View Full Version : Resonator being replaced with a turndown.

Has anyone here just hacked there resonator off and repaced it with a tip or a turn down? Any annoying sound increase or resonance? I wanted to hide the tailpipe up under the TB and have a turndown right behind the bumper. I just want to know if I should re-consider for noise increase reasons. A little noise will not matter, just do not want to notice it while driving.
I noticed zrwon used a nice stainless muffler with tips, if I am gong to get noise increase, I will just go this route. The 5 gallon drum look is buggin me :D

I wouldn't eliminate it all together... it's there for a reason. I think your best bet is to go with a setup like zrwon has so you don't get a ton of issues sound-wise.

I know you are right Charlie, it changes everything since I need to find a suitable unit to replace the factory one. I want small, yet affective. I will research later today to see what I can find. I have an apt at the muffler shop for Tuesday. May need to bump it forward.

The frist time, I installed a Flowmaster 40 series on my TB, my resonator was removed it was to loud. I removed the Flowmaster 40 series and re-installed the factory muffler without a resonator and it really was not much of a sound increase inside or out.

The way I see it, you're much better off doing it right the first time than being in a hurry to pull parts off or add ones on. I talked to my muffler shop about something similar and they told me I might hear some more exhaust from inside the cabin that "would sound like a bad muffler" and said I should just get a different resonator. They know how picky I am about odd sounds, and don't want me back on a weekly basis to have it checked!
For now, I'm taking it in to have a tip welded onto the stock setup, and saving up for a borla or corsa kit. :m2:

What I think I will do is cut off the factory resonator and see what it sounds like, but have on hand a replacement setup. If I do not use it, I can just return it. It may be something that turns out fine. Either way I should be covered by having one on hand.

Not a day goes by that I'm not tempted to hack off that resonator. But besides not being able to afford $1000 for the Borla system, it wouldn't fit my EXT anyway. I can't find anyone who makes an aftermarket one for my truck. I'm pretty sure I'd have to go custom. I've been quoted anywhere from $299 (by a place that was falling down around us) to $350 all the way up to $500+. I'm with Charlie. I'm gonna slowly stash some money and get it done right the first time...

Not a daul tip fan, but like the concept of the stainless muffler. He is using a Magnaflow I believe. He posted the setup on the Envoy forum.
Matt. the reason I am doing it this way is because I do NOT want a full aftermarket exhaust, I only want to clean the look up of the factory, without making more noise. I like the factory quiet. Money is not the issue, it is the look and function of how I want it. ;)

Joey, money IS the issue for me. My wife and 2 sons dictate how much I can spend on the TB. Well, the wife does anyway. :D
I was just saying that I'd like a new exhaust too. I'm all OCD about symmetry, and at some point I have to have dual tips. I just gotta start saving...

I hear you bro, when I say money is not an issue, I don't mean I have it falling out of my pockets, that is just an expression I use to say, I will get it done the way I want to so I don't watse more changing it later :D Trust me, my wife puts a tight grip on my, I mean OUR money also. ;)
I like the benefits of a nice Borla or Corsa, etc full system, but do not want to change the tone. I think it will end up being another resonator/muffler at the end of the setup to replace the current coffee can, but I will keep yall posted as to what I do for others future reference.

Does anyone know the diameter (OD) of the pipe going into the resonator? If not I will get under the TB to measure.

If it's the same as the pipe on the OTHER side of the resonator (tailpipe/turn-down) it's 2-5/8"

If you like factory quiet (like me) you will find hacking the resonator off will get you some good noise. That fugly pos is actually doing some kind of job in keeping things quiet. The 4.2L I-6 can develop a real drone at 1500 to 2000 rpm's in drive. With my Borla I have looks, but lots of drone in that rpm range.

DO NOT REMOVE THE RESONATOR :D It sounds like dookie. I had them install a all turn down until I find a new stainless unit to put back in. The 1500-2000 range is exactly where the humming (resonance) comes from.

Well taken care off, after test fitting about 7 different sport compact mufflers on my TB, I ended up with the Magnaflow dual tip one that ZRWON has, after seeing it up to the TB it looked the best IMO, and from the rear the dual tips cover the can. I was not digging the dual tips until I saw it. Will get some pics posted after it gets welded on.
