We just had our Envoy's water pump replaced at 50,000 miles. Seems really early to have one go bad. Anyone else have this problem? Does anyone know if there is something else that may go wrong because of the water pump failing?
This just worries me.

I've seen many GM vehicles have water pumps replaced around 50k miles. Some go 150k, some leak at 30k. It's really hard to say what's "normal" with GM anymore!!

I had mine replaced @ 68K due to a worn water pump bearing that was causing a rumbling noise that I could hear from the front of the engine.

On a Chevelle I had (many many moons ago), the water pump shaft broke off at 17,000 miles half-way between Dallas and Laredo on a Saturday afternoon, in Universal City, Tx. Talk about bad timing for a defective part to fail!

I replaced my water pump at around 60-65k. It was on a beautifull sunny day coming back home from boating all day..... and then And then the day turned gray when the water pump broke:mad:.

I had our fan clutch go out at 60K miles on our 03 XL SLT. After it was replaced the engine was still noisy. It sound like a belt wasn't quite right.
I took it to the dealership two times and they stated that nothing was wrong and that the new clutch was just noisier. That made no sense so I took it to another dealership that found the issue in a couple of minutes. The bearing in the water pump was going and the fan was visibily loose and moving around.
The mechanic stated that he often sees the bearing go soon after the fan clutch is replaced. He also stated that they replace a lot of fan clutches (this was said when I was alone with him with no service manager around).
Besides that issue he also showed me where my differential was leaking oil (I did have oil on my garage floor). He said they see those three issues quite often on early Envoys.
Luckily I had purchased the GMPP for $900 so for all three repairs I was out a total of $1300. The truck now runs like new again. We hope we are good for another two years.

Mine went at 98,000. Sounded like a freight train when the engine was revved. Replaced it before it was leaking.

kendrid........ u may be right on!!!
when my clutch was installed------ several thousand miles later- my water pump went out.......... bearings - and a floppy fan.......
or was it the water pump 1st... then my clutch....
ill have to check my records...... but it makes sense that to remove that fan clutch off the water pump, may damage the bearings......hmmmmmmmm

I installed E-fans on mine at 11,774 miles. Do you think I might get longer than normal water pump life since I don't have the stock fan?

:confused:I just replaced my water pump on my 03 T/B LTZ, I found out that I had to drop the rad out to replace it because I could not pull out the shroud to move the fan enough, but then I got smart a little trim on the shroud and I pulled out the fan and the shroud without taking out the Rad...I had 115000km on when I had to replace...

Hey
I have the same thing with that loud rumble niose in front.
Only when i first start the tb and i turn on the ac and rev up the motor thats when the noise starts it sounds like the fan hitting and i can smell the plastic and dust when it hits but i cant see any marks on the fan.
I too replaced my cluch fan and this started to happen.
My fan does not seem that loose ether.
Can any one help before i go to the stealership.

I would think so....whatever you can do to take a load off the bearings/seals in the pump should make it last longer.

your fan shaft may be wobbleing.
also check the sides of your serpentine belt.
as the fan wobbles. it moves the belt- and it rubs up against one of the pulleys. You may see rubbery shavings in the area of the pulley.
Mine went around 60K. Firestone said that it was pretty much average for GM trucks.

Could a bad water pump do this?

My mechanic is replacing the water pump on the '05 TB LS tomorrow. The bearings in the assembly is failing, causing the fan to wobble. I've got about 90k miles logged.
Would it be wise to replace the fan clutch at the same time?

I would, since the mechanic has to remove it to get to the water pump.

Thanks for the quick reply EnvoyFan. I'll have him replace the clutch while he's in there.

You prolly already know this, but there are several part numbers and versions of the fan clutch. Make sure mechanic gets the latest part number that is manufactured.

The water pump went on my '04 at the same mileage. I'm still running on the original fan clutch at 145,000. Only do the fan clutch if he's going to save you a lot of money.
Replaced the pump on my 04 TB last week its only got 45 K miles on it
Reading through this thread maybey I should have changed the fan clutch as well?

Yup, I just had mine replaced at 58,000 miles, so just a little more than you. It didnt make any strange noises or anything, just noticed a coolant loss, and was told that the water pump was leaking and needed to be replaced. Seems to be running fine right now.

My Denali's is being replaced today for the same reason at 45k miles. No noises or cooling problems, just dried up coolant on the top. At least I get to use my extended warranty since I haven't used it yet. Heck, I haven't had to use the factory warranty except for once.

so far i've had to replace my pump two times and my fan clutch once. make sure when u guys replace ur pump to apply lock tight on the bolts cuz when i replaced mine i didnt and the bolts came loose so it started leaking on me. talk about being mad!!!!!! just a few weeks ago i smelled that burn coolant again so i thought it was my pump again so i took the fan and pulley apart to check it again and it was nor the pump, now its the timing chain cover. for some reason the bottom right hand bolts on the cover became loose so it started leaking. i thightened them but the seal is bad so it still leaks. now i have to figure out how to replace that seal.:hissy::mad::confused:

my water pump has some play which causes it to make that slight wobble/growl noise, however the fan is not hitting anything nor is the belt rubbing (just a matter of time i know);is there a risk for damage driving it like this?

I'd like to know this too, 'cause it looks like I'm about due (got the noisy rumble with antifreeze leak and semi-wobbly fan, 45k miles).
Also, can anyone provide a round-about average price for dealer repair of water pump (and maybe fan clutch)?
I'd like to know whether or not they're sticking it to me :duh:.
Thanks!!!

I did some searching and here's what I found on the forum:
You might get some experiences here, and I seem to remember charges like $300-400, but it heavily depends on if you use a dealer or an honest independent mechanic.
I'm going to only inquire about the water pump and hope for the best. I'll cross my fingers.

I just had a quote done at my local GM dealer in Calgary Canada, labor and parts for waterpump was over 1200 CAD, I ended up having it done for 500 CAD at an independant mech.

mine is being replaced today at an independant shop for $691 with new belts. I just returned from a 2700 mile round trip to Michigan...most of it at 75mph+. 76k miles, my fan clutch was replaced at 5k miles under warranty.
