View Full Version : Clearance Lights Install?

Has anyone installed the 03-04 Clearance lights on their roof racks, like the North Face Edition has? I think I have figured out the way to run my wires, but does anyone know what comes with the LH and RH light units? Do they come with the socket and bulbs, or do have to buy the wiring kits?
Thanks, and I will post some pics when I am done installing.

I added turn signals to my mirrors, and the lenses came with the bulbs and sockets already attached. I would assume that the clearance lights would come the same way, but I can't promise anything. I do know that you need the right lens, left lens, and the wiring harness. I think the total for the parts is just under $160. I have the part numbers for the regular wheelbase TB somewhere if you need them. I need the numbers for the EXT, but I haven't had the money to do that mod yet anyway. Hope this helps...

Yea, I did the turn signal mod a few weeks back and the assemblies came with all of the bulb/socket/light parts needed. I have the part numbers for the regular wheelbase TB which is what my 02 is, and I think I am just going to go ahead and buy the lamp enclosures and see what they come with. I plan on running all of my own wire anyway, I just need the enclosure and socket. I could probably find the bulb somewhere else.
BTW, I dont know for sure if the part #s listed below will work on the EXT, though I havent heard otherwise:
15163401 LH enclosure
15163402 RH enclosure
15163404 wiring harness

Sorry, but do I also need the wiring harness no matter what? Even if I run all of the wires to the lights I must have the harness? Thanks for the insight, I wasnt sure if I needed them at all, but I guess I do.
Thanks for the info, Erik

There is a car on cardomain that had those lights added on the roof rack. I'm pretty sure it was some guy from japan.

yep, this guy had his install on some japanese website that I looked at for some ideas. I want to make my install as clean as possible since I use my roof racks year round for skiing and boarding, so I cant just run the wire down the inside of my racks, the wires need to be hidden.
BTW, I emailed the tech support guy from newchevroletparts.com and he said the assemblies only come with the plastic piece; to get the socket and bulb you have to order them seperately. Oh well, looks like it will be more money to install them now. :(

I saw the new thread on this topic, and started thinking how cool it would be to install these and have them flash with the turn signals. I dont think there is any safety benefit of this, but it would look cool to have the mirrors and the roof both flash with the turn signal. I think I am going to have to find some cash and buy the enclosures. But, does anyone know how to wire up these so they come on with the running lights and with the turn signal? I'm not a wiring person, but I think I would need a relay. I have no idea how to do it, but that's why I have all of you guys! :D

Maybe running a wire over to the turn signals for the outside mirrors? That would be my thought. :m2:

Thanks Charlie! I know I need a running light and turn signal input, so by running the lights off the taillights, I can get both of these signals. I also need to know how to wire up the lights to be on steadily with the running lights and flash with the turn signals. I can follow directions really well, :D but I'm not any good with electrical otherwise. :(

I'm sure you could do it with a few transistors, resistors, and a pair of relays. I'll try to draw up a circuit tonight.

Having said that..

Relays don't make sense in multisim. K is the coil, and the other side is the common-Normally Open connection. If you get a relay from radio shack you'll see what I mean. if you don't know how to read a transistor, on the picture the top is C(ollector), middle is B(ase) and the bottom with the arrow is E(mitter).
So when the Parking light is on and the turn signal is off, the lamps are lit. When the turn signal turns on, the lights turn off. Its got to be inverted like that.. if you think about it you'll realize why.
I'd recommend getting a lantern battery and messing with this first. its a fun science project. Oh yeah btw you'll need one of these circutis for each side.

I picked up a relay at Radioshack today, and I see what you mean jimmyjam, but didnt remember the transistors, resistor, or diode. Thats tomorrows todo. I will be sure to test it before I hook up the lights!
Thanks again,

Either my computer sucks, or that's a bad link. I got to it through the parent directory, but maybe someone could fix it or just tell me that this laptop is a piece of *****...

it's almost a good link. It's missing the pg at the very end. It should read this http://www.swapmeetdave.com/Humor/Insurance/CayenneA.jpg

I am leaving for two and a half weeks starting on Sunday, so I was going to go to the dealership and have them order the enclosures for me so I could get them by Wed. and figure out how to install them before I leave. Long story short, the price gmpartsdirect gave me for the dealership price was about $25 more for each. So, through gmpartsdirect, they are about $50 each plus s&h. The dealership price I had was $77.44 and the dealership wanted something around $96 for each!!!  So, I will order them through gmpartsdirect if I cant find them cheaper at the GMC dealership tomorrow and install them when I get back. :(
Very frusturating...

Or the other way you could run them... is if you do the "mirror parking light mod" and then tap that source... this way they would run off the same circuit. Just don't know if the circuitry will be able to handle the load.
Otherwise... the schematic that jimmyjam worked up should work perfectly.

jimmyjam- What wattage resistors should I buy, 1/4 watt or 1/2 watt, or does it matter? Also, I am looking at radioshack.com for prices, and have noticed on the diagram you drew that there is, for example, a 2 infront of the transistor N2222A. Does that mean there are 2 transistors used there? If so, how are they wired?
Thanks again for helping me with this project! :D

you can get the lower wattage resisitors.. not much current going through those at all (unless something is wrong). also, there are only 2 transistors in each circuit, ignore that 2 in front of the n.

Thanks for the info, I will run to Radioshack in about 15min and test wire everything.
