Yep, offer them invoice minus rebates. If you have a trade, that's another story...

never mention you have a trade in .. even if they ask you right off the bat, never mention it. does not matter the reason they give you for asking .. simply say "What difference does it matter to the price of what I am looking at: Then when the deal is done .. mention a trade in ..

Get the best possible price, then say, and now let's talk about my trade.

Month end is a good time to go.
Look for really young sales people or really old sales people. More or less sales people that don't have a family to care for yet or are just working this as a "extra money" job. They are more likely to take a hit on their sales and more likely to spend more "wasted time" on negotiations.
Find a friend that gets supplier discount. Any person that can get supplier discount can give you a printout of the invoice price for any car they have supplier discount for. Yes I have this for Ford and GM, no I won't share, sorry.
If you order a car. You don't have to buy it at the place you order it from. I ordered my last new car from one dealer. I told them I wasn't ready to buy but made it convincing what I wanted and said you get this I might be ready. Then when they got in what I wanted and wouldn't give me the price I wanted I walked. Waited a couple weeks went to another dealer told them what I wanted they did a dealer search found the one I just had ordered, traded for it and then I got the price I wanted.

Check kbb.com for a comparable invoice price. Use that and then subtract the rebate, if you're not taking their finance offer.
1. Never ever agree to buy the same day you negotiate. Dealers are more willing to deal when they know you are willing to walk away.
2. Do your research, find a site like edmunds that lists what everyone is paying for the vehicle and know what every option costs. This way you know what you should be paying for the vehicle. Also check out chevy.com and see what special offers or rebates apply. Remember that rebates are applied to the msrp, so if there are 3k in rebates on the vehicle and the dealership tells you they took 3k off of msrp they are really getting full price for the vehicle.
3. Do not pay for extras. Do not buy the rubberized undercoat, teflon wax job, etc. These are just ADP(Additional Dealer Profit) items. The dealership adds them at nearly 0 cost and charges you an arm and a leg.
4. Dealer Fees are negotiable. You really shouldnt pay over $100 for doc fees, and remember delivery and setup fees are included in the msrp. Some dealers will try and charge you twice for setup fees!
5. Get financing before you go to the dealership. Dealerships will often "up-sell" a loan by adding interest. For instance you may qualify for 4.5% interest but the dealer tells you that you only qualify for 5.5%. Well, the dealer just made a profit off that 1%.
6. Take someone who doesnt have a stake in the car with you. When you are looking at new shiny cars it is easy to get wrapped up in the moment and make a bad decision. If you have someone with you that has a cool head they can help talk you out of making a bad decision.
These are the guidelines I use when buying a new car. I picked up most of them from my brother who sold cars for quite a while. I always negotiate on one day, go home with the paperwork and do my research and sleep on it. If I still feel like it is a good deal the next day then it probably is.
Be careful about dealerships that try and tell you that the deal is only good for that day. If they try and pull that bs on you then take the price to another dealership and I'm sure they will honor it.
Good luck.

It looks like 4500 off of msrp is about the best you can do. That is 3k rebates and 1.5k dealer discount. Good luck.
I got a membership (~$60) with the Canadian Automotive Protection Association (www.apa.ca (http://www.apa.ca)) so that I could get free access to invoice prices for the TBSS. Pretty sure there's a US equivalent you can use.
The APA didn't really save me any money on the truck, as I probably would have beat the sales people down to the same price anyway, it DID save me 2 months of fighting with sales turkeys though... Which is a steal @ $60... lol
All told I ended up with ~$9500 cdn in discounts, although that was in '06 before they lowered the prices here, no idea what I'd get now.
