Hey guys,

I know there were a few posts on this regarding CB radios in some other posts, but I'm just curious, I'm looking to mount an antenna on my truck for my scanner, I'm looking to use a glass window mount one, instead of a regular magnetic standup one on my roof. Does anyone have any suggestions where to run the wire through? Thanks guys!

Those antennas don't give great rangeI mounted a antenna on the roof rack bar.You won't need to worry bringing the wire inside because the wire will already be inside and you stick the antenna side on the outside.

Can you just elaborate a little more on how I don't have to send the wire into the car somehow?

Yep!There is two parts that glue to the window. On the out side is the antenna and the other piece glues to the inside your window that has your wire on it.

Search on ebay for scanner antennas. I bought one that I attached on the inside of the back side window. It gives about 35 mile reception, depending on the frequency. Also Bearcat has some.

Luck you that you can have one in your truck. In my state you have to have a permit.

Yes, there are several states (mainly midwest/east central) that do not allow mobile scanners. Google to find them.

You don't need to have a permit to have a mobile scanner in NJ... It's illegal to use a scanner as a tool in committing a crime, but perfectly legal to have one mounted in your vehicle. NY has a scanner law, but not NJ

yeah, there's many many buffs or whackers in NY that use them, even though you're not really allowed. I myself have one. I usually just keep it in my glove box, I only really turn it on if I hear a good alarm toning out and I'm responding from a distance. I appreciate all the help guys!!!

hey all...

i just happenned upon this thread through a google search (not even thinking to look here first) i was looking for an inconspicuous antenna for my scanner, i then noticed a post here about someone using their OnStar antenna, i went out to my TB and located my OnStar unit, i ran a 6' extention from my center console, through the inner case (drilled a 1" hole) ran out throught the drivers side under where the rear carpet joins the front, ran it alonside the seat rail, under the carpet along the center hump (driverside) under the middle row seats and then across the hump to the passengers side under the carpet to the OnStar unit under the passenger side middle seat. I used a double female BNC from the OEM OnStar connector to the antenna extention (I was going to cut the OnStar cable and attach a BNC but had second thoughts for now). I also ran the power cable from the rear fuse block, under the carpet following the antenna wire.

So far the reception is great...i can hear FDNY from New Haven area. Im using a BC 350x in the center console. Wanted to use my BCT-8 but it wont fit without cutting the inner case to the center console.

I have the thru-glass in my vehicle. I would suggest not using the sticky tape on the outside antenna portion and using rearview mirror adhesive instead. I routed mine from under the console, through the dash, up the pillar, and under the headliner to the top of the windshield.

How does this do with picking up low-band freqs like 46.xx, what about the 150s? Obviously if your hearing FDNY in the 450+ range I won't have to worry about hearing highband frequencies with it. I don't plan on ever using on-star so this might be an option for me if the low-band freqs come in well.

Just got a new scanner for Christmas BCD-396XT.What a great scanner. They make a anntenna that hooks up to it(mag. style) that is like a GPS .It brings up all thats counties freq. and when you drive into the next county it brings up all their freq. and drops the last county.

sounds sweet is a scanner like that hand held or do you have to mount it somewhere in the cab

Hand held! One of the smallest and lightest and expensive I've ever seen.
