does the dealer do an oil change on the SS before delivery?? Mine had a tag from the PA dealer (where my dealer located one) that said oil change due at 3000 miles, was it just a reminder, or did they change the oil when they got it???

My first oil change was on the house, and the dealer put in 6.5 quarts. He said 6 put it to the middle of the guage, but 6.5 filled it up.

6.5 quarts is what the dealer told me on my 5.3L also. :undecided Since it was 6.5 quarts, they just rounded the price up to 7.0 quarts (Mobil 1 synthetic.) Next time I'm going to ask for the left over 1/2 quart of oil.:hissy:

I would go with the man. specs of 6-the dipstick could be off- too much oil is much worse than not enough like quantity vs. like quantity. It could splash/submerge the crank, creating alot of unnecessary drag and stress on the rotating assembly, etc.
My tahoe took six, the dealer put in seven and it was just slightly above the dipstick. I drove it a week before noticing, I got 2 less mpg that week. It was the worst dealer service experience I've ever had. They put in seven quarts of 10/30, when the manual/oil cap say 6 quarts of 5/30. And they charged me for seven. I disputed the charge with AMEX, and they gave me a credit.

As soon as they told me the price. I had them double check that the engine wasn't flooded with oil, and that it was at the proper level. I dunno, I'm doing it myself from now on, like I should have the first time.

Is this engine any different from the other engines? My 05SLT takes 6.5 to 7 quarts of oil. I just did and oil change yesterday, and sure enough they put seven quarts. I checked the dip stick right on the line, a okay.

I just changed it and 6.0 quarts put it 1 qt low on the stick. Im thinking 6.5 would do it.
carefull changing the filter, the oil pan has all sorts of sharp casting edges.

Yea mine is currently 1qt low on the stick. Always better low than high. Also YES the filter changing was a pain in the ______ My hands are all torn up. Got mad, took the woman's car to murrays and got those funky looking pliers for oil filters and got it off in a second. Now I know for next time. Also, if you get a K&N filter it has a nub so to speak on the bottom to which you can simply attach a socket or box end wrench to get it on and off quite easily.
No sure where you guys are getting your "better low than high" mantra. If anything, a high-revving motor should be higher on the dipstick crosshatch than lower. At 6500 RPM, you don't want to be starving the LS2 of oil.

Too much oil will actually reduce rpm's and hence power. I don't know if its the same concept, but I have an 05 seadoo RXP that the dealer put just a little too much oil in it and I could tell immediately. My Rpm's went from 8300 to just below 8000 and it felt very sluggish on the top end. I am sure it hurt the top speed as well but once it hits 70 it stops (the speedo) and I have no way of finding out exactly. But this is my :m2:

While it's true that too much oil is bad for performance, it's also very true that too little oil can have create some nasty issues (i.e. bearing failures to start). That's why a lot of auto-x types will run a little more oil in the pan at track events. This will ensure that the risks of running dry are somewhat eliminated.
IMHO the best possible solution for daily driving is to make sure the you always run your oil level at the optimum level (as indicated by your dipstick) and if anything a little more oil will not hurt.
YMMV...

Ok this is weird. When I did my first oil change and posted above, I put in 6.5 qts and it was in the middle of the dipstick. say one notch from the top hole, just over the middle hole.
this time, same filter, same oil and I put in 6.5 qts and checked it, in the same exact position as always, and it appears to be 1/2 qt over, its about one notch OVER the top hole. WTF. I double checked, rechecked and checked again and I put in 6.5 qts. Didnt let it drain any longer or shorter either.

the most accurate (and safest) method I have found is to put in the six quarts when you do the change, crank it up and let it run for a few minutes checking to ensure you have no leaks, then shut it down and wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back down. Check the level at this point and if it's not in the correct range according to the dipstick, add accordingly. You get the most accurate readings when the oil is warm.

In both cases for me I did let the truck run and then drain down. First time I went with 6 and then added the 1/2 qt. THis time I just put in 6.5 because thats what it took last time. guess Im going to go back to putting in 6 and then adding until I get it right.

I just got my oil changed for the first time at 3,470 miles. The first one was on the house, and they charged themselves for 7 quarts.

I had the dealer change the oil when I had the TB serviced for another problem.
I questioned the service adviser about the amount of oil I was charged for it cause it only showed 6 qts of oil installed. (The manual shows my TB using 7 qts). He said they prefill the oil filter with 1/2 qt and then add 6 qts - which brings it to using 6 1/2 qts of oil. The dip stick shows it right on the full mark.
