just curious on how much it is to plate vehicles in other states. i know, here in nebraska, we're getting ripped of, but i don't know in comparison to other states.
when i bought my tb, i traded my z28 for it, so the cost on the bill of sale was roughly $11,000. it cost me $850 to plate it!! i had bought a dakota for $12,000 two months prior and had i plated in nebraska i would have had to pay $1,200!!!:hissy: it's a good thing i move to new mexico shortly after, where i only paid $55!!!:raspberry:D
anyway, i was just curious how much each state makes a person pay to make their vehicle legal... maybe nebraska isn't the worst.:undecided

In Rhode Island, if you register a T/V as a passenger car, you pay 7% of the sale price in tax (allowance for trade).

15,000 car price
5,000 trade value
10,000 Pay taxes on

As a truck, you pay 7% of the book value (no allowance for a trade)

15,000 car price
5,000 trade value
Pay taxes on $15,000

Last November when I renewed I paid $60 for 2 years (30/ year). In 2009, I will pay $94 (47/year) because our state just changed the fees and now you pay by GVW of the vehicle.

Just went up from $20 a year to $40. Personalized plates went from $40 to $80 a year. State vehicle inspection is still free though.

My TB just turned 2 years old in March. I renewed my plates and they were $470.50. It was over $500 last year and close to $600 the first year (doesn't count the sales tax).

Here in Nebraska they stick it to you dry, no lube!

Are you talking about the tax AND plate (registration) fee?

Speaking of getting ripped off, if I bought your vehicle in NY, it would have cost me $900+ plus $110 for 2 yr. registration (plates).

In PA the Envoy is $36/year, around $25 for the yearly vehicle inspection, depends where you go.

Gotta love Oregon! No sales tax; no "use" tax on vehicles. Custom plates for my SS are $104 for TWO years. I believe standard plates are less than half that for two years; the cost is the same on all cars, not "value-priced". Until a few years ago, they were $10 a year. Year of manufacture plates for collector cars are $45 ONE TIME FEE.

$75 in WI for cars and light trucks. Anything that seats 4 or more can get car plates. $90 for personalized plates. $15 annual for camping/travel trailers over 3000#. Plates for small utility trailers and popup campers under 3000# are voluntary. Mandatory emmisions checks every two years for cars over 5 years old for the 5 county are in SE WI (Milwaukee regeon). So long as you have a 96 or newer and are not throwing any codes, you pass. The rest of WI does not have to have emisions, though for some time they've been throwing around the idea of the entire state having to get emissions tests.

i'm talking plating and registering the vehicle. i've heard some states only do the sales tax on the vehicle when it is bought (i.e. new mexico). nebraska on the other hand will charge sales tax on the vehicle each time, no matter how many times it changes hands. there is currently a debate about the fees to make a vehicle legal because nebraska residents are going to iowa and south dakota to register their vehicle, and its a lot cheaper. the end result, the nebraska government loses out on $14 million a year.

I am in Lincoln, NE and I pay about $390 for my 2002 Envoy. That includes a wheel tax of $40. I am not sure why it would cost you $850 in ashland. Also I know it is calculated based on how old and what the MSRP new is. I think have also heard that it stays high for the first 10 years or so.

:iagree:

$36 for the TB and all my other cars as well (TB is considered a station wagon, and I'm okay with that!)

Inspection (yearly) runs me $21 if nothing is needed + $2 for the sticker (ripoff)
Emissions test (yearly) runs me $49 if everything passes.

If the TB were considered a truck it would be $72 for registration (yearly).

I think maybe you weren't very clear in the OP. No matter. WI is one of those states where we have to pay sales tax everytime the vehicle is sold. I just bought the HHR referenced in my sig. Title fee and registration were something like $140. Thats standard no matter how old the car. Tax is 5% for the state, and whatever county taxes there might be. In my case its an extra 1/2% Stadium tax to help pay for Miller Park (http://www.ballparks.com/baseball/national/miller.htm).

Where I live, the tag fee is $20 (regular plates, custom plates go up from there) plus a tax % on the Valuation of your car. I ended up paying about $170 for a year.

to make everything clear, i was talking about the intitial cost when you first purchased the vehicle. i plated mine for $280 this last year for my annual renewal. i've heard it keeps going down evry year but i've never had a vehicle long enough to find out.
and when i mentioned the vehicl being taxed when it is bought, i meant when the first owner of the vehicle purchases it from the dealership.
