View Full Version : Headers?? custom headers for a turbo?

I was just looking around yesterday and found some Hedman headers for the 02 envoy and was wondering if they are performance headers and if they would actually do anything. Another question i had was if anyone knew about how much it would cost for a shop to make custom headers? I am contemplating stepping up to putting a turbo on the envoy. It would take a while to get enough money to do that but its fun to dream and maybe if its not to expensive, but custom headers would be a big part of the cost it seems like. Reading the other thread where the turbo project is happening, moving the other engine parts doesnt sound as expensive but i know some mechanics that would help for real cheap just for the fun of it.

the headman headers are not in production yet and they are not sure when they wil be out I spoke with them a few times. the custom headers you will have to visit an exhaust place but they might cost from 450 to 750 depending on what you use for piping and what the shop near you wants to charge you every shop is a little different. If you wanted a header for a turbo look at what has been done he actually came off the end of the factory header and made a flange and turned up into the turbo. which from what I hear the factory header is stronger, some aftermarket headers can warp I have seen this happen on a freinds mustang and the weren't cheap ones either.

:iagree: just flip the stock header like they do the 6.0 truck mani's on the f-bods and trucks. They will be way stronger then anything u will get at an exhaust shop(unless you spend bukoo bucks), and will last, most likely, the life of ur truck.

Im kinda confused. i undestand why the stock header would be stronger but instead of a custom one for a turbo you take the exhaust pipe and turn it uo so it can go to the turbo? I am somewhat(not really) familiar with turbo setups but i am having a hard time picturing that piece. would i still be able to use my borla?

here's a quick pic in MS Paint to show how the manifold would get turned upsidedown for a turbo setup

so it really is just turning it upside down so it comes up instead of down?

You'll need a downpipe from the turbo to your cat. And as stated before, you'll need a custom flange because your manifold bolt holes won't line up when you flip it.

Thanks alot i understand now. That diagram was really helpful. It seems like the setup for a turbo might cost less than i though if i am able to flip the header and just get a custom flange instead of a custom header. Seems like the piping would probobly cost the most, but then again new fuel pump and injectors arent really cheap either. Well once i save up enough money ill try it, hopefully i can get some peopel i know to do this for around $3k.

:m2:

From a practical sense, I'd go with a supercharger over a turbo on the TB. You'd get an instantaneous power increase in the lower rpms, which would definitely help in towing (and lighting up those tires  ).

With a turbo, you have to wait for the turbo to spool up (also known as turbo lag, and is usually dependent on how big the turbo is) and a noticeable performance increase doesn't usually happen until you get higher in the rpm range.

And for $3k, I think you could research and put together a nice supercharger set up.

I guess it depends on the application... but did you really buy a TB to take it to the track :)

Obviously i didnt buy my envoy for that but it would still be sweet to do. I really just like working on new things and custom applications. I am not sure where i would go to get a supercharger made since whipple stopped making them. I agree though about the instantanious powers since that where the voy lacks the most. I also wonder what the limit untill i would have to start replacing other parts like the differential and trans. I am not looking to start replacing everything just for something new and fast. I dont need go all out and i am not taking it to the track but i would like to use some type of forced induction.

So did the guy who posted the pics of the turbo tb project flip the header and if he didnt how did he do it? It also looks like the down pipe is gunna be a tight fit going back down through the engine compartment.

These two threads are an overview of his buildup thus far... there's pretty good detail of what he has done so far.

But to answer your question.. he did not flip the manifold. He used 2.5" stainless from the manifold to the turbo and moved the power steering reservoir and bent the oil dipstick tube a few inches to get some clearance.

I wonder then if that is the best was or if fliping the manifold would be easier. Well theres definatley one to find out, try it. Im gunna be gone all summer at basic training but maybe when i get back, and its still warm outside, ill give a try.

For all the stuff that could go wrong and all, it might just be best if i wait until travis is done and see what he comes up with. Sounds like a new tranny or at least a rebuilt one is in order. Soooooo much money, its still fun though.
