There may be another thread about this, but i couldn't find it. So i bought a 40 series flowmaster muffler and I want to replace the stock one with the 40 series. I will be leaving the resonator on. Can anyone tell me if i can do this at home or if ill need a torch, welder, etc. In other words can it be done with a sawzall clamps and some pipe? (Just take the old one out and throw the new one in)

It CAN be done with a sawzall and some clamps, but I think you would be happier with welded connections.

As per my experience the clamps will come out loose due to the vibration so its better you go for weld

I would say no you don't want to do that. Because of the intense heat your exhaust pipes experience there is a lot of expanding and contracting going on you couldn't clamp them tight enough and you sure don't want them coming loose.JMO :m2:

What if i clamped it temporarily to see the sound and such and then to decide if i will keep the resonator or not? How long would be ok to keep a clamp?

the resonator removed on mine sounds better then with it still on i would install da muffler and also remove the coffee can hanging off the rear:yes:

what muffler do you have? how loud is it inside? I have a 2month old so it can't be too loud inside.

i haven't installed a muffler on mine yet but i get a nice tone without the resonator so i believe that if you were to take off the resonator and install the flowmaster 40 on it (which i believe is the loudest for the I6 TV correct me if im wrong)
it was just a suggestion :D

I called flowmaster today and am either going to get the delta flow (a little quiter) or the super 40 (i don't get the difference )
The resonator is gone and im going to put on a "secret" tip
I clamped a muffler system together once and it was the biggest mistake. I had nothing but trouble with leaks and broken connections.

I agree with most everyone else that welded is the sure way to go. But on my '88 GMC Sierra, I went through several exhaust set ups looking for the right sound and noise level after adding full headers. I only had a problem with clamps once. And as a matter of fact the factory exhaust had a clamp right in the middle of the exhaust system. So, I think if you are dilligent with checking the clamps every so often and use stainless hardware and at minimum grade 8 bolts. You should be ok. The factory exhaust is not complicated.
