Okay, so long story short...I moved from Michigan to Maryland...my mom has been driving my truck and had brake squealing.
She took it in because of other issues (when filled to full the damn thing would go to empty then bounce back and forth until it wasn't compeltely full)
So now they check the brakes and tell her it will be $292 to do the pads and they have "millimeters" left on them and it is oh so dangerous and she HAS to do it ASAP.
Can anyone help me to figure out where I can get some pads alot cheaper (searching websites like autozone doesnt work since SS is not an option) and then simply just do it when I am back in town in the next couple weeks or have a friend stop by and do it for her?
Thank you!!!

If the brakes are "squealing" then they are down to the wear indicators. So I take it they are not "Grinding" intot he rotors?
If the "squealing" just started, you could slightly bend the wear tab so as not to squeal unitl you get them done.
The cost may be to also cut/turnt he rotors and or other things as I am not sure what else would be involved..
Either way it sounds like you need brakes ..

Fill out your profile, I don't even know what year your truck is.

i would get it done, i paid around 800-900 to have all 4 done from a local shope which is just about dealer pricing. getting it done at the dealer has some advantages like they have to fix it if they mess something up or something goes wrong, and they "usually" know the vehicle best. other shops could make it worse and not do the correct job!

I understand that the rotors may need to be replaced as well. However, what I am saying is that my mom is already being awesome to take the lease from me until it is up but $300 to replace the pads (according to the stealership) seems insane to me.
Where would I look/Who makes some pads and/or rotors for it to hold it over until I turn it in on lease in May???

How many miles are on it? It being a 2007 I'm thinking your pads may be glazed, but I doubt they're worn out already, unless you drive like Dale Jr.!

It is a 2007 and stealership told my mom "there are only millimeters left" on the pads. It has just under 30k. And yes when I did drive it for about 24k I did drive a lil ummmm fast :)
It is funny though to see my 61 y/o mom in a TBSS that is debadged and out messin with kids in Mustangs :)

I do mine myself. If you've never had to resurface the rotors before they should be OK to turn. You can get ceramic pads well under $100.00. It's not rocket science, and you can save a bundle. Do you have any friends that work on their own rides? You could get a buddy to guide you through it and if you have to buy the brake tools, you still saved money in the long run.

I think he was reffering to his "old " TB. On a side note, Midas advertises a "Lifetime Gaurantee" on their brake jobs.

I think you should be able to buy the pads from the dealer, and if the rotors are still clean/smooth, you should be able to do the job on your own in your garage.

I've done brakes on my s10 and my buddies Acura RSX and never needed any "brake tools". Out of curiosity, what tools are you referring too?

All you need for these TB's would be a hex socket and maybe an auto bleeder kit if you don't have someone to help bleed the system. I've got all the "old" tools, brake pliers, mounting spring retaining tool, for the disc/drum setups. I still use these on trailer brakes.

Okay here is the problem...I live in Maryland now...mom is in Michigan. I would simply take the pad off go to autozone or something and say give me new ones. Then do it myself if I was there but I'm not going home until mid-end of January.
Looking for a place to get the pads to see if it is worth the cost of them just doing it so it is done and over with...

I'm a DIY type, I just bought front rotors (raybestos 580502) for $126.36 (shipping included) and front pads (Monroe ceramics CX1169) for $55.35 (shipping included and they even have a $20.00 rebate) from www.rockauto.com for a grand total of $161.71 for the rotors and pads. BTW, Rock Auto's service is great, so far I am really happy with them, name brand parts, for less $$
Just replacing pads is SIMPLE, and really not worth the price they are asking!! :m2: If the pads just started squealing then you have a bit of time, just tell your mom to take it easy on the brakes till you get there

So Raybestos does make rotors for the SS? That's good to know!

