View Full Version : Aftermarket transmission pan for the 4L70E
2006 Blue TB SS

We all know that extreme temperatures will kill an automatic. So, since I've been considering upgrading the torque converter, I've been looking at also increasing the cooling capacity of the existing system. The two things that I'm looking at would be adding an external cooler and a deeper than stock aluminum transmission pan.
Now to my question: would a transmission oil pan designed for a 4L60E fit the SS tranny (4L70E)? My limited understanding is that the answer is yes but it's always good to ask :)
Thank you for listening...

I'd say a good way to check would be to go to the autoparts store and compare the gaskets

I thought I read that the '06's came with a tranny cooler??? I could be wrong (I have an '05)
Check with www.SummitRacing.com (http://www.SummitRacing.com) for the pan...they would carry it if they are available.

if you're worried about heat in the trans, just get a bigger aux cooler, more fluid isn't gonna do as much good as a higher capacity cooler...just my:m2:

Does the TBSS already have a tranny cooler? I know my SSS did but I thought one was missing on the TBSS?
Can't answer the question about the cooler (don't know if our trucks have one already), but I can tell you that any money invested in a pan would be wasted. At most the extra fluid would be cooled 1-2 degrees, which is nothing in the grand scheme of things.
Unlike the 4L80E, which can benefit from an aftermarket, deeper pan, the 4L60/65/70E series of transmissions really don't suffer from high heat. If you must do something for peace of mind, get an aftermarket cooler, but don't bother with an aftermarket pan.
Let us know what you find about the stock setup, I'm curious.

I somewhat agree with what you have stated but an oil pan, besides having the ability to hold more fluid (a plus), will also have a drain plug which most stock pans don't have. This will make changing the oil and filter much easier and therfore will happen more often... that's just human nature :D
I will also use an external cooler in combination with the pan. Ultimately, both will help and not cost an arm and a leg...

Forgot completely about the lack of a drain plug in the stock pan - which I still can't believe - but this alone would make it worth changing the pan.

 considering that a B&M pan is about $150.00.

The only tranny cooler it has is the one built into the radiator. It does not have auxilaiary cooler:no:

Howdy all,
First post.
I had a 96 Impala SS with the 4L60E trans. I replaced the stock pan with one from a late model truck that was deeper and had a drain plug. I don't have the stock number anymore since I gave all that stuff away to the lucky guy that bought the car. It held about a quart and a half more fluid and was a bolt on. I'm almost positive that this would fit our trannies also.
Hope this helps.
