View Full Version : How hard to change the intake manifold?
Well I think I figured out my surging idle and SES problem. My intake manifold has a crack in it by the firewall. I could feel the vacuum with my hand. I also sprayed some starting fluid down there and the RPM's changed. After these two checks I'm pretty sure that is my problem.
So how hard is it to remove the intake manifold? Looks like I'll have to pull apart the drivers side of the engine & engine bay to get at the manifold. After that how hard is it to pull the intake? Does it have reusable gaskets or does it have rubber gaskets?
I'm going to look at doing the cheap route & just epoxy up the crack and bolt it back on. I've done that with other broken plastic parts with good results. I bought this wrecked & evidentaly missed this.
Thanks
Jeremy

JB Weld!
There are complete engine assemblies for sale on eBay for $400 or so... maybe pick up a good used manifold at a salvage yard for cheap.

I have a Chilton SUV service manual for TBs up to 03, but the manifold cant have changed much between years. I can scan the page(s) for you in a pdf and email them to you if you want. It isnt the TB specific manual, but the whole manual that covers everything from Lexus to GM to Dodge.

if you do end up doing this yourself, can you take a picture of the manifold and port openings. Im trying to do some custom headers and im looking for as many pics as I can before I start the process, please post some up

Sure, I will scan my book in and post a link to them for a few weeks.
Wait, just did that, the links will be up in a few min.
Links here: (Sorry for the not-so-great quality, but they are decent enough to get the idea)

I took a look at the pics. Looks to me like the intake manifold for a V8 in the first two, and the exhaust manifold for the I6 in the 3rd.

Page 2 says 4.3L engine. ala S10 blazer I didn't read into it that far. Knew it was a V-something anyway... Just looking at the pics.

Yep, the manual is for all of the Blazers, Envoys (new and old body), Jimmys, and TrailBlazers. Only with the I6 engine though, interesting the 5.3L V8 isnt in there, but to me it doesnt matter.
I got the intake removed, hole fixed and back on this friday night. It took me about 3-4 hours to get it done. Went really pretty good. Like all new vehicles it was a tight fit getting it to come out once it was loose. I didn't remove the alternator at 1st, but would do that right away if I have to do it again. I didn't realize it when I fixed it the 1st time but the intake has a layer of insulation around it & then a plastic shell covering it. I patched the covering, but not the intake itself. When it was in the wreck the intake hit one of the bolts on the firewall and poked a hole. Been running great since and no more light now.
Thanks for the info
