Short Drive with No Serpentine Belt

So, if you've been over to the 4.2L forum, you may have seen I'm having an engine problem. I was wondering if anyone else has ever (or if it's okay to) do a full-throttle run up through first gear with no serpentine belt on, to see if the problem is with one of the accessories or with the engine itself. I would probably take the truck out, get it up to operating temperature, come back to the house, stop, turn the engine off, take the belt off (we live on a very empty street), do the run up through first, stop, cut the truck off, and put the belt on right there. I realize that I won't have Power Steering, maybe some brakes?, and that there's no coolant going through the engine or power to the battery, but am I risking any damage doing this? I've started it in the garage for a second with no belt, again for noises, but obviously never done this.

i would NOT let it get up to operating temp as doing a hard run through first MIGHT hurt it. we did this with my friends Mustan GT tho. drove it clear down the road and up the street back to his house, maybe 1/2 of a mile, at W.O.T. and it was fine. We were also doing it for noise puroposes too:crackup:

:iagree: with the above post. keep in mind that without a belt your water pump wont be operative and you have a higher chance of overheating as well.

very true! You are fine for a SHORT drive. My buddies GT's motor was pretty built and semi high horsepower and he got nowhere close to overheating. Just be careful and use your own discretion of when to call the trip done. Oh and also to answer one of your other questions, you will have brakes as they run off vacuum and not a pulley
