Hey guys-

What size pipe did you use to delete the resonator? I measured it at the front and it's 2 3/4" (at the hanger) and 3" where it enters the tip. Also, what length is it (I forgot to measure and it's cold out right now :duh: )

Thanks

I was told they just replaced it with 3 inch pipe...i don't know the length..sorry

Length shouldn't really matter since whoevers doing it should be able to cut it to size. I used a 3" pipe and put a long 12" tip 3.5 in diameter.

I ended up measuring it, fyi it's approx. 24" from the resonator to the end of the tip. I'm going to just do it myself, that's why I was wondering what length was. I was also looking at tips and they come in several different lengths as well. Looks like I'll go with a Magnaflow 3" inlet 4" outlet by 12" long....

I just cut mine off, nice throaty growl, there is a harsh drone at 1900 rpm, I can see why GM added the resonator, but I like it. I'll post pictures in the ss gallery.

Just cut mine of as well. Put on a 4" x 24" polished stainless tip. Sounds and looks awsome. The 4" tip fills the exhaust cut out perfectly and doesn't look too big. There is a loud drone at 2000 rpm. Wondering if I change the muffler to a magnaflow, it might clean up that drone a little. Any ideas on fixing that drone without making it sound quieter. Wondering what you guys think. Will have pictures soon of the exhaust in my gallery.

is this the resonator!?:

I should probably have someone take it out for me since I'm asking, but how is it attached? is it welded onto the exhaust line?

I keep reading about this "Drone" sound, and without having personally experiencing it, I'm having a hard time imagining what this "Drone" noise sounds like. Can anyone compare it to something?

Floor vibrating and feels like you will get a headache. At least on my 02, it really sucks. Cant stand it and will be fixing it tomorrow pm hopefully.

I have some exhaust clips of before, without resonator and then I will grab some more tomorrow after I get the resonator.

I removed the resonator and put a Flowmaster Super 40 series on mine. It's stupid loud on accel...but idle is sweet. Gets burbley when you let off on the highway. Probably too loud for most folks...it resonates inside the cab at about 2300RPM regardless of speed. Everybody looks at it when they hear it...

The performance gains with adding this muffler and a K&N are unbelievable for only a few $ spent. The stock muffler must really have restricted flow.

Sorry it took so long. Here's quick video. The last portion of the vid is normal everyday driving. There is a slight drone at about 1900 rpm's. In my opinion, it isn't loud enough to bother.

I think is sounds better then it did, but i'm not completely satisfied. That 3 foot long muffler is gonna come out probably sooner then later. The rear bumper where the form is for the exhaust looks like a seperate piece. I was thinking that maybe an aftermarket piece made for dual exhaust could be fitted there. I'm not too experienced with fiberglass and simply cutting it out wouldnt look right. Maybe someone will sell one.

That has to be hella loud!! My 5.3 TB with a 50 series Delta was pretty loud. I ended up swapping out the muffler with a 70 series because the drone (especially when the DOD kicked in) was annoying on the highway. Around town though, I liked the 50 series better. The sound really made people's heads turn! :D

I had my resonator cut out today. I think, for the money, it sounds great. To me its like a teenager who's voice changed, you can tell who it is, there's just a lot more bass. Kind of sounds like a stock C6.

Compared to the other two cars, its still quiet. Perfect for a trip and no headaches.

I have to be a little careful. When I have to leave early to round at the hospital I can't be too loud. For that reason on those early mornings I can't drive my 396ci solid roller cammed, long tube headers, no cat, 4" Mufflex exhausted Camaro :D

Whats up doc
Did you get a offset in / center out...thats what the 12229 looks like.
I ordered up a flowmaster with that inlet/outlet and when they put the truck on the lift they told me it was a center in / offset out.
Flowmasters are not reversable....are the magnaflows reversable?..Don't want you to make a mess then have the wrong muffler bro.

Yes, Yes, And yes reversible.
Did the Flowmaster not physically fit?
If the piping is offset what difference does it make if you go 'center/offset' or 'offset/center'? Unless of course there isn't room to fit it the other way.
If I had my options I would've gotten a Hooker Aerochamber but they are not reversible and didn't come center/offset, and I couldn't be sure they'd fit in the space.

fredg369
04-28-2006, 07:37 PM
I don't think the size would have been a problem. The flowmaster is smaller then whats under there now.The stock muffler is the bigest muffler I have ever seen.
I found a hooker max flow on summit...They tell you its offset in and a center out which is wrong for the SS but then go onto say its flows in either direction for easy installation.

More flow than a 2 1/2 in. open pipe.
These Hooker Maximum Flow mufflers allow 99 percent more exhaust flow and produce more horsepower and torque than a 2 1/2 in. open pipe. They're constructed of aluminized and stainless steel and use high temperature packing material to absorb excessive noise, while allowing a rich, low-toned sound. As with all absorption-type silencers, the Maximum Flow mufflers will be most effective for sound control with lower compression (8.5 to 1 and lower) motors with conservative camshafts, and with applications using catalytic converters. The Maximum Flow mufflers flow either direction, allowing for easy installation.

The size of the unit is 4.75 x 10.25 x 14 inch case length over all 18 inchs

Do you see a problem with that fitting?I think it might be to loud for me with a 14inch case but thats just me.I don't like the drone.Thats why I'm going with the flowmaster 50 series delta flow suv muffler. Its suppose to have a chamber that helps with resonance.I'm sure it will sound pretty good..flowmasters have a nice sound to them.

I have to be a little careful. When I have to leave early to round at the hospital I can't be too loud. For that reason on those early mornings I can't drive my 396ci solid roller cammed, long tube headers, no cat, 4" Mufflex exhausted Camaro :D
So I put the TB up on the lift and SawZall'd off the muffler. Slid on the Magnaflow (12229 for reference it slips OVER 3" pipe at both ends). I needed about 17" of pipe to make up for the new shorter muffler. I have some U bend pipe but the straight section is only about 15". I picked up 17" and a 36" section of 3" pipe from a local Merlins. I used my 3 stainless band clamps and hooked it all up. On my setup the muffler slips over the 17" piece which then slips over the stock pipe that exited the muffler. The stock muffler is 3" in and ~2.75" out. I cut 4 slices in the 17" piece to better grip the smaller stock pipe. Started it up on the lift and it sounded decent.
Then for kicks I put on the 36" straight pipe. I again notched it with 4 cuts at the back end to fit the small stock pipe. For the front I just butt jointed it. I test fit it and ground it down at an angle to get it to align well (center/offset remember). That sounds like a BEAST  Not very loud at idle or cruise but at WOT it screams. I then drove to CostCo for a pineapple and some chips. After I scare the wife and kids I'll put the Magnaflow back on......I think.:D
I'll post driving opinions on the Magnaflow after I swap it in and go for a ride.

Swapped in the Magnaflow. Getting things sealed up on the back end took some crafting. I took a 3/4" section of 3" pipe and sliced in length wise. Then I cut out enuf so it was a tight fit over the 2.75" stock pipe. This enabled the 3" band clamp to grip the muffler and the 'spacer' over the stock pipe and seal better. If you're going permanent just slot the muffler and a U bolt clamp or weld it.
The 12229 Magnaflow is mellow, not too loud. Just a little louder than my previous !resonator setup and not nearly as loud as the straight pipe :D
I wonder what straight pipe with the resonator sounds like. That would be a cheap alternative that might be livable. I sold my resonator so I can't give an opinion on what that sounds like.
