When I switch the selector to a4wd to 2wd or vise versa, the front end makes a noticable clunk. It also hates corners and the rear if you come to a stop feels like it just fell off. Shouldnt it switch off/on as needed automaticly.

A4WD uses sensors in the transfer case to sense slippage between front and rear. It should be transferring no torque forward UNTIL it senses that slippage. But the transfer case encoder motor moves a lever to be ready to transfer torque, compared to the resting position of 2WD.
Have you checked the transfer case fluid level recently, or ever? Change it at 50K miles?
How many miles?
How about the front differential fluid level?
Any error codes or "service 4WD" light, or flashing light on the 4WD control switch?

no error codes, and I have never changed the fluid though I have only owned it for about a month.
