In my owners manual it says: Your vehicle may be equipped with this option. Looked all over the engine compartment. Can't see anything in reference to it. Is there a way to tell from the VIN or some other information attached to the vehicle? Should there be an indicator light on the instrument cluster similar to when the Stabilitrak kicks in (you know, the little swerving TrailVoy)? Reason I ask is I'm averaging about 12 MPG. Seems to me if it had DOD I would be getting a LITTLE better than that. Any info would be greatly appreciated. THANX
P.S. I drive an equal amount of short trips around town and long trips (100+ miles). Still haven't seen any better than 14 MPG.

I believe, if u have an 06 and the V8, you are packin' DOD.

All our 2006 5.3 V8s have DOD. I have it on mine and note it appears to have a limited range. It helps from about 40 to 74 mph steady state driving. From what I've read, any gas pedal movement will cause it to cut off. Also more than 74mph. This last one really appears true on mine. If I maintain 55-65mph I can see as high as 24+mpg on the DIC (did as a test). Moving along at normal highway 80-90 and I'm lucky to break 18. Normally around town I get 15-16.5 depending on weather mostly (remote start is wonderful in the winter, but it does hit the mpg!). Wish I could find a 'map' of when it cuts in/out, but have not been successful so far. Mine does not have a light on the dash to indicate its working.

You have the DoD on your vehicle. All vehicles equipped with the 5.3 V-8 after 04 have it. 04's have a V-8 WITHOUT the DoD .
You also don't have AWD...you have 4x4. Meaning that you shift it into 4wd unless you have it in A4wd and then it engages only when it senses wheel slip.
You can try to get better mileage by doing one of two things:
1) purchase a DASHHAWK....This little device allows you to tell when the vehicle is in DoD and many other options. I can go into more detail with you if you want.
2) You can keep out of the throttle a little bit. Unfortunately, GM found it not necessary to put it in the DIC (Driver Information Center) that the car is in DoD mode (many other GM vehicles tell you they are in DoD). You can actually feel when DoD is kicking in.
I only found that I was able to tell by the exhaust note and that's it.
I can tell you more about it if you wish. I'm pm you my number if you want.

Thanks for the information guys. It was helpful. Also did some reading on other posts. Guess I'm not alone in the MPG category. But, then again, I didn't buy a V-8 equipped SUV because I wanted to save some gas money. And I will change my information regarding 4wd/Awd. (thanks blue)

How many miles on your TB? I'm just under 16k on mine and my mileage is all over the map.
BTW, it's good to see another Midwest member! I used to live in KC as well. I had a friend in college that lived in Grandview and I would take the "Jumping road" (west main St) when I would drive from my apartment to his place. lol I lived over south of DeVry.

Just a little clarification on the above statement. The '05 Envoy Denali (SWB) and '05 Buick Rainier with the 5.3L V8 do not have DOD activated. The LWB Envoy Denali and Trailblazer EXT do have the DOD activated.

20k on the odo. Ah, yes, "Suicide Hill". I've jumped it many times in the past. Busted a shock mount on the old '85 K-5 Blazer I used to have the last time I did it. But that's been a few years ago. Wouldn't dare do it in the TB.

Bill is correct on the 05's. The engine (LH6) in the 05 SWB models has DOD, but there is no wiring harness to the DOD connector at the rear of the valley cover. GM changed the muffler in 06 SWB models to re-direct exhaust gasses while in the 4-cyl mode.

I used to get a good thrill with my Mark VII. My friend had a 80's RX-7 and we got air a few times.
I wouldn't do it with my TB either!!

im surprissed theres no DoD indicator on the dash...
on our 07 Impala.... with the 3.9 V6, the DoD (now called AFM or something like that), the transition from 6 to 3 cylinders is SEAMLESS....... the only reason we know- is if we have the dash set to show 3 or 6 cyl operation.
Trying to determine by the exhause sound is actually pretty hard... most of the time im wrong...
If im in 3 cyl, and step on the gas, the transition is seamless.
Also, I drive easliy enough that in residential streets I even go into 3 cyl mode.
If in 3 cyl mode, I start slowing down, at 20 MPH, it reverts back to 6.
pretty nice system on the Impala.

It's seamless on the 5.3 TB too as long as it's 100% stock.

So from this statement can I take it that ALL 2006 and newer V8-equipped Envoys/Rainiers/Trailblazers have AFM?

Only the 5.3 V8s, not the 6.0.
