TB Lover 02-27-2006, 03:38 PM I was just wondering if any of you have experienced the Stability control, what led up to the event and your general thoughts on it (it's intrusive, hardly noticed, I may have had an event but not sure, etc...). Just wondering about real world occurances and feelings about this technology.
Thanks.:undecided
Fleet 02-27-2006, 03:46 PM Mine kicked in this morning on my SS. As I was turning into the parking lot at work, I got caught on some ice. As I was spinning like a top, the Stabilitrac icon popped on my dash. I did get control back, with no issues. Just my heartrate spiking.
The SS did shake pretty good when it activated.
StabiliTrak sometimes enables when I throw it into corners. It selectively locks up certain brakes (i.e. left front + right rear) and stops what could potentially be a slide.
It is a good thing for the most part, but now that I've pushed the vehicle enough to have it enable a few times, I think it is somewhat crude and unrefined. It serves its purpose, but it could be a little smoother (i.e. 60% brake apply rather than 100%).
If I ever want to get crazy I just turn it off. :D

I wish that it was more like a switch you push instead of having to hold down a button so you could turn it off all the time. That way, especially if you are at the track you wouldnt forget to turn it off.
600rrjoe 02-28-2006, 12:24 AM mine probably saved my life and the the fact there was a reinforced guard rail i hit. i was doing 70-75 when i lost control and we spun numerous times then the car righted itself and came to a stop in a very short distance from where i hit the guard rail. It felt like we where on two wheels from side to side, theres no telling what the outcome would have been without. It certainly kept the shiney side up.

I agree that overall it is a good thing. It is somewhat crude in its implementation, but the technology will be improved upon with successive iterations. If the choice is Stabilitrak or no, I think it is certainly better to have it.
steined 02-28-2006, 05:41 PM You CAN turn it off...
If you think about how hard it is to bring a 4600 + LBS high center of gravity SUV under control, it makes sense that it will be somewhat abrubt in actions and activation. This isn't a low center of gravity vette. I've activated Stabillitrack twice now, once on a turn from a stop light in the rain, (too much pedal!), and once coming hot into a corner with gravel. I don't really have any complaints about how it is implemented... ESPECIALLY SINCE YOU CAN TURN IT OFF! ;)
I find the stabilitrack part is fine, it's the traction control that stinks...
In snow if you start to slide the stabitrack will help the vechicle go where you're trying to aim nicely it but the traction control can completely disable the gas pedal while you're sliding. ...which means that as you slide into the wrong lane going around a corner too fast you lose the ability to get yourself back to the right side of the road...
I grew up in Quebec where driving on snow is a normal occurance and I've been driving 4x4's for quite a while, In my opinion this system is obviously designed for those who aren't adept at driving in snow.
I leave the TC off anytime it's at all slippery, I just don't trust it...
SSmokinTB 02-28-2006, 09:23 PM If you drive smooth it is hard to activate the Stability control (other than snow & ice.) With TC off I've had mine in a fantastic 4-wheel drift in the rain without even a peep from the Stability control. I like having it for situations like 600rrjoe described where you need all the help you can get. Most of the time I just putt-putt around with both TC and SC on. Then again, with AWD the TC doesn't need much help.
TB Lover 03-03-2006, 08:44 AM Thanks for the input. I still don't know what to make of this technology. I'll have to experience it for myself one day. It seems overall that it's been a good experience for those who have experienced/used it though.

IMO Stabilitrac is a great system. And quite advance, if you think of what it takes to detect the slid as well as take over control of throttle and independantly brake each tire to correct a slide, it is not easily achieved. Of course better technology will be available as time passes, but this is truely a good system given today limits.
JLMXTRM 03-28-2006, 05:56 PM I have experienced the Stabilitrack in out 04 AWD Tahoe. Without it probably would have rolled it. I had to make a rapid lane change at about 65-70MPH. Once it kicked in the Tahoe almost immediately corrected it's self. I am a firm believer in the system! Now on my SS on the other hand turn the whell and punch the gas and wham Stabilitrack! Albeit you can turn it off for those fun AWD Drifting sessions. But the system as a whole I think every car should have it standard!:m2:
Nordschleife 03-28-2006, 06:48 PM Every morning when I cross a set of R/R trax on top of a steep hill the TC comes on. If I let off the throttle when I crest the top it does nothing. When I stay on it, it kicks on every time. I hope if I get a tune from Vector it will take care of it.

trlbzrss 04-14-2006, 07:31 PM My wife was coming home today driving 65 MPH when the T.C. light started flashing and she said it felt like the truck was lugging down. The TC light never came on steady so I went to check. I found nothing wrong and it drove home with no problem. Onstar did a diagnostic check and found nothing wrong. Could it have been a pebble in the sensor or "just a glitch?"
I can't remember. Do all TBs come with StabiliTrak?
I've only had the ABS activate on rare occasion. Once in loose dirt/mud and once on ice. But I've never driven it hard enough to get into any real trouble. For it's height (COG) and weight, it handles pretty well IMO. Going around the everyday exit, it feels pretty sure-footed.
1BADSS 04-15-2006, 11:17 AM I found out mine worked yesterday.I took off from a light turning left, then all of a sudden it felt like the truck died.I was thinking WTF.Then I remembered to hit the button and it came back alive. But yeah first time had me scared a little bit.I thought I blew it.lol

Nope, only 06+ models have it standard. I dont have it, you dont have it, etc. The closet thing to StabiliTrak in 02-05 years was traction control if you have 2WD and TC as an option.
AJSZR2326 04-20-2006, 01:30 PM press the button and put it in competition mode :) z06's forever!
