GM Cuts Sticker Prices to Provide Even More Value

Consumers Benefit Through Simplified, More Competitive Pricing


DETROIT – GM today announced that it has significantly lowered Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices (MSRPs) on vehicles accounting for about 80 percent of its sales volume. This move covers every Chevrolet, Buick and GMC model, as well as most Pontiac cars and trucks. The new MSRPs are effective Jan. 11. This is the next step in GM’s initiative to simplify pricing and offer consumers the best value in the industry.

Combining this price repositioning with adjustments made to MSRPs at the beginning of the 2006 model year, GM has lowered MSRPs on vehicles representing about 90 percent of its volume.

“This is a big step for us and arguably the biggest price repositioning in our history,” said Mark LaNeve, GM vice president, North America Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. “This move is in line with our customers’ desire for simple, compelling prices.”

Under the new pricing structure, MSRPs on many GM vehicles have been lowered, some by as much as $2,500.

LaNeve explained that GM’s aggressive pricing action taken at the beginning of the 2006 model year was effective in the improving sales performance of the new launch products. This action allowed for clearer comparisons to competitive vehicles and pricing simplicity. It also enabled the nearly two-thirds of new vehicle buyers using the internet to research their vehicle purchase and get strong MSRP comparisons. Evidence of the consumer appeal of this approach became apparent when new products like the Chevrolet Impala and HHR, Pontiac Solstice and Cadillac DTS – introduced with very compelling prices - experienced strong sales following their launch.

“Starting right now, we are going to communicate a clear, simple message,” LaNeve added. “In more segments, with more brands, GM has a great product at a great price, and in many cases, we have the best product at the best price. Customers can compare for themselves not only on our own websites, but on Head2Head at Edmunds.com.”

Pricing for much of the Cadillac lineup already is well-positioned. With today’s announcement, CTS and SRX MSRPs also were repositioned. 2007 Escalade pricing will be announced next week.

Among Saturn models, only Relay was repositioned. Saab and HUMMER also are not included in today’s announcement. Vehicles for these brands are competitively priced.

“As we head into 2006, we’re launching 19 new products that represent over 1.5 million vehicle sales,” LaNeve said. “Today’s action allows us to talk more about the features and benefits of all of our vehicles and to spend less time talking about ‘the deal.’”


Keeping in mind that the Trailblazer/Envoy rebate just got reduced from $3000 to $2000, I would guess that the MSRP on them is probably being reduced by roughly $1000. The whole point for GM appears to be to get MSRPs closer to actual transaction prices. This doesn't mean you'll necessarily get a better price when you go to buy a GM vehicle, there just won't be as many rebates and you may not have to do as much negotiating... :m2:

Also, the '07 Tahoe prices were announced. The base model comes in $2,000 under the base '06 model.

LS- $33,990
LT- $35,740
LTZ- $44,015

According to Edmunds, it looks like the base price of Trailblazer LS 2WD is $24,280 plus $710 for destination. If you add the 1SB LS Preferred Equipment Package and the SS Package, you're up to $31,180. Is this the new MSRP of the base TB SS LS??? :undecided

In the meantime, the Trailblazer rebate has dropped to $1,000. It was $2,000 for the first 10 days of this month and it was $3,000 back in December.

If $31,180 is the new base price of a TB SS LS, that's $2,420 less than the old base price of $33,600.

So, the MSRP is $2,420 less and the rebate is $2,000 less which means the real savings is about $420... Can anyone else confirm??? :grouphug:

So all this is realy doing is simplifying the haggling. I think it is a good idea, Some people might actually be convinced to come in if they hear of lower MSRPs and be tricked into buying what they think is a cheaper price. Good marketing stradigy I suppose. Will it last, doubtful. Works for Saturn with no haggling pricing, why not all GM brands.

The only way for no haggling is for all GM dealers to not do it. Once one does, it is a domino effect, others have to haggle to get customers in showroom or they will loose the sale. I think that is why the GMS for all was so successful in selling vehicles. One price for all.

I think it's great that one of the big 3 is finally trying its hardest to eliminate haggling. I worked as a salesman for a dealer for a year, and personally, its INSANE how many people come in and only care about a vehicle cause of the price. Don't get me wrong, price is important, but at least find something you like and feels right for your driving habits. Finally most people are going to be shopping for vehicles due to the features, and the quality. Maybe Toyota won't be #1 after all.... :thumbsup:

but... the invoice pricing is only down about $1729.
If you bought your TB at $500 over invoice in December, plus $3000 rebate, and your buddy buys one at $500 over invoice today, plus the $1000 rebate, you got the better deal by $271, plus you got your TB a month earlier :thumbsup:

They are probably doing it to keep up with Toyota, I thought I heard that Toyo is neck and neck w/ GM if not in front of them.

Cutting MSRP also allows them to say they are less expensive then the compition for equally equipped ride or as all the commercials say "Starting at $##,###"

probably not too much since gms is just x percent off of invoice, and as stated earlier invoice pricing barely dropped. probably $50 difference at most

"The automaker is offering its dealers $250 "instant value certificates" that can be used as closing tools in the sale of GMC and Chevrolet SUVs and pickups, according to a letter sent to GM dealers Wednesday that was obtained by The Detroit News.

Each dealer will be given a specific number of certificates based on sales volume and other criteria and can offer customers up to four certificates -- or $1,000 in rebates -- to close a sale.

In the case of the $250 dealer certificates, he said the program -- which runs until Feb. 28 -- is designed to help clear out aging truck models before the arrival of 2007 replacements this year, which will be priced lower than their predecessors."

sounds correct.dealers in some markets and on most products have up to 1000 dollars in 250 dollars amounts that could reduce the price about 500 additional.tb prices are probably down at max about 750 even with dealer certificates from gm.lower prices may hurt the typical buyer who is upside down on his existing vehicle.probably will help leasing a little as you may get a lower lease payment now.
