Quick question, I just purchased an Envoy overhead console with the sunglasses holder and homelink off of eBay. It includes the brackets, but does my TB have the studs under the headliner to bolt it to, or does it just connect to the headliner? Thanks.

The Envoy, TB, Bravada, Rainer, etc. all have the same mounting configuration to the vehicle (I work at the company that makes the OEM overhead consoles). Assuming that the Envoy console that you bought is OEM, it should mount directly in place of your TB console.

Unfortunately, I do not have a factory console over head, so I will have to drop the liner, unless I get lucky and only have to cut small sections of it. It is a factory Envoy console.

It should still have the slots for the mounting clips and the screw holes already there though; you'll just have to cut out the apropriate area from the headliner. According to the GM manual, the biggest concern I would have is if the wiring harness to enable the homelink and voice recorder are present.

Awesome, great news for me. I will post some pics when it is straight.

I have an Acura with Homelink and it is great. The Homelink technology has been developed by Johnson Controls. They are a major player in the automation and controls field. My next car will definetly have it.

Good luck on the install.

Not to jump ahead, but what is involved with hooking homelink up. I wanted it for my garage doors only.

Its fairly simple to program. It depends on your garage door opener. Usually involves pushing a button on the opener and then pushing the Homelink button you want to assign to the door within 15-30 seconds.

Ok, so is it battery operated, or hardwired? I should have ti in a few days, just trying to get ready for it. I will be installing my XM unit that day also.

It's hardwired. That's what I mentioned in my post; while the physical unit mounts are there, the wiring harness and connector for your power and such may not be. You may have a problem with that aspect of the install.

OK, I thought you where refering to the voice recorder, not the homelink. I guess I will be looking for a wiring harness now :D

Nope, both are fed power off the same plug according to the factory service manual. ;)

You may want to check that out though before buying extra parts.

What type of XM install are you doing, BTW? Factory-style or an aftermarket unit?

I purchased the SkyFi2. I am coming from the XM Commander, which was great, just hard installed it into my last Silverado and left it in, plus I hated the small display.

Sounds good. What antenna are you using and how are you going to mount it? Just curious to see what other people are going with. I love my SkyFi 2 with the 'thru glass' antenna. Pictures are here:

Good luck with yours!

I am going to use the low profile magnetic one, I think Terk makes it, it comes with the kit. I am going to run it out the front door under the gaskets and right above the windshield. I will see how it turns out. I ran the one on my Silverado out of the 3rd brake light, which was easy and clean, but not an option now

Charlie, or anyone else out there with XM/aftermarket unit, I received my SkyFi2 unit, and I could not find anyplace I wanted to mount it. I have decided to go with an aftermarket headunit. I noticed on Crutchfield's website it says I will need some $70 adapter to use an aftermarket unit due to the door chimes. If I do not want to buy this adapter, will my unit still function 100% properly aside from the chimes?

The unit will work fine, yes. You will just lose the door chimes and onstar. Might I ask why you didn't find anyplace to mount it? That xmfan.com site has a few pictures of installations in TBs that looked great to me.

I guess it really just depends what you're looking to do with it. :m2:

Good question. It is mainly because of the cradle. If I did not need the cradle with the unit, I would use it. I just could not find any place I felt to be easy access without the loss of room for things like drinks. I just ordered a Sony Sony CDX-F7715X CD/MP3 Receiver from Crutchfield. Where I spent more money than I expected was on the darn adapters. I needed the XM tuner ($49) and then the Sony adpater for the XM tuner ($49) So much for just a headunit any more.

I am going to install the Delphi unit in house I suppose.

LOL yeah that's the problem with aftermarket stuff; seems like audio systems are tied into WAY too many things anymore to be a simple swap.

As for losing room for drinks, welcome to my world. The Envoy has one less cup holder in the console than the TB does. I seriously, seriously hate that. I need all the cupholders I can get sometimes!

