View Full Version : Help with resonator replacement
need advice.. instaled a 50 series. kept orig resonator. looking to dump the resonator (think its a bottleneck). Any suggestion on a replacement. would an xl magnaflow be effective. Or open to suggestions
Thanks

Do you often talk to yourself? :weird:
just a test to see exactly what people post replies to. I ask for resonator help..no posts for a few days. I type intresting and I get one in 20 minutes.

informed responses are harder to come by than smartass remarks (like what I'm doing right now).
Its only been a day. patience my friend

looking to dump the resonator (think its a bottleneck)
From my observation, the "bottleneck" in the exhaust is the "U" bend in the pipe that goes up and over the rear axle. It gets squeezed down to roughly an oval shape. A Cat-back dual system takes care of that. Easier to push exhaust through two pipes than one.

i have a 40 series no resonator. took that off cuz of the sound, sounds like an import. others may say not to take it off cuz of the lack back pressure. but mine sounds puuuurfect:rotfl: . i did it cuz no loot for a Borla catback system. LOL.
thanks for your replies. I am running the westers tune and an airraid tbs. I took the spacer off last night and what a difference. The system felt sluggish and the drone with the 50 was annoying. Wasnt happy with it at all. Once I took the tbs off acceleration is smoother and quicker..and the drone is all but gone except at wot. I was happy with the tbs before the westers. with the westers the tbs serves a higher purpose sitting in a drawer.
Jimmyjam..sorry for my frustration..sometimes when you're looking for answers patience goes out the window.

The reasonator is just another muffler. There are alot of misconceptions about high flow exhaust systems. Its like you want to have an optimal flow for horsepower at high speeds, but not lose all of your backpressure for low end torque.
The drone is consistant with your vehicles interior resonant frequency ( stereo guys know alot more about this ) .. theres no real way to eliminate it without silencing your exhuast system, different exhaust systems may resonate at different RPM speeds.
Another misunderstood exhaust component are "high flow cats" .. there really is no such thing, internally, they are the same, but the diameter of the pipe is bigger, therefore, allowing more volume of exhaust gasses to pass through.
Alot of exhaust systems dont flow enough gasses below 2500 RPM to take advantage of a high flow exhaust system, let alone a dual exhaust. So Unless you're always at WOT or building a drag car, you wont see as much gains.
I know my vehicle cruises at 80 mph on the freeway with a little over 2000 rpm .. when you have a free flow exhaust system, it will change your RPM range, so your same vehicle speeds may be obtained at a lower RPM. As long as you dont lose the backpressure on your EGR valve, you will be okay, some new engines rely on EGR backpressure to run properly and are tuned accordingly.
The best, and about the only way to get more power out of any new vehicle is to reprogram the computer which you have already done with the chip. Aside from that, unless you internally modify the engine or use a power adder like nitrous or a supercharger, you wont see as much benefits by opening up the rest of your exhaust .. unless this is something you plan on doing in the future.
