Well, the dealer says that after 4 inspections, of the front end, they have concluded that the knocking noise that happens while going over bumps, is coming from the front left strut, internaly. They say they have to order part. Are these the Bilstien's? What should I know, is there a chance they might replace it with something cheaper? They say it will take about 1 wk or less.

Depending on your mileage, I would think they should replace both struts as a pair. I would suggest it to the SM.

My 2004 4X4 Envoy has a line on the window sticker that it came with HD Bilsteins. That makes me think there are even cheaper OEM shocks put on some vehicles. And the factory Bilsteins are only 3/4 the diameter of the yellow/blue aftermarket gas-pressurized Bilsteins you can upgrade to.

IMH,
Make them replace both at the same time, I would make sure I have a match set.

The TB has 5800 miles on the ODO. What possible reasanoble argument can I make, for them to replace both? Please let me know as soon as possible. Thanks.

I thought the 4 x 4's came with Bilsteins? (Ours did and I don't remember it being an option).

The reason I mention to replace both is they may have come from the same mfg lot number and you could possibly have a quality issue of the units if they were manufactured at the same time. I would hat for you to get the new one on and the other one did the same thing a month or so later. It would be the same if you had one set of brake pads half worn and the other one new. Just my :m2: . Also if the other one has been on the vehicle for over 5K you may look a bit droopy on one side of your front end, with one being full strength and the other one showing wear.

He says they will not replace both. Claims theres no need to; said that if we were using the mileage theory, then it would still be to young, and new at 5800 miles. He also claimed that if both struts on the vehicle were removed, that the truck would still be sitting at the same level, he said that the struts do not control height level on TB's (no druping on any side). He said that the only difference I would feel would be that the noise was gone......
Look, I don't trust any dealer, or any rep for that matter. But this guy to me seems like a genuine guy. I would hope that he is not blowin smoke up my arssss:x

As a warranty issue, he might have a point that only the failed item gets replaced under policy. You might want the other one to go away, but it's not dead yet.
I removed two perfectly good shocks while they were still in warranty to put in the gas pressurized Bilsteins, but then I'm a nut.
But the service advisor is wrong about ride height. The shock in the strut *is* the determination of ride height. The lower arm of the strut bolts to the shock. If the shock were longer, it would be its own lift kit. If the strut was removed, there would be no coil spring and the suspension would collapse. He might be thinking about other vehicles with torsion bar suspensions.
If you had the aftermarket gas pressurized shocks, then the internal pressure of the shocks could affect ride height in a tiny way, but for OEM shocks, the coil spring and the length of the shock determine height.

Today, the part # is 15195074, is this the Bilstien shock/strut?