I would really recommend checking xmfan.com, there are TONS of options they have discussed in the past.

Just wanted to let you know that the GM XM Direct kit is now available. You won't lose door chimes or steering wheel controls. It installs just like factory XM. The only catch is that you must have a factory XM ready radio. If the songs titles and artist come up on the factory radio, it is a good chance that its XM ready.

Check out the GM XM Direct article from Nov 04.

http://articles.tbecentral.com/articles/4/1/XM-Direct-for-GM---It%26%2339%3Bs-HERE%21

That setup will provide a clean, factory like install.

Well hell... I wish I had noticed he had an '03 or I would've mentioned that by now! :o

Again though it depends if he wants the XM able to go into other vehicles, the house, etc. :m2:

Actually, I think that only 04-05's came with standard & optional XM ready radios. Don't know about the 03'. So, I might be incorrect for not seeing that.

Anyway, I did hear that a few people replaced their older Delco NON XM ready radios with XM ready ones and got the dealer to remove/reset the radio theft lock.

Hey, thanks for the help guys. I checked out xmfan, and found some pretty neat ideas. I think overall the new head unit will be a good choice for if I go to an amp and small sub setup later on.

As long as the stock HU says "Band" instead of "AM FM" on it, it's XM ready.

I've heard of that too, but supposedly it only works on the very last few 02s and first few 03 "non band button" trucks, because GM switched to a different version of the Class 2 Data Bus. I wouldn't be able to swap in my truck since it's a very, very early 02. ;)

Just wanted to chime in with my current set up.. I purchased Sirius Radio (JVC KT-SR2000) with the Car/Home kit.. It comes with two seperate cradles so you can swap out the unit itself (About the size of a thick calculator) very easily and connect it to both your home stereo with RCA's, or to your car audio system (Currently using the built in FM Transmitter).. I know you guys were talking about XM, but I persoannly like Sirius a hell of a lot better.. They also have some units out now that supposedly pick up both Sirius and XM, I assume you'd have to subscribe to both services though..

Here's a link to the radio itself:
http://www.sirius.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Sirius/CachedPage&c=ProductAsset&cid=1107450540372
(If you scroll down to the accesories, you'll see the Plug and Play Car Kit..)

The car kit came with that suction cup arm that attaches to the cradle and windshield of the car.. Tried attaching it to various parts of the dash using the suction cup but no luck there, only the windshield.. The whoel unit is rather large when attached to the windshield and there's no good way to hide the cables with the unit kinda floating in the middle of my dash.. So I actually used only the small cradle piece and attached it to where the 4-wheel drive button(s) would be with 3M two sided pads (I only have 2-wheel drive, so the unit actually helps to cover up that ugly decorative emblem above the rear wiper knob..) It's within easy sight and reach, and doesn't look bad at all when I don't have the radio itself in the car..

I then ran all the wiring directly into the dash, the power cord pops out right below the cigarette lighters and the antenna runs through the dash out the driver door striping, inside the stiping above the winshield, and attaches to the roof with a magnet.. The antenna is actually really small compared to some I've seen on both factory installed units and aftermarket radios.. I was afraid it would look silly on the big TB, but it's actually really clean..

I'm at work so I'll have to post pics of the install when I get home..

Just wanted to chime in.. :D

Here are some pics of my lame install.. I attached the radio itself a little crooked, oops!! It's just temprary though, until I can afford a new head unit that either supports Sirius or has an extra input so I can use RCA's to hook up..

Also, be careful washing the car with those magnetic antennas.. They can leave some nasty scratches on the paint underneith..

I have an 04 envoy, did not have factory xm installed. After reading this thread, went to circuit city and got the sir-gm1 sirius unit for gm. After about an hour of installing it( getting the ant. right and running the wire took up most of that time) hit the band switch a couple times and got sr1 and sr2.
Works like a champ, thanks for the info, saved me money!!!!
