View Full Version : Is Saab (GM) Crazy?!?!

OK call me silly (a good possibility), but 50K for a TBSS seems a bit much, I mean I like mine a LOT but come on what makes the Saab (sob-bing :sadcry: if I paid that much for it) 15 or 20K better? You gotta admit, that's a lot of mod money!
It'll appeal to those owners that what more status and not a Chevy. Anotherwards, the ones that don't know much about cars.

Just my :m2: ... I don't think the Saab is that appealing at all. The front end is decent, but the rest of the exterior is just a TB with different wheels. I don't like the interior differences. Wasting a cupholder for the classic Saab ignition switch. I don't like the gauges. But like I said, just my :m2:.

Actually, the wheels are the exact same.

Maybe the roof rack is worth $10k? :D
It will be much more collectable, though.

Some people will pay anything for a name. They think it gives them status. Okay, you have your status, I think I'll just be one of the regular guys!
I personally like the Saab exterior, with the ROUND wheel wells and tight bumper to body panel fit and finish. But no way would I pay that kind of money for one. I could see a $1-2k, maybe a little more, premium for the differences in body panels and factory HIDs and such, but not $10-15k. Is there something extra the Saab has that the TBSS doesn't?
Oh yea, some of the Saab interior is nice, but ditto on the key placement, the flip-out in dash cup holder looks flimsy. An Envoy interior with plashes of real wood, would look much nicer and more befitting a luxury branded vehicle.

Some people pay the extra $ for the exclusivity. Paying extra for something that very few other people have is not a new concept. Some of us, myself included, would rather personalize our ride by doing mods and something different to it to make it different from everyone elses. Once again I think it boils down to personal preference, and if you got money to burn. You can pick them up fairly cheap barely used on ebay motors. If this thing sold for close to $50k new, I would pay the 24k for an 06 w/ 22k miles.

No turbo. The top engine in the new Saab is the LS2 just like the TBSS.

If I had the choice between a TB SS and a 9-7X Aero, well first Id drive both of them to see if there is any handling difference (heard the Aero is a little softer?) but if I had the extra $$ to blow Id get the Aero just because there really isnt anything like it. Its unique, and I have this bada$$ idea that a turboed-9-7X Aero kicking butt would be so cool on the streets. Getting beat by a Saab SUV is something else, even more embarrassing than the TB SS.
Thats my .02, dont get me wrong I love the TB SS but the Aero just has that appeal to it. I do NOT have that much $$ around, so its a mute point anyway. Ohh, and the center ignition would have to go, thats the cupholder I use all the time.
See how the grill is divided into three parts between the headlights? The one furthest toward the passenger side is open directly back to the air filter. It's quite a large opening.
The good news about the Saab's is that they're just like all other GM cars- discounts come often and come large... I was over $10k under MSRP on mine (<$32000). I was torn between the TBSS and the Saab 9-7X 5.3i(this was a few weeks before the Aero was announced :duh:). In the end I went with the Saab because I thought that it would be easier to take the 5.3 to the same power level as the SS that it would be to add HID's and a nicer interior to the TBSS.
Tim
By the way, the difference is $2,770 for the 5.3i over a similarly equipped TBSS and it's $6,425 ($3,655 over the 5.3i) for the Aero. That's quite a bit less than $10-15k, though it is still a large gap. One way to look at is you could have a Saab 9-7X Aero, or a TBSS with a magnacharger...
All Saab's also add: No charge scheduled maintenance for 3 years or 36k miles. 4 yrs/50k miles bumper to bumper warranty.

Hi,
New member here and just picked up a Saab 9-7x Aero two weeks ago. I actually drove a JGC SRT-8, TBSS, before buying the Saab. Was going to go with a TBSS, but there happened to be a Saab/Cadillac dealer across from were I work. There was a Aero on the lot and figured I'd give it a spin. I didn't like the jeep (too much sport - not enough utility). Really liked the TBSS and the AERO. With incentives the loaded Aero (with Nav etc) can be had for around 41K. Yes, it's more than a TBSS. Don't think it's 10K more than a equivalent TBSS (AWD, NAV, etc), but didn't get into pricing on the TBSS.
Why did I go with the SAAB? I just kinda wanted something different and just really liked it. Plus, Saab gave me about 1.5k more on my trade than my local Chevy dealer wanted to, although they just gave me a rough estimate. I also king of enjoy the "sleeper" status. It's fun seeing peoples faces driving a Saab that sounds like a vette. I think the looks are a very subjective thing, although it is better in person than pics. I didn't feel a huge difference in the ride from a TBSS. Warranty is 100k/5yrs.
I'm sure I'll take some heat for paying what I did for what is basically a remade TBSS - but at the end of the day i'm happy.

Does this have the exhaust on the side like the prototype pics? The back exhaust chokes up us Chevy guys...
Sleeper? No, A Sabb is not a sleeper. Do they make anything without a turbo? You could expect a Sabb to kick your butt at a stoplight. But a Non-Corvette Chevy and an SUV at that? That is the sleeper.

I got the prices off of the Saab website, and it really shocked me. I DO think the Saab is a really slick looking ride, some things I like better than the TBSS, but I just think there should not be such a difference in price between the two. All said, as long as we are happy with the money spent, that's all we can ask for, right?

Come on guys, a fully loaded TBSS stickers at almost 45k vs about 50k for the Saab, as priced from GM's website. Even the difference in the Yukon Denali and the Escalade is almost that much, but nobody makes a big deal about that. Also, besides the dash layout and the different body panels, is there anything on the Saab that you can't get on the Chevy? Just wondering, because that would make the difference even less. For the record, I would probably get the Saab, because I already like the regular model.

HIDs and a factory hood strut, instead of the prop-rod....both worthwhile features.

I agree that the differences between the TBSS and Aero may not be worth the extra $ for most. For me it was more a personal choice on something a little different, plus I liked the looks. A few things that may or may not make a difference for some (not a criteria when I bought my Aero) is Saab does give you a free loner car (for when the 4L70E explodes) and road side assistance.
As for the exhaust - looks to me to be the same a on the TBSS just with a oval tip instead of round. Now, the only question I have is if a TBSS tune (like vector) will work for a Aero.

The SAAB looks nice, Scott72 likes its looks and it fits his budget, I like the TBSS "Body Curves" and the "Chevy" look.
All of these GM styles have something that appeals to almost everyone, just pick what you like and can afford.
All of them are no doubt built well, relatively speaking. For me, less on the $ on the purchase of my truck means more $ for mods later.

Yeah, now we gonna get into the Ford vs Chevy thing. Well, I have one of each. I have seen many many posts on this very board about some of the problems some folks are having with their TB's. I have every confidence in my Chevy, but I can also tell you that my Ford (a 2003 F-250) has not been in the shop one time. Period. I've done my regular maintenance on it (oil, fluids, brakes, etc.), and the only thing that has been done is I've added a half a can of freon to the AC. Over 85,000 miles and counting. I did have the front brakes done, not because they were bad...they stopped the truck just fine, and had probably 40 percent of pad left. But they just squealed enough to annoy me. Other than that...nothing. Not even a tune-up yet. Though that's coming soon...again, not because it's running bad or anything, but it's about time...regular maintenance.
I've had two GM's prior to this that were absolute gems. We owned the first one since new in 88 and drove it to the ground until my son got hit and they totaled it. The other one we had new since 97 and just traded it in on the TB. I believe that most any car you buy will be a good car if you take care of it. You're gonna get a lemon every now and then, but please.
