Umm, it should be a quality 5W-30, I prefer Amsoil synthetic but a lot of guys run Mobil 1 because it is much easier to get than Amsoil.

Yeah, the manual for my 2005 4.2L doesn't give you too many options. It says "5w-30 is best for your vehicle" and synthetic 5w-30 or 0w-30 can be used if temps fall below -20degF :( It says "Do not use 10w-40 or 20w-50". I suppose it's best to go by the manual, but in warm temps, your 4.2L wouldn't notice the difference between a 5w-30 or 10w-30. They are both 30wts at normal op temps. I personally would not hesitate to run 10w-30 in HOT ambient temps.

MTPocket gave you the best answer, It dpends on the weather temp. If a thicker oil is in a colder climate then it will take longer to reach proper level for operation, causing internal damage to your engine.

That's all I have ever run in mine - conventional QS 10W-30. Ambient temp rarely ever gets below 32°F here. I don't drive enough miles a year to get my moneysworth from a synthetic and I change it twice a year anyway well before the OLI comes on. My I6 likes it. Engine's nice and quiet especially for a 2002.
A 5W-30 will start with a 5W base oil and they add Viscosity Improvers (VI) to make it act like a 30W hot. Starting with a 10w base oil for 10W-30, they don't have to use as much VI additive. This mostly applies to conventional "dino" oil.

Most cars with new engines use 5w30 oil .. if you have an older vehicle or high mileage I would recommend 10w30.

Actually a lot of new cars spec 5W-20! My Trailblazer Owner's manual says on page 6-13 that 10W-30 is fine above 0°F and I prefer to use it for the reason I stated before - more base oil, less VI additive.

Yeah my 2001 ford windstar specs 5w-20 only, as does more and more vehicles these days. Since I had a bunch on hand awhile back I ran a few oil change intervals of it on my 2002 isuzu 3.2 that specs anything beween 5w-30 and 20w-50  . She ran as smooth as a top on it, but I got spooked (for no reason really) and went back to 5w-30, then tried shell rotella-t 5w-40, then sold her for the TB:weird: .

GM 6094M spec oil must be used
No problem... I feel even more confident in it now!
QUAKER STATE® PEAK PERFORMANCE MOTOR OILS
• Performance in GM 6094 M specification (SAE 5W-30 and SAE 10W-30)
Looked in my 2002 Owner's Manual, doesn't get that specific just says use an API SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30, even straight 30W is OK if above 32°F. Did that 6094 spec even exist in 2002? It relates to cold flow only.

I don't see Amsoil on that GM list....Wazzup with that??? I know that GM has no problem with us using it,or any other motor oil, as long as it is API certified...
