View Full Version : Volant - Rough Idle

I purchased my 2004 I6 in November of 2004. I have never taken it to the dealership ever since. Last week, I brought the EXT in for brake problems. I also complained of the SES light coming on from time to time.
Before I went in, I took the Volant off and reinstalled the stock intake.
They didnt know why the SES light came on, but they did update my PCM.
I've just re-installed the Volant. But I noticed that while driving at very slow speeds (parking lot), the engine seems louder. The idle between 500 - 1500 RPM would fluctuate (foot NOT on pedal). I've never heard my TB do this before.
Please post possible solutions! Thanks!

When they flash the PCM it has to relearn everything again. I am assuming that's why you're idle is fluctuatuing. I wish I could explain more, but that's all I know. Also, make sure the Volant is hooked up correctly and everything is tight, it could be a a vacuum line.

Yeah your PCM learns while it is at Idle .. but the RPM should not fluctuate all that much. You're saying that it goes between 500-1500 RPM ? Thats way too much, and like the post above mentions, you may have a vacuum leak that would cause a very erratic idle, or a sensor is giving the PCM false readings. If you have a light, you may be able to pull some codes from the PCM with an OBD2 scanner.

Sorry about that, I didnt mean the EXT would fluctuate its idle between 500 and 1500 RPM. The idle fluctuation occurs in this range.
It is almost unnoticable. The needle only goes up 1 or 2 ticks and down again. It keeps doing that until I completely stop or when I go above 10MPH.
Yes, this "problem" is small. I just didnt notice it before.

I wouldnt worry about it too much, its a normal operation of the PCM to learn at idle. It usually does it when you reflash the PCM or leave the battery unplugged for a couple hours, or if you change things like the intake system.

thank you for the replies. I hope nothing bad happens.

I had my share of playing around with air filters and intakes....
the idle rpm fluctuating is normal during the learning process. It will stop and idle normal when it's finished.

How long does it take the PCM to relearn? i have an 03 trailblazer LTZ stock and just replaced the battery, now i cannot keep it running at stoplights, the idle drops down to 300-400 and occasionally dies. i thought the alternator was bad, and took it off and had it checked, but was told it was good. both the alternator shop and another mechanic told me the PCM would relearn, but i have driven it 100+ miles since then and it still runs like crap.
