Since I’m new to SUV ownership, I was wondering if any members could enlighten me on maintaining a 4X4 vehicle – particularly any procedures related to the 4-wheel-drive system (i.e. transfer case, front/rear differentials, etc.) like fluid change intervals. My Trailblazer has just over 34K miles. I was thinking it would probably be a good idea to at least replace the rear differential fluid and transmission fluid just before winter as preventative maintenance. By that time the Trailblazer will be almost 4 years old and I predict there will be over 40K miles on it by then.

Heres a link for you (http://forums.trailvoy.com/showthread.php?t=33831), check out rbarrios's link in that thread for pics....we have synthetic gear oil, 40k might be a little early IMO but it def won't hurt....well except your wallet, the gear oil is over $20.00 a bottle from the dealer:eek:

:iagree: I changed mine way too early to the tune of $360. I took it in and had them do everything right after I bought it at about 30,000 miles. Tranny flush through and pan drop revealed little wear and the diffs and transfer case were also good. Wasted a whack of cash and kinda wished I'd followed the instructions in the manual.

at around 50k I had all the drive train fliuds replaced .. Trans, transfer case, front and rear axles .. It was expensive but I did it for my own peace of mind as I too bought used .

Also, once a month I kick in the 4 wheel and drive for about a mile or two then kick it out. I do this regardless of the weather. I work on a campus and arrive early anyway, so I just take my time when driving on company property until i get to the parking garage. Was told this years ago by a service rep at a chevy dealership, always did it with my last truck and it lasted over 240k miles on the orginal trans and so on, so I figured to do it with this my Envoy as well.
