Since I put taller tires on the EXT, the underbody spare has been rendered useless. So I took it off today and still have the can of Fix-A-Flat in the truck. Who else with aftermarket wheels and/or tires (with a different overall diameter than stock) removed theirs? Any problems besides the big hole left under the back of the truck now? I figure the weigh reduction should be a slight positive. :m2:

i haven't done this, but often thinking about it. i have 22's and im not sure how the difference is between the two wheels and not sure if it will still work or not.

So if you get taller tires, the spare is useless??

Useless to get you out of a bind and to a the closest repair shop or safe place? No. Practical for everyday use? Yes.
I would leave the spare. It will still get you out of a bind in a jam where sometimes fix-a-flat won't. I have seen guys hobble off of the trail with a 31" spare and 35" meats the rest of the way around.

use it for temporary used to get the full size one fixed just like small cars with the donut tire just limit the mileage traveled on the different ones and if you have to go far rotate it to the front

if the total diameter of the tire is off, you run the risk of ruining differentials. if you put it on the front, and you have the vehicle in 2wd, you should be fine, but if you have AWD, or use it for a rear tire...you could have some serious issues with the g80, it'll keep locking the tires as if one is spinning too fast and keep them rotating the same amount...and since the rolling diameter is different you'll either be chirping a tire or toasting the g80. i know this because i blew the viscous coupling out of my eclipse using a different size tire for all of 10 miles... so basically, if you had to get the speedo recalibrated with the new tires, don't use the spare :m2:

So when i upgrade the tires (to taller ones), i can use the factory spare for front tires only.

thats what i think. someone correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldn't 2 different diameter tires cause the g80 to lock up?

I'd think I'd rather be towed somewhere than risk using that tiny spare, so I just bought "Large Tire Fix-A-Flat" at Target to replace the can I had for my girlie-man tires. My new tires are 2.2" taller. It's not a negligable difference.
I would keep the spare tire unless you put run flats on a car, especially if you travel in a remote area.
Weight savings is great but you are only looking at around .1 % of the total vehicle weight. The spare also helps you in a rear end collision (protects the gas tank).
Some locking/dif systems are more sensitive then others. Audi's are known to be extremely picky. Some 4WD vehicles use a donut spare tire which is definitely smaller then the OEM tires. I wouldn't use it for more than getting to the next repair shop though and at slow careful speeds.

I wasn't really doing it for the weight reduction, I was just making light of the fact that I no longer seem to have a usable spare. Eventually, I'd like to get a roof rack like the roadie has and keep a full size 265/70R17 spare chained down up there, but that requires more money than I have right now. :m2:

so i'm guessing the problem would be the differential locking on you if you had a smaller spare on one of the rear tires? I would think on truck without a g80 it wouldn't be a problem running a smaller spare if necessary.

yeah, without the g80 it shouldn't be a problem at all. do you guys without the g80 have any kind of lsd, or not?? and how does the awd system in the tbss and bravada work, is it a viscous coupling or what?

The G80 locks up with a 200 RPM difference between the wheels. 60 MPH is 88 feet per second. Tire circumference is about 10 feet, so the tires are rotating about 9 revs per second, times 60 seconds per minute = 540 RPM. You'd need about 40% diameter difference to attract any unwanted attention from the G80.
But the G80 has a max engagement speed of 20 MPH, so lockup isn't a danger.

I kept mine there, and bought a second spare steel rim from Coloradowheels to mount in the hitch receiver with another factory Continental. I've had two flats in a day on a previous van on an Oregon logging road, so when I'm offroad alone, I carry both.
I was just a little too frugal to buy a fifth, or sixth, Silent Armor.

Has anybody actually tried to get a 265/70-17 up under the rear of the TB?
Also, it looks like there is room towards the rear axle to accomodate that tire size...
