View Full Version : 1st time at the track; results:
steined
02-25-2006, 05:20 PM
Observations:
1.) Can leave harder but TQM is killing the launch
2.) D and 3 upshift short of redline
3.) Can't hold 1 and 2 with shifter, it is WAAAY too slow to respond
Conditions:
40 - 50 * F
15 - 20 MPH winds. Some of the winds (at times all) were a headwind
Overcast
4780 LBS Weight as raced (includes me - 200LBS, 1/4 tank of gas, all mats, etc.
I tried to launch by brake torquing and I need practice. I didn't get a good look at the RPMs but at one point I started spinnig tires at the line!
Results:
From 14.666 when holding gears (hit rev limiter not once but twice)
To a best of
13.878 @ 99.73 MPH with a 2.117 60'
The truck is pretty strong, I really only feel TQM at launch. I think without the headwinds I would be at 13.7X and 101 or 102 MPH
I ran about 7 times and the rest of the runs were between 13.9x and 14.1x.
I'm pretty happy with the result but can't wait to see what can be done with a tune!
Take care!

NICE times..What did Tony get?
here's some slips...40-50f winds were crosswinds (pushung the truck to the right) 15-20mph at times..I dropped a factory replacement K&N E1009 in place of the stock air filter, removed the resonator in the airbox, dropped the spare & jack at the house (track prep) aired up the fronts to 44psi and lowered the rears to 26psi..
Mine is #107

Steined, I hope you're not pissed I hijacked your thread, if you want I'll start my own, anyway, until I hear from you on that, here's some observations...
We took the grills out on the 4th or 5th run and removed the Headlight which gave the airbox a clear shot to the fresh air......DIDN'T DO DIDLEY...we even experimented with (no laughing please) folding the mirrors in!! no gain, on my 13.49 & all the low .50's runs H/L intact & mirrors out (normal position) the track was biting well I could launch at 1700rpm or so and barely a chirp, later I lowered the rears to 22psi and no spin at all and I was able to pull some 2.02 60's, but other than that I left it in "D" and held on tight..
I even got to run a Jeep SRT8 (that's the slip I didn'thave room for on the other post, I'll post it in this one (go figure I run the Jeeps and make it the worst run of the friggin day:hissy: ) his reaction time to mine and in the end he only beat me by a car (my bumper on his), I thought I had run better that run because he ran a pair of 13.29's right before runnin me!!
I have 1350mi on the truck, original oil and had a 1/4tank mobil 93..
top slip is just another 13.50+ run under is the Jeep SRT8 vs me...(why couldn't I had that .49 on that run??) even the guy runnin the water box approached my passenger window and says," hey, you think you can run with that HEMI?? I am a Chevy guy but can you do it??" I said I am gonna try my best, and rewarded him with a pitiful 13.6+??? truck got scared, don't tell anybody..lol
all in all I am very happy with it's performance and must say this should answer the Question as to "which is faster?" at the track it's definately the 2WD's!! lol (Silver especially:D )

didn't bother, that's my baseline, figured the K&N wouldn't do much at all, so the truck is stock with a K&N and some track prep, all things that are normal in a trip to the track (air pressure, spare & jack removed and all other loose items except the front mats) so if you want to add a tenth to my times it still would be a solid 13.50-.60 truck, stock, do yourself a favor and replace the air filter w/ a K&N and do a little track prep (I probably removed 60-70lbs from it before I ran) we made 2 passes with the H/L out and saw ZERO gain so it went back in.. the resonator indside the airbox doesn't do anything other than make the intake louder (sounds nice, along with the K&N)

Yeah, we had a great time, more of you guys should of come, it was alot of fun, next time hopefully some of you guys will take the training wheels off your SS's and drive it likeit was meant to be!! on the track whoopin Mustangs!! I whooped up on this 98-00 Cobra that was runnin 13.8's, I said to the slip girl," Hey, when you give this GT guy his slip (he was right behind me), ask him how it feels to get whooped by an SUV!!" I also beat a C5 that ran 13.3 to my 13.5 cause he slept at the tree (that was another as I am crossing the finish line "MY GOD THISTRUCK IS QUICK!!" moments, as I'm sure most in the stands were thinking the same thing!
I'll tell you what, I'd a paid someone a $100 if I could've gotten my 13.49 vs. his 13.35 run...I was cutting good lights most of the day, I would've crossed the finish line tied or ahead with the lights I was cutting..lol he beat me by .3 on our race, yet the R/T was in my favor so at the end I was on his bumper (only lost by .2 on the slip, only started to pull, very slowly mind you, at about 80 or so, up until then I was in front of him on the run, you can't imagine what was going through my mind:eek: !!) we have vid of some of the runs, when Ludacrist finds his USB cable:duh: , and then the two of us:duh: :duh: figure out how to upload it to his site!!:dielaugh: that'll be able to be viewed sometime in 07'!!!

it's a s400 cable and we should have it up by 07. lol.. From the burnout box it looked like you had the srt8 till the big end . the transfercase in the srt8 alows more rear tire slip they even started to smoke . BTW C5 was a Girl . I beat that C4 .
That's right it was a girl! rub it in why don't ya! that's got to look awsome beating the SRT8 from a dig! who'd a thunk it (I am in my own little fantasy world leave me alone:cool: LOL).

Do these motors get faster with break-in...? All of the shootouts I have read (3 now) have put the 1/4 time at right around 14.00 stock with minimal miles for these road tests, but people are clearly getting sub-14 times broken in. Thoughts?
I'm heading out Wednesday night (Mar. 1st if no rain) to Sacramento Raceway, but that will be VMT modified. :D

Almost all GM motors seem to get more powerful as they break in. I had 1000 miles on her when I took it to the track. I'd bet at 12,000 and nothing else done it would run a tenth or 2 better all things being equal.
Look in the C&D 40,000 mile tests, GM cars almost ALWAYS get faster. The sierra's and tahoe's got a lot faster.

I agree, I know my TBs I6 has really started to be quicker, not from the line (Damn TQ Management:mad: ), but once I hit ~3000RPMs, it really starts to pull hard until like 5800. I have amazed quite a few of my friends, and I dont even have the SS!!

No need to vote...i am going to add it but it will take some to re-code it to work with this latest version of vb. So just hang in there for a bit. I have one or two other things to finish first, then everything should fall into place. :)

If I could've run my best time of the day on that run, I would've beat him outright (to the finish line, not E.T.) that would've been awsome..

Tony,
Awesome times.
Now that snowmobiling season is done I am back to the cars and truck.
NE Dragway opens in two days and if the weather is nice...of course the only chance for rain in NE...is on Sat...but anyway...I wanted to hear a recap of what you did to run mid 13s...
Sounds like a K&N drop in panel filter...the head light thing did nada...the intake tube made no difference, but is that true? I saw about 22 PSI in the rears and 44 PSI up front. I assume you are disabling the Stabililink and TCS and then just leaving it in D b/c I am sure with 4:10s we are crossing the 1/4 mi in 4th gear right? Thanks man. I am praying this AWD can break into the 13s. :hail:
Then come the mods.
