Ive been wanting to change out the trans fluid for a little while now and I have come across a little problem. I dont know what size filter to get. At Autozone they have a shallow pan and a deep pan but I dont know what size pan I have. I have the 4.2 liter thats a 4x4. I dont know how many quarts to buy either.

I believe the smooth bottom pan is the shallow one and the pan with the step is the deep pan. Autozone will tell you the capacity and be sure you use dex 6 for the replacement. The book will ask for dex 3 but 6 will mix ok and is synthetic. Change it again in 3 months or so. You are not changing out the TC fluid and that is why the second change. You also might want to install a drain plug at the same time. Easier to change the fluid next time. PS you might want to post any more questions on the 4.2 forum.
