View Full Version : Crunch or grinding at end of stop

This just started yesterday and it's not all the time. When the truck is cold, or after I've been driving it for a little bit without coming to a stop it doesn't do it. When I come to a stop, from about 10mph to zero it sounds like metal on metal, kind of like brake linings grinding on rotors. I'm pretty sure it's coming from the rear. But I could be wrong. I checked the rotors on all 4 corners and they are fine, no grinding. I can decelerate from 70-20 and it's sounds fine, no grinding or shaking. But at the end of the stop, it just sounds bad. IT kind of seems like suspension to me. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Eric

I have on '02 TB LT and have had the same noise, i brought it to the dealer and they told me it could be the sway bar so i replaced it and it was fine for a while but it recently just started making the noise again, i think it might be something with the suspension and i think the noise is coming from the front but im not sure

Does it do it if you roll slowly to a stop without brakes?

How closely did you check your brakes, have you ever replaced them, how many miles do you have on them. Check the front and rear of each lining, sometimes they wear at an angle. Make sure you check both inner and outer pads. If you are sure that they are fine then perhaps the linings have hardened.

Sparty, I just replaced the brakes on all 4 corners about two weeks ago. The rotors were also turned. I haven't had it up on a hoist yet, but I'm 98% sure it's not the brakes. I'm also sure I torqued eveything down.
tbalzed, I haven't tried to coast to a stop without brakes. But, under light braking i can get it to not do it.
bassmaster, Sway bar eh? Did they replace the Endlinks? or the whole thing? or both? Could you give me a little more information?
I'm pretty sure it's suspension related. Not brakes. Any ideas?

Then that eliminates a failed U-joint. Have had that happen on other vehicles... a squeaking or rubbing noise as I comt to a stop, independent of brakes.
Don't see how the sway bar itself could make any noise at all. The bushings or the end links yes, sway bar? don't think so, unless they replace the whole bar-links-bushings as an assembly.
