I'm putting this in 4x4 problems because i didint have this noise until i used four wheel drive on friday (which was the first time since i bought the car in october)
any way, when you are in 2 wheel drive in most any automatic, when you release your foot from the brake from a stop, the car will inch forward without the gas pedal being pushed... same goes in reverse.
when in 4 wheel drive, the car will not start to inch forward, it will remain where it is until you give it gas...
my problem is, i used 4 wheel drive on friday to make it up my hill and everything was fine. put it back in 2 wheel drive (i knew it had engaged in 2 wheel because i peeled out accidentally on the ice), pulled it in the garage, went on with my day. later, i went to back out of the garage (in 2 wheel drive) and for one, it didnt start to inch backwards when i took my foot off the brake, also there was a wierd rubbing noise once it started moving backwards, and it felt sort of like it was still in 4 wheel... or struggling to change out of it. as stated before i knew i had shut the car off in 2 wheel drive. this noise and strange acting only happens when in reverse though and it did it about 3 more times that day even though i hadnt messed with the 4wheel, 2 wheel thing at all. i havent heard the noise again since friday though and i have used 4 wheel drive on saturday and earlier today so i dont know what it could be any suggestions?? transfer case maybe or something like that.

Welcome! For almost all of the 70's and 80's a large group of my college friends would camp with me every August down the road from you at Hermit Island. Fond memories of beaches, hiking, deer, and thunderstorms, and not-so-fond ones of skeeters and green heads.

Anyway, your odd symptoms could be from TC or front diff issues.

But let's start with motherhood and apple pie things. If you bought your 2002 on the used market, how many miles on it? Do you know the pedigree of the maintenance? If not, and if you don't have receipts passed on from the former owner, it should be on your list to change all the fluids in the TC and both diffs. The TC is especially prone to grabbiness with low or aged fluid. We just had a couple of reports from owners who found zero fluid in their front diffs! Winter in Maine is a worse time to service it than in October, but let's hope you have access to a heated garage.

I'll second what Roadie said about the differential. Had that problem before I replaced mine.

well thanks, should i bring it to my mechanics to get it flushed or can i do that myself without prior experience? i keep my car in a radiant floor heated garage at all times, and my mechanics have a heated garage but they tend to take their time with projects haha

**forgot this** also had 86xxx miles, and the used dealer i got it from gave me a bunch of reciepts on work they did to it (mostly suspension and brakes) they had it for 3 years and there was one owner before me who had it in mass.

There's a how to on the differential fluid change, I'll get the link for ya. I did mine a few thousand miles ago, I'll probably do it again come spring.

real easy to do make sure that you also do your transfer case... mine was never changed before i owned it and with 125 k on it the metal flakes is what ate up my 4wd clutch.. make sure to get a gasket for rear bowl

I just reused the same gasket for the rear, haven't had any trouble with it. Just make sure the gasket hasnt ripped or anything.
