Spark Plugs..Where are they?

I know this may sound like a silly question but I can not find my spark plugs....neither could the guy at the auto store. Are they hidden underneath something or am I just looking and not seeing?

Oh yeah, I have a 2003 GMC Envoy XL

you have to take off the black box looking thing on top of the motor.

I did that but did not see anything that looked like what I "thought" spark plugs looked like.

There were some connector looking things.....are those the plugs?

pull those connectors out, and the plugs are underneath. the last one can be a pain to get at though (at least it is for me)

each one of those electrical connectors attaches to a large rubber "stopper" that is inserted in the cylinder head, the stoppers contain ignition coils and have to be pulled out to access the spark plugs. The stoppers, called coilover packs, are attached with a bolt.

BTW, it is typical on a DOHC engine for the spark plugs to be deep in vertical holes on the top of the head, as opposed to just screwed into the side of the head, as in an old pushrod V-8.

Thanks everyone!

Also, are there plug wires or something as well? A friend keeps mentioning plug wires in addition to the spark plugs....

There are no plug wires. The plugs go directly into the coil packs which eliminated the need for wires.

You should probably choose another auto store. That one doesn't appear that they can be of any help. You should also buy a Chilton's or equivalent repair manual for the truck, so you can know what you are dealing with.

Well not every person is going to know where everything is on every car/truck out there. We all learn by seeing. I didn't know where they were till I went searching and now the only thing I haven't messed with are the body mounts but that will change soon

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I was looking for these dang things as well. When you say black cover, do you mean the black cover on the drivers side of the engine or the black cover that sits right on top that has the Vortec writing on it and where the air intake goes in?

Thanks!

Yes...the "Vortec" cover.
