I purchased the regular K&N E-1009 for my '02 4.2. I went to put it in and was to long for the stock air box. I have read several threads here, but I am still not sure what I need to do. Cut the air box? Gut the airbox? Remove the airbox? Adding the K&N is really the only mod I am looking at doing right now. I would appreciate any advise on how to do this the correct way.

I ran the same filter on my 2004 before switching to the K&N CAI. Filter slid on without problem or any mods. My recommendation would be to return it and go with the CAI. Some kid in one of those new Mustangs tried to mess with me on the interstate today and I blew his doors off. Lot of fun to pick up that much performance in a truck.

My TB is a 2002 LT. I do not want to much extra noise b/c my wife drives it sometimes. Do not get me wrong though, I know that I would see more gain from a CIA but I do not want to add to much noise. The filter seems to be about an inch or so longer than the stock filter and will not fit in the stock airbox?

Is the 1009-E supposed to just drop in where the stock filter is? It seems that the plastic white mold that the stock filter sat in is too short for the K&N.

Mine went right in to my 02 TB and my 06 TBSS. no problems at all.

I think the noise issue with the CAI is overblown. You'll only hear it during a fairly hard accel, or when pulling a hill on the freeway. Regular city or freeway driving really doesn't result in much noise. It reminds me of the days we used to flip the air filter housing lids upside down on carburated cars.

lay the k&n on top of the stock filter for size comparison. if the k&n is larger then it is the wrong one. there is no other way to install a k&n , they are a direct replacement "drop in " filter. return it if it doesnt fit and open the box on the new one while holding your stock one next to it before you purchase it. good luck.

Yep, if you simply went with the filter replacement it should just drop in. Either you picked up the wrong one or it was the wrong one in the box.

I went back to the place I bought this and it was the worng filter. We looked through the other filters they had and found the right one in a different box. Look like they were switch. I got confused when I started reading about people cutting up the stock air box. Hey - Does that really help? Thanks for all of the replys. I try to post some pics og my TB in the future. Nice site.

I have the E-1009 in my 02 TB, fits perfectly and I have gutted my airbox. I havent noticed too much of a performance increase, but also have not fabbed up something to seal the sides and top from the engine bay.

Seems to be a wide variety of results for this filter. I have gotten about 2 more miles to the gallon since I installed it. I can't say that I ever noticed any other changes, but hell....2 more miles to the gallon is worth it to me.

ghoster, that is about what I have got out of it too, especially when I drive milder than usual on trips and use CC. With only the drop-in and TBS, I get about 21.5mpg with a pretty unloaded TB on the hwy over a tank. Can get from my house in Seattle to Coeur 'd Alene, ID on 1 tank with one stop for food! Before that, always had to stop and fillup, but now that I can do it in 1tank, I want the 22gal in my 02.

I love the tank size on my 04. I do a 1000 mile round trip once a month to see my parents. Its nice not to stop often. If I set the cruise at 70, I can get 24 mile to the gallon. Thats from here at sea level in Virginia. My parents are in the mountains in western North Carolina, so my mileage gets worse once I get closer to them. I pulled a small U-haul trailer to their house, and on the flat parts I still got a little over 19 Miles to the gallon. The K&N was a great improvement when towing. The first little trailer I pulled (without the K&N) I got 15 miles to the gallon. So that was quite an improvment.

I am averaging 16.4mpg just back and forth 8 miles each way from work and some highway driving on weekends according to the computer. I will hopefully see an imporvement and post it here later. For now I am going to leave the stock airbox alone. But one of these days when I am bored I'd say I'll cut it up a little. Why not.
