Well, the cheap way is cut the muffler out and replace with a piece of straight pipe. Noise on the cheap.

I brought my voy to the local muff shop, i had them replace the stock muff with a 70 series flowmaster(single in single out) then ran a tail pipe back inplace of the resonater with a cool chrome tip...It's definetly louder than stock and the in cab drone is not bad at all, everything totalled under 200.I wanted to go dual exhaust but the g/f didnt want to scare the baby:(

Well I realize this is now a bit of an older thread... but if you want to know what a Envoy XL with a straight piped 5.3 V8 sounds like... you're in luck. It just so happens mine is straight piped and it actually sounds really good. I haven't been pulled over for it, but i do live in a college town, so they may not be as strict about that type of stuff here.
Check out the videos below, I took them before and after installing my cold air intake. (since then i've added a tip, so it looks just as good as it sounds)

I installed the SS exhaust on my TB 5.3 and love it. Sounds better than stock, no drone and performs great.
Don
P.S. The DoD muffler kills performance!!!!

With the SS exhaust on your '07 w/ D.O.D does it sound any different when it goes into 4 cylinder mode? How long have you had your exhaust on it & is there any other mods?

Pretty sure there are 3 exhaust systems, one for each engine so the 5.3 doesnt have the 4.2 exhaust...

Viper,
Your straight pipe system to me sounds kinda like a corsa. How is it at highway speeds?

I've never had a problem with the exhaust being too loud... in fact, sometimes I wish it was louder. In any case, there's really not a drone, at highway speeds you can hear it, but it's still very easy to have a conversation with the people in the 2nd and 3rd rows at a normal volume. Without a muffler in the equation, it tends to be pretty raspy if the engine hasn't had time to warm up, but after you're up to temp it sounds great.
I live in a college town right now, so i've never been harassed for the noise, but i'm moving to the suburbs this summer after graduation, and I'm thinking I may have to put some sort of muffler back on it. I've been pulled over twice since doing the exhaust, and both times the officers mentioned the exhaust was loud, but didn't write me a ticket or warning for it.
Good Luck

The exhaust sounds great. Under the DoD function, it does sound different. Not bad, just different. The performance is much different.
I also have the cold air intake (K+N) on mine and love the sound and go of both.
I highly recommend the SS one if you can get it.
Many SS guys cut it off and throw it out. This is how I got mine !!!!
It's been over 6 months and still sounds great!!!
