OK, a lot of people used to go with the lowest thermostat they could, as a way to get the intake charge as cool as they could. I'd never go as cool as a 160, because the oils and all don't reach their optimum temp, and things wear more. But, I think going a little cooler could help...to a 180. I've read on here that factory is a 180, but it can't be. My gauge sits right at 195 regularly...and the computers at work (advance auto) call for a 195. I've mentioned before that my temps have crept up on the beach...but I think it's just because the fan clutch may have been going bad even then, or just plain couldn't keep up. Either way, I want to go witha 180 thermostat...and, to cut to the chase, finally...where can I get one? Thanks

Edit: After doing a little reading, I found that Motorad, might make something for us...and, that not many people think that cooler thermostats are a good idea. Now, just dropping in a cooler thermostat will certainly cause some issues with running rich, and in general, performance issues. I fully plan to have PCM for less retune the pcm, if it's even feasable. Now that I think about it though...I really think that my fan clutch just sucks...and if I went with a new Efan conversion, I'd fix most of my problems with temps creeping up. Oh well...I'd still like to do both.

The stock t-stat is ~187*. If you put in a lower t-stat without adjusting the fans you are more than likely gonna runner hotter. Dropping to a 180* t-stat isnt worth the trouble.

I put a 160* t-stat in my 6.0HD for the summer here, and until I got the Predator to adjust the fan setting correctly, it actually ran hotter than stock.

I would say you are better off getting the tune, and have them change your fan engagement settings to engage more sooner.

Keep in mind that your guage may be lying to you. My truck ('06 TBSS)routinely says it's running at 100°C when in actuallity it's running at 90°C according to the dashhawk. (as you will find if you search the forums, this is well documented)

I've read that GM does this to stop complaints from idiots who don't know that 90°C is the ideal temp for these motors or that engines will run slightly hotter or cooler depending on traffic and load conditions...

Apparently anything from 85 - 105C shows as 100C on the guage.

...and for the record, it really pisses me off that they mess with readout... I didn't buy a truck with analog guages just so they could turn them into fancier looking idiot lights...

I'm still mixed on the issue, and I'll probably just try going with the Efans by themselves first, and see how that does, and then get a cooler thermostat if need be. I've been thinking about it a lot, and really, going with a cooler thermostat, for the reason I was going to, is basically banking on the engine overheating. I would much rather it just run at the right temp the whole time...but, if under harsh conditions (beach, offroading in general, evn heavy traffic) my temps creep up, I may still go cooler, and see if it helps. I'd really much rather keep it running at the right temp all the time anyway.
