Guys, I know Chevy made the G80 option with the Eaton Locking rear diff. Did Chevy give an option for the front diff as well? If not, are their any lockers or LSD units for the front drive axel?

I am also looking to get rid of my darm 3.42 and replace them with 3.73 gears. Possible? Any problems since the diff is in the oil pan? I know I have to change front and rear at the same time, and I would not be doing this myself, but having it done at a local transmission shop.

If anyone has any information on this subject, please chime in. Thanks.:undecided

Switching gears was brought up before and I think someone mentioned expensive and not worth it if you have 4WD.

I do have 4x4 but I do not have any lockers front or rear. Now I do plan on taking this truck out in soft sand as well as mud, but not much roch crawling. Lets say I keep the 3.42 gears, but add a locker to the rear, or an LSD ot the front. This will definately help my offroad abilities. Is there an option for an LSD for the front, or can a take a G80 carrier from a wrecked TB with the G80 option and apply it to my 3.42 rear end?

I don't have G80 on my TB and I research putting a locker in and it would cost around $800. There are a few 4x4 stores on line that offer the parts for it.

Dave, I have seen some 3.73 ring and pinion sets on www.car-parts.com (http://www.car-parts.com) with locking carrier for as low as $150. If i pick one up there, all i would need to do is take it to my shop and have them install. Is that correct? I think that would surely cost less than $800 and would also be a direct GM unit with part numbers in case anything ever happened to it.

It could be. I lost interest when the local dealer (not GM) said around $800. Let us know what you find out.

After you get the mechanical stuff done, then you need to get the PCM reprogrammed for the 3.73 ratio so speedometer and shift points will be right. Since it was an option a dealer should be able to do it. For a price.

Does it have to be reprogrammed by a dealer? Cant a tire shop also change that for you since they can reprogram the speedo for larger tires.

Not unless they have a Tech 2 programmer, as that is what is needed to program virtually everything on the TBs. Costs about $4800, I think that is what Esh said in another thread.

geneelder-

I just talked with my Chevy dealer, and they verified that the S10 and Trailblazer share the same FRONT ring and pinion gear set (7.2") and differential.

I do know that PowerTrax makes a front locking differential (Lock-Right Locker) for the S10. This could in theory, work for the Trailblazer since they already use the same front differential.

Check this link out for the front axle: http://completeoffroad.com/wsm/c-130_gm_72_ifs_rev_cut_s10s15_trailblazer.html

Check this link out for the rear axle: http://completeoffroad.com/wsm/c-129_gm_80_trailblazer__envoy.html

And yes, you'll probably have to get your PCM reprogrammed for the shorter gearing.

Hope this helps!!

man thats the best link ive ever seen in trailvoy!! thanks for it!

Just out of curiousity if you know, it shows there is a 4.56 gear for a Trailblazer 4X4, Rear only. What I've heard is u need to change the front and rear and they don't have a 4.56 for the front!?!?

kinda confusing, any ideas around this?

The 4.56 is actually for the front only...

And yes, you'd need to change out both the front and rear gear sets.

I'm not sure about how to get a 4.56 rear for the Trailblazer... the S10 uses a slightly smaller diameter rear gear set.

Perhaps contact Yukon Gear and ask them if they could add it to their line up offering, but with the low demand, I don't think they'd be willing to take the initial investment on that.

The 4.56 is a pretty short gearing anyways, I'd go with a 4.10 as the shortest gearing. :m2:
