I've searched and found a couple of hits, but still haven't found a straight forward answer. Is the oil filter that big of a PITA to get out? My wife has the truck at work now so I can't look, but it's in need of an oil change ASAP. I saw the post in the resource section for the I6 engine, but nothing for the 5.3. Is there a cover on the bottom that you need to take off like the I6 engine? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My '04 Rainier equipped with the 5.3 V8 does have a small access cover over the oil filter. It's about 6" x 6" and two or three small bolts hold it in place. Not a big deal to remove and replace the cover; takes about two minutes.

Is the oil filter a pain to get out without making a mess. That as my main concern......
Thanks for the reply though!!

Nope. After you remove the access cover, the oil filter on the 5.3-liter V8 is among the easiest I've seen to remove and replace. Piece of cake.

Nope. Correct filter for my '04 Rainier with 5.3-liter V8 is AC-Delco PF46.
