got us through it, although we came out of it a bit sideways. On a side note, since we switched to Firestone, another Deputy hit a pothole at 60 mph and blew a front tire, causing him to lose control. The car swapped ends and hit a telephone pole backwards, breaking the pole in half and totaling a 2007 Crown Vic. Not saying it wouldn't have happened with Goodyears, but it's the first tire failure we've had in the last twenty years that resulted in a crash. I even ran over a railroad spike at around 70 mph that busted the tire (and threw the spike through the inner wheel well) but the tire didn't blow out, just went flat real fast. We have Forteras on our Trailblazer now, I gave up the Continentals after I ran over a 1 inch rock that punctured the tread, fortunatly at low speed.

I'm sure that Goodyear has some decent products, or they wouldn't be around for so long. I guess my poor rating of Goodyear are because we mostly use lower rated, entrance level tires. I'm sure the F1's and gatorbacks are great tires. However, when comparing tires of equal money- I think you can do better with tires from Yokohama, Michelin, Bridgstone etc. I hope you don't take corners like that too often(homocide call) because you can't help anyone when your cruiser is lying on it's roof(Officer safety first). STAY SAFE!

Can you guys recommend a good tire for a 2WD TBSS that will see snow? We are moving to Colorado (Denver or CO Springs) in the summer, so we need an all-season. We will probably get dedicated snow tires on some 17"'s if it really is dangerous. The TBSS is a lease for another 2 years, so I'd like to get by with some decent all seasons. We plan to drive the TBSS to CO in March, so it will probably see some snow. What would you guys do?

The problem I can see there is that you are going to a wider set of tires, which has the potential of increasing difficulties in snow. I used to know someone who lived out in CO, and you may just have to go with a set of dedicated snow tires if everything he has told me about their winter storms is true. No matter what kind of all seasons you get, nothing can approach the effectiveness of dedicated snow tires in deep snow.

For you guys that buy the tires online, where do you get them balanced/mounted? I bought tires for my GTO on tirerack and Big O Tires charged over $85 to mount them. There must be a cheaper option!

I got mine done here at a local shop, cost 15 a piece. thats dismounting the old, mount and balance the new, some places charge extra because it is a 20 inch tire as well.

I got my Hankooks at Pep Boys, but they scratched 3 out of 4 of my wheels :hissy: :hissy:, so be careful with Pep Boys, the service manager would'nt do anything for me either, gave it the old "well we did'nt do it" routine, I know they did it, but had no way to prove it!!:duh: I'm not a big Pep Boys fan any longer, but the Hankooks are great tires, and the price I got them for was good as well, just did'nt know the price included free wheel customization :mad:!

Welp, just went to Discount Tire. They originally wanted $710 OTD for the Hankook RH06 275/45/20. I asked him how much to mount/balance if I buy the tires myself and bring them in. He said about $110-120 since they are 20's. I then had the guy go to www.onlinetires.com and showed him I can get them for $464 shipped and then pay him $120 to install them. and still save over $100 from their original $710.

He then requoted me $580 OTD. So I thought that was fair since I don't have to deal with the hassle of shipping tires to my house and working with an online company I've never dealt with. Just a little cheaper than the Pepboys deal plus no mail in rebate.

Should get these installed on Saturday. Will let you know what I think.

So definitely have Discount Tire price match!!!

Thanks for the feedback fellas.

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but I need tires in the spring and I'm painting my rims and was thinking about going with the BFG All-Terrain K/O's. Anyone have experience with these?

This has been a very disappointing winter so far as we havn't gotten any meaningful snowfall yet. It is getting really annoying because we keep getting a dusting here and there, and they literally bleach the streets white with excessive salt, which gets kicked up and even chipped the windshield on my Focus. Snow damnit!

Drove in a lot of rain this past weekend with the new Hankooks. They did great, didn't sweat going the speed limit and more :)

I am fully convinced the Pirelli Scorpion ATR is the best tire I have ever owned. (255/70/16) Well worth the $133 a Piece (free shipping).

You can have our snow. All of it. Take it! Now! I'm really tired of it. :P

I'd be happy to take it, although i'm uncertain how to transfer it here. We had another disappointing winter storm warning last night that yield 0 snow, and a bunch of ice that melted really quickly because the temperatures rose throughout the night :hissy:

SNOW DAMNIT!

I have to agree, I would love a heavy snow fall here... most we have gotten in one storm is about 3 inches this year

That's nothing, it's gonna be in the 70's here this weekend! But I do like the Goodyear Fortera's that I bought. Got about 12K miles on them now, wearing even, not noisy, no problems in the rain.