I am strongly against this advise...you will probably wind up paying more in the long run with their "lifetime" deal :bonk:
Also...if you got 30K on the OEM pads, you'll probably only get about 8K out of the autozone pads :duh:
$300 isn't that bad for new OEM front pads and turning the rotors :undecided Unfortunately that's the price if it can't wait until you get their :worried:
If she does wait until mid-January, I would get OEM's to replace them with
Also...dealers will warranty their brake job for 12 months or 12K miles

Hey, disc pads aren't too hard to do yourself, and if you want you can order from RockAuto (rockauto.com). I got Monroe Premium ceramic pads from them for about $48 for fronts (or backs) plus a rebate...see below. I have had them on the TB for about 2 months and I like them alot. Here's the listing I copied & pasted from their site for your SS:
MONROE Part # CX1169 {Premium Ceramic Pads (Monroe STOP & GO Promotion--Purchase Monroe Premium Brake Pads and receive a $20 Rebate (one per household)--See More Info page for details)}
Front;2WD;Original Equipment Replacement Recommendation.
I've bought some stuff from them, and their good to work w/ and ship fast.
Good luck :D

I gotta agree with petevw, Rock Auto gets an A+ from me, just installed the Monroe ceramic front pads (CX1169)($55.35 delivered and a $20 rebate, final price $35.55) and Raybestos front rotors (580502)($126.36 delivered, for the pair) all went well and the parts were first quality. Rock Auto shipped fast as petevw said, I had no issues, and their website rockauto.com has the TBSS listed in the models, so you know the parts you are looking at will work on your TBSS. Many websites don't even list the TBSS, so you know there is a question if it's the correct part or not.
I have a feeling that once the stealership gets your truck on the lift the rotors will also have to be changed, as it seems the pads GM put on the TBSS are fairly agressive, and eat rotors quickly, most likely the bill will be more than twice the $292 estimate, so it's not just the estimated price, it's the final price, and I'll bet it will be MUCH higher they will also hit you for the new rotors, at their stealer price. Just my 2 cents.

Have her get a second opinion. I'd be pixxed to find out the pads were only glazed if I spent $300.00. By the way, hard braking from high speed is what causes glazing, does this describe your driving habits? If they squeal with every application, you're probably worn down to the wear indicators. If it squeal "sometimes" they may just be glazed. Or even have a friend (someone you trust that has a little automotive knowledge) take a look at it. You can see the pad thickness without tearing it down.

Almost anybody can do their own brake job. I just drove back from San Antonio last weekend and had the "tattle-tale" talking. Went to Autozone to get pads for front and rear just in case. Whipped out the ole aluminum floor jack and 1/2" breaker bar with 18mm socket for lug nuts. The bolt for the front calipers takes an 18mm socket and 17mm wrench to back up. You will also need a screw type c-clamp to push the pistons in(with one old pad against the pistons in front). The back calipers on mine used a 14mm socket with the 17mm backup wrench. My whole job took me less than 45 minutes total from start to finish. My rotors had no marks and were within specs(called buddy at Midas with dial caliper readings). Do it yourself and save the money. The Midas thing gives you free pads for a lifetime but they will charge you labor($250 +) every time you need them replaced. Went thru that with my old 98 Navigator.

GM is charging that much because list price on the front pads is around $165.00
My wife drives around town and at 23,000 miles my pads are toast and the rotors have a pretty decent lip on them.
Discount price from gmpartshouse.com or equiv is $121 for the pads and 62 for each rotor

I just did the front pads at 53K. The rotors were not able to be turned becase they were below the throw away limit (1.8 inch, and they were 1.74 inch). I had to get the rotors and pads at the dealer, none were available at the local parts stores. Cost $375 just for the parts. Took about 1/2 hour to do.....easiest brake job I've ever done.

Most of the time your local NAPA store carries those parts. In 2000, I let my daughter drive my 99 Sierra for a year. Afterwards, I had a slight vibration in the front at speeds over 65mph. I bought front wheel bearing hubs, rotors and brake pads. I found out afterwards that the front rotors usually warp when water hits them. Point is, all of my local parts stores said that those parts were "dealer only" when they were sitting on the shelf at NAPA.

seeing that the story is about brakes for a SS, how about what type of aftermarket pads are the best for a SS, i find that the stock pads release alot/ way too much brake dust, but do stop well. is there something better out there and sorry if this is a :hijacked
