Anytime I put 87 or 89 in, i sometimes get a knock and ping sound when coming out of 2nd gear. When i use 93, no problems or sounds at all. I'm thinking of having the dealer take a look at it. In the owners manual it says to use 87 octane gas. I wonder is that is just a selling point "yada yada yada." Only have 4,000 miles on my 04 TB.

Using 87 octane here. No problems on Envoy with 16K miles.

I use 87 in Utah (elveation 4300 feet) with no problems. I did notice that on our trip back east that it sounded like the engine was pinging. I put 89 in it and it ran great.

I forgot to mention that I have the V-8 though. Probably similiar to the 6 though.

I run 89 for no reason other then habit. No problems so far with around 9000 on my TB.

I changed the brand of gas, and went back to 87 from 93, and no more knock and ping sounds.

I use 87 now, since our gas just jumped to $0.929/litre or $3.50/gallon.. ($70 a fill.. :(

I use 87 but I only have 225 miles on my 2K5 TB. I only fill up the tank once so far and no knocks but I notice there is a ping after the engine is turned off. any thoughts on the ping??

My bet is that's just the cats cooling -- that's not uncommon.

Man, that just totally sucks. Do you have a lot of tax on the gas to get it to that price?

I'm not from Canada but gas was about $.50 a gallon more than the states when I was in BC and AB about 2 years ago. They do pay high taxes. Different health care system.

We are planning on making another trip up to Edmonton and the Canadian Rockies this summer. I took the Trailblazer for a crosscountry spin last year so I think I'll take the CTS V this time. It has a lot less room, but NAV system and around 110 more HP. About 5 mpg better on gas also.

Does anyone know if XM radio works in Canada?

It does as far up as Toronto, from what I've heard. It's just not guaranteed nor is it marketed there AFAIK.

Well, geographically speaking, that doesn't mean much. Toronto isn't really that far North at all. Its actually further South than Minneapolis if you look on a map.

Anyway, to answer your question Dave, yes XM does work in Canada. But the further North you go the more clearance your vehicle needs to the South to get satellite reception. It works fine in Winnipeg as well as Vancouver, but say you are driving on the a East/West highway up there, if you are on the North side of the semi-trailer truck, the signal will fade out until you pass the truck.

Thanks for the info about the XM reception in Canada. Edmonton is pretty far north, but the land is relatively flat to the south on the way up there. I guess I'll load up the CDs if the reception does get bad.

We use 87 octane most of the time, sometimes we use 85 octane it just depends which is cheaper. To be honest I notice no difference in performance or gas mileage.

85?! Never heard of this....

It is used in higher altitudes. It is common in Utah. Personally, I still use 87.

You won't find anything above 91 here.

Interesting. No Sunoco 94 for the CTS-V, eh? :)

Dang. I wish we had a Sunoco around here. The best I can find is 93 at Holiday and Amoco for my car.

The CTS V has plenty of power just with 87, although I have 91.

I think they limit the octane around here due to the higher elevation with less dense air. The air is usually dry and cool though.

Yeah -- dry, cool air = awesome combustion properties. The lack of density would account for some power loss though.... engines would tend to run rich.

just use the lowest to prevent knocking, 87 seems to work good but my car has only had on tank so far..

Hey I'm from Edmonton. I can't confirm if XM works up here but it should as far as I know. I think since they don't offer it as a service here yet that is why they do not say it will work 100%.

Hey if you go to the rockies check out horse shoe lake about 10 minutes out from Jasper. great for cliff jumping. 10-100 feet cliffs. it's a blast. And maligne canyon.

sorry off topic.

Thanks for the advice. I really enjoyed your part of the world last time I was up there. How much is gas up there these days anyway? Liters/CDN is ok.

Sorry for the off topic guys, sort of since I did mention gas.

Dave, just go to this site: www.gasbuddy.com

Just point and click. Lots of great info, including a cool comparison chart program that lets you compare prices on par.

Friday was $0.859 for 87 octane in Edmonton, we take it out of the ground, give it away to the US and we have to pay that much for ourselves.

I never use to watch gas prices until this week. When it hits 0.79/litre from 0.85/litre I fill up with 94. I figure that its about $10.00/tank more or 0.10/litre but the long and short term results from what I read and heard are worth it. The bottom line I would have paid pretty close to the same for 87 if I did not watch the gas prices. Where I live I have two gas stations at the corner and for the past two weeks the prices fall 0.06/ litre after 7:00pm. Then its high octane time.

What do you have done to the engine that needs high octane..

That's a good question. As many members here have pointed out in the past, the higher octane gas actually hurts the fuel economy since it can't burn as efficiently in our trucks. It promotes carbon deposit buildup.
