View Full Version : Did I mess up my 4x4?

Well, I'm a dope :(

The TB was in the garage, and I was going to install my new side mirrors. I got interrupted and needed to go out, so I put everything back together (was not too far into it at the point).

Anyway, apparently I bumped the switch or something and it was in 4H without me realizing it.

I went to back out of the garage wn back into the little turn around area we have. When I turned, the truck stalled. I was like ???

So I start the truck again, pull forward and it seems fine. I back up again, and the engine bogs down, something made a "thump" and stalls again. I'm really mad now, and then I realize it's in 4H :duh::bonk::duh::bonk:

So I out it back into 2WD and now it seems to shake a little when driving. Could this small incident have messed up the drivetrain? Would it now need to be re-alligned? I put it in 4H again and it went in and out of 4x4 fine and seemed okay, but now I'm paranoid

I had 4x4 on a pickup years ago, and it was never a problem (had an actual 4WD shifter in it).

Just hoping I didn't relly mess something up :(

Thanks!
Chris

Donno what you exactly did bud, but as long as you drove in low speeds "under 25mph " and didn't step on it, you should be fine :undecided
4H should never be used unless your stuck :nono:;)
btw, you didnt get any thing in your mail tell now !

You can drive in 4 wheel hi,you don't want to drive around in 4 wheel low.To get your truck in 4 wheel low,you have to put the truck in neutral, foot on the brake then switch to 4 wheel low.You can switch to 4 wheel hi on the fly at any speed.
But GM's have a problem with transfer case getting binded up while making turns and a bigger problem while backing up and turning, such as backing into your drive way from the street. But this only happens while using 4 wheel/AWD drive. There is NO know fix for this problem.

Oops sorry Chris my mistake :bonk:
4Lo is what i meant :duh: 4Hi is nothing, it'll only engage when front wheels slip

All 4wd vehicles with a true 4wd system will cause bind. It isn't a GM thing, it is a law of circumfrance thing. The fronts turn wider than the rear meaning they have to cover more distance than the rear causing pressure to be put on the drivetrain. Something has to slip, typically is a tire in the mud or snow, but if on payment it will be an axle or u-joint. Heck the drivetrain windup can get so bad on my tractor that I have to lift the front end up with the loader - and it is a New Holland.

This is wrong. 4HI does bind the axles together. You will get drivetrain windup in this mode. The Autotrac only engages when it determines there is slippage from the rear wheels.

Spong, dont worry about it man. Ive gotten that a couple times in my 02 after mistakenly using 4HI on dry pavement (my switch has a mind of its own sometimes), goes back to nice and smooth after a day or so. BTW, 4HI is good to 55mph (Ive gone 65 once before and then switched it off immediately, forgot it was on because I didnt slip), 4LO to 20.

:rotfl: It wasn't me it was SilverUnicorn (you know, the guy that take pics of his TB naked and reflects in the chrome) :rotfl: :dielaugh::dielaugh:

Seriously though, is your Tb still under warranty Chris? Take it in and let the dealer worry about it!

I don't think you have anything to worry about
The added load on the engine with the vehicle in reverse and the wheel turned, combined with a possible dirty throttle body, will almost definitely cause the engine to stall.
Even if the TB is clean, you will notice a drop in power and the truck will want to stay put without an excessive amount of throttle...when 4WD is engaged and you go full turn on dry pavement :undecided

A little wheel hop on a cold start, low speed, reverse turn, stall, no biggy, I sure wouldn't waste time at the dealer especially if is okay now
