View Full Version : Series 77 K&N Intake Installed - Wife Not Happy...

Well, I did the install today. It was simple to do and I want to go ahead and say I have one of these on my F150 Supercrew and My PT Cruiser GT and love them.

But, today I am not happy at with this on my TB. I think it looks great but the sound is too much for my wife's liking.

When you get on it the sound is raspy. Since my wife is going to drive it more than me, she wanted the performance but not the raspy sound. On the PT is sounds great because you can hear the Turbo sucking in the air, sounds like a nitrous blast. On the F150 you can hear it suck in air which sounds great. But on the TB you get more of a rumble sound.

So, for those of you out there that has a CAI on your TB tell me stories. What does it sound like? Are the Volant CAI quieter?

Now, if it was going to be my daily driver I would keep it and get my dual exhaust put on, that would correct the sound I am hearing now. But since my wife is not up for that noise, I am going to have to do something different. I am thinking about just putting the K&N Filter on and keep the stock air intake stuff. Or go with the Volant system - give me your ideas.

The Series 77 Intake is an awesome performer, I noticed instant throttle response and pick up. Like I said if it was my daily driver it would stay. So, with that said, I am taking it off tomorrow and will list it for sale here. I do not want to return it because they will charge me a re-stocking fee and I have to pay for shipping.

I knew there would be some sound but I was hoping it would pass the wife test like it did on the PT and F150. I just think the TB is such a quiet ride that she just is not happy with it. Oh well - check out the For Sale forum if you want one that has been used for 1 hour.

I have a rock it dual intake on mine. Like you, I am very satisfied with it but it is a bit loud for some people. Im not sure about this but i think that the other k&n intake for it (pretty sure its simply called a FIPK) would not be as loud because if i remember right the series 77 is more of an of road type of intake. Again im not completely sure.

Did you have to remove the silencer (the thing that says Vortech 4200 on it)? If so that may be your culprit...

I have a Volant on my '03 Envoy. It does add a little noise to the cabin when you accelerate. The noise is tolerable for me, but as you are finding out, different people have different levels of tolerance. :m2:

You do have to remove the silencer:

I am afraid that it is looking like the stock air intake with a K&N drop in filter is the safest bet.

In the Volant setup do you remove the silencer?

I do not know about the volant, but I know for a fact that the AIRAID intake you do not have to remove the silencer/resonator because I have the throttle body spacer. It officially wont work with any intake that removes the silencer, and I have seen pics of the airaid. However, the K&N drop in is what I did, only cost me $55 through http://www.AJUSA.com

Good luck!!

yeah i've got the airaid one. To be honest i couldn't notice any sound difference at all.

I have seen two install pictures of the Volant CAI on a TB/Envoy. The first one does not have the silencer:

The other one, from Volant's site, shows it with the silencer. It makes me wonder if they modified the tube?

Which one does yours look like? What are your ideas on modifying the tube to accept the silencer? That is not an option on the Series 77.

I have to wonder if that volant with no resonator/silencer is actually an 05.... I know there are a few differences between the 05s and the 02-04s.

Same here. Unless you're at WOT. Then it picks up a bit. ;)

I would venture to guess (though I've never seen one for this application in person) that it's open underneath the "box" like the airraid and others, but has the lid in place to shield the intake from sucking hot air from under the hood (increasing effectiveness) and shield the engine from the elements (less moisture and random debris getting in). :m2:

Well, I ended up going with the Volant CAI. Being a huge K&N fan I am kind of sad that I could not keep the Series 77. But, when I get depressed I just run out to the F150 and look at it there!!

The Volant was on sale, $30 off at Truckperformance.com and it was in stock. The Airaid was back ordered 1-2 weeks. I think I just like the idea of the filter being in the box since I do not want to chance having to take out another one because of noise.

I will post when I get it installed.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. It helped me a lot.

Well, it came in and it is still sitting in the box!! It arrived right as everything got real busy around here. So, I hope to put it on this Saturday. It is weird though, the directions do not show keeping the silencer in place??

I will update this weekend after I install it.

See, now I would have been all excited, and I would have had to put it on right away. But I do sense a little disappointment from you because you couldn't keep the K&N, so I understand.... ;)

I have seen two install pictures of the Volant CAI on a TB/Envoy. The first one does not have the silencer:
http://www.stylinconcepts.com/images/GeneratedImages/F/F119062E6F5455874B55CF9ED6C5535E.jpeg

The other one, from Volant's site, shows it with the silencer. It makes me wonder if they modified the tube?
http://www.volantperformance.com/3dkls/iddb/Pictures/15642i.jpg

Which one does yours look like? What are your ideas on modifying the tube to accept the silencer? That is not an option on the Series 77.

I was told that the first picture with the silencer removed was an earlier model and that Volant then changed the setup to implement the silencer later on.

I'm still debating which one to get. The K&n, Airaid, or Volant? I've read a million post about the 3 and everyone likes one or the other. I'm guessing they're all about the same, but some are louder than others, and the cost is a little different... I hate choices. Why couldn't there just be one. :hissy:

Jman423
02-24-2006, 11:48 AM
I would say that the performance is the same, it's just that Volant costs a little more because you actually get the whole airbox. The Volant that keeps the resonator is about the quietest you will be able to get, and that is the only type they make anymore :m2:

I was told that the first picture with the silencer removed was an earlier model and that Volant then changed the setup to implement the silencer later on.

That is correct. The original 02 volant model went right to the throttle body. What they found was that by keeping the resonator in, they actually were able to capture more HP.

The Volant was what I used and it did keep the silencer/resonator in place. It looks great, sounds great and works great!! I am very happy!! The sound is great and the wife is happy!!

Yes - In the end that is what allows me to sleep with both eyes closed!! :D

I ordered mine from: http://www.truckperformance.com/products/searchtype_d/sortorder_DAA/productcategory_Air+Intake+Kits/category_Air+Intake/sf1_CHEVROLET/sf2_2002/sf3_TRAILBLAZER/sf4_4.2l/partnumber_VOL15642/

That should take you right to it. Takes about 30-45 mins to install, not bad at all. The only thing you will need to do is make a hole for the gauge that you see sticking out of mine. There is no hole for it and I am not even sure if you need it. I just wanted to keep things in place.

The Volant was never available for the 5.3 when I was looking a year or so back. I still don't think it is? In any event, I'm happy with the K&N. I don't think it is all that noisy. Then again, I'm normally playing the music...........LOUD. :)

Never mind the picture they show.
This picture is a representation of the product and may not be the actual application photo for your vehicle.
No cutting will be required only the hole for the filter gauge if you want to use it.

Also the Series 77 is different in that is has an aluminum tube instead of a plastic one. That is the main difference, some say that the aluminum tube allows for better air flow because it is smooth but others say that it makes the air hotter because it is not plastic. I say it really does not matter and that it depends on which look you want. Either way, I had the series 77 on mine and it was way too loud!

Here is a picture of it installed before I removed it:
