Went to a local custom exhaust shop today that's done many cars for me and does very clean work.

What I want are duals that exit behind the tire on each side. Here's what he quoted me

2.75" pipe (same size as stock)
50 Series Flowmaster (single in/dual out)
Stainless Tips

$450 out the door

The tips would be the same ones he did on my Jimmy and S-10

The thought of duals out the side with Flowmaster on a V8 makes me all warm and fuzzy inside!

 Less than half of what Borla gets for their kit for the I-6.

Meineke quoted me 350 but they were hesitant to run the duals so I settled for the Flowmaster 40 and the glasspack for under 200.
If you are running duals and a Flowmaster 50 you should get an awesome sound without glasspacks for a resonator.

It won't be T-304 stainless like Borla though. The tips will be stainless and the pipes and muffler will be aluminized but I've never had an exhaust system rust out on me. I would probably paint it with high heat black paint like I've done on a couple vehicles.

Bulldog, forgive my ignorance, but what is a glasspack? also, how does your setup sound??? $200 sounds like a great price for a possible exhaust mod...

I got quoted $350-370 for duals depending on it I wanted chrome tips or not, but the place looked more like a shack than a muffler shop. So I held off. I have the 4.2L anyway. :m2:

Well I know the Stainless tips are probably adding about $100 to the price.

A Glasspack is another muffler that is a straight flow through just like a resonator. When I had a few muscle cars they had brands such as thrush, cherry bomb, etc.

SpongWell I know the Stainless tips are probably adding about $100 to the price.

I have a great stainless tip from 3A Racing and I got it at Auto Zone for about $25. The tip was welded directly onto my glasspack.

I have the 2005 5.3L V8 (WITH DOD), and im wondering, when i finally go for an exhaust system, i am thinking of going...

#1 Stock Muffler--> Glass Pack--> Polished Tip

or i might go with

#2 Stock Muffler--> Straight Pipe--> Polished Tip

I am going to have the shop chop off the stock resonator, and then fire up the TB and see how it sounds. If we like the sound, we'll go with option two, but if it is too loud, we'll go with option one.

Which do you guys think will sound better?

You have the I6 correct?

Just FYI for everyone:
The V8 with DOD has NO exhaust sound when in 4 cyl. Mode. When in 8 cyl mode, such as up a slight grade while towing, the RPM stays the same, but you can hear the exhaust note change when all 8 cylinders engage.

So highway drone will not be a problem for me.

Sounds a bit high to me bud... I would shop around or ask for a "cash" price.

Can't wait to hear it! Sure it will put my 4.2l to shame.

I paid $160 for 3" cat-back, FM 50 series (3" single in and out though), installed. That was my "cash" price. I added the tip on top of that which was hella high ($90) if you ask me, but looked so damn nice!

OK, so today I went to a muffler shop close to me, and he quoted me $325 pbut I have to buy whatever tip I want, installed and out the door. This includes 3" pipe all the way from the cat back through a Flowmaster 50 Series SUV and a 3" glasspack muffler.

My question is, this seems to be a decent price, and I know it will get done right, but with the 50 series SUV muffler with the special 'H' chamber, do I really need the glasspack? It would knock like 40 bucks off the price, but I really want it to be quiet inside and still have a mean growl when I get on it. And, he said that since he cant bend 2.75", only 2.5" or 3", and since he commented on how large the stock pipe was that he recommended going 3" all the way instead of going with 2.5" which would restrict the exhaust flow. And, he told me that Magnaflow doesnt make the 50SUV muffler in a 2.75 outlet, if I went stock size I would have neck up/downs going to and from the muffler.

Thanks everyone, and please give me your ideas! I want to give the go ahead for him to order the muffler and glasspack as he doesnt stock 3" models, only 2.5" ones, tomorrow and get this thing rolling!!!

Scarab, I would not think you need the glasspack. We use to put those on our trucks to get a nice loud exhaust. The 50 series alone is pretty loud and I have 3" cat back also. Did you watch the FM video I posted? If you did, imagine that but not recorded, compressed, piped from my webserver over my wireless internet to my router to my ISP to God knows where and through your speakers... in other words, it is at least 30% louder in person that what you heard. :m2:

Thanks, did you install a 50 series delta or a 50 series SUV as they are built differently and sound different. I was reading about bignastyjb's install, and he started with only a Flowmaster and said it resonated too much, so he went back to Meinke and had them install a dual chambered glasspack which removed a lot of the resonance and also mellowed the sound out a little. That is the only reason I am thinking about a glasspack, to help remove resonance and keep the noise at bay as it is my daily driver and trip vehicle. Cant have drone for 300miles each way times 6-10 trips per year.:duh:

But, thanks for the suggestions man, and Im wondering if I will order my muffler online for like $105 shipped and then just have it installed. But, I wonder if I will just end up ordering it and having it done ASAP!:D

P.S. I have watched it, and am watching it again right now!

No wifey Andrew:no: , so thats not an issue.:D (And if I did, she would have to be able to listen to the exhaust or not complain about the loud music to cover it up!!:D)

The RX was on long term "borrow" from my folks, and was all too ready to give it back. Man, that thing is gutless. And, they wanted me to mod it a little to get better mileage, so I swapped the fluids and then threw the K&N in there and popped the racks off. Gets a little better mileage, about 18 with 90city and 10hwy. But, that 3.0L V6 is absolutely gutless below 3500rpms, and only if it is "power" mode does it accelerate decently. Lets just say that once I got my TB back from them towing their uhaul loads and yard work stuff (and whatever else), I was ready to lean on the gas!!! :D

(And I also kindly explained to them they cant borrow it anymore, get a hitch on the RX instead!!:duh: )

:undecided delta I think.. I would have to double check that though... Guess I was wrong about the glasspacks... We did run them straight though...
No prob, I think the SUV one is a little deeper and has a slightly different baffling system that is supposed to remove some of the resonance, but since I havent heard anyone with or without a glasspack, I will have to play it by ear and probably go with the glasspack to make sure I dont have any issues down the line.

Bulldog: How does your glasspack sound? I remember my buddy having one on his Dodge, and you could hear him coming a mile away..
I have the Flowmaster 40 and without the glasspack it was very loud and sounded a bit ricey with a lot of drone inside when shifting through the gears. With the glasspack it got rid of almost all the drone and it gives the TB a great deep rumble, not to mention it gave me my gas mileage back. When you get on it the TB will turn heads but it is not ricey or obnoxious.

Yeah, mine is maybe a little higher than some places but I feel you get what you pay for. I could cut corners here and there and maybe save $100 but is it really worth it? IMO, no. This place does very nice work. There was a Super Bee and a 56 Nomad among other cars in there getting exhaust installed yesterday! He does mostly custom work and always has some sort of muscle car or hot rod in the shop. People go to him because of the quality.

I really don't think there were any corners cut when mine was installed. I had the same guy install the one on my Jeep and it has been on almost a year. Not to mention been drug all over rocks etc... There really is not that much to it. I stood right under the rack with him when he installed both of mine.

As long as the welds are clean and precise. The hangers are kept in place or replaced. The muffler is TURNED THE RIGHT WAY.. lol.. The tip is nice and level etc... Basically just a professional job.

I know I got the good 'ole boy price (except for the tip), but most everyone else was consistently in the $325-350 range. Not harping on ya Steve, but I hate to see you overpay if you don't have to. :m2: :)

And speaking of old cars, there was a 1927 Hup there also. VERY SWEET RIDE!!! Black completely restored. Looked like something out of a gangster movie!

When I put the Borla kit on my '03 Envoy SLT I had the shop save the OEM stuff. When I sold the '03 I had the Borla system removed and OEM put back on. Sold the Borla on Ebay for some good $$$. Depending on how your system works out, I am tempted to do one on my '05, if I can get one with no drone. In any case I will save the OEM system to put back on when I sell, or reinstall if the aftermarket doesn't work out. The OEM system is quite expensive to buy even at a discount.

I just called the shop. We're planning on Saturday morning.

I asked him about doing 3" pipes. He said if we were doing single he could but not with the duals. With the duals the pipes are going to be 2.25". When I'm there Saturday I'm going to see if they can make 2.5" work.

I also mentioned the DOD issue and he hadn't heard about it but said they would save the stock exhaust in case I need it later.

Also, he mentioned he could do better if I pay cash so I'll be hitting the ATM before I get there

They're going to remove the factory system and cut it in half so it could be put back together if needed.

He changed his mind on the price and dropped it to $425 total down from $450 + tax

There's a store around here called Car Boutique.

I got charged $130 for the Flowmaster 50 muffler, and $88 for parts and labour. Pretty sweet deal.

Yeah, though, the 50 series sounds pretty decent for an I-6. It's often mistaken for a V-8 at idle.
