Have read on various forums of TB and Envoy owners of the 2002 and 2003 years having to replace the fan clutch. Has this problem or potential problem been corrected, or are the 2004's and newer also at risk for the repair.

I understand the cost can run from $350 to $600 to get this problem resolved  The part is available reasonable on Ebay, but the R&R is a bish.

My understanding is that fan clutch problems are starting to show up in the '04 year models. Their is a factory bulletin with, if I remember correctly, a updated fan clutch assembly. I'll see if I can locate this info. and reply. If your out on the internet buying old stock...hmmmm.

The bulletin I saw, involves the cooling fan clutch assembly and relates to poor A/C performance during high ambient temperatures. Apparently, the cooling fan is not coming on soon enough which allows A/C system temperatures to rise. This rise is enough to trigger the A/C high pressure switch which shuts off the compressor. Just what you want to do on a hot, muggy day... This involves all '02-'05 vehicle built up to June, 2005. Vehicles built during June 2005 may have the updated fan already installed. Fan replacement also includes a PCM reflashing. TSB #04-01-38-019A.

04TBEXT, thanks for the info. Also, does the problem exist in the V-8's, or only the I-6?

The bulletin covers all divisions including Saab. It does not disseminate between engine configuarations. I therefore presume, I-6 AND V-8 are involved.

According to a poster on Edmunds, the part number for the newer fan clutch is 15293048 :)

Has Any One Tried Changing To An Electric Fan. Is It Possible?

The brainiacs of the forum have been battin it around however there needs to be some sort of way to fooling the PCM into thinking its still there. Does not seem to be a priority for the performance shop guys with the know-how.

Has not been figured out for the I6 but there are E fans for the 6.0 in the SS model.

Saving money must have been GM's top priority with this design. Most of your a/c equipped vechicles will have an auxillary electric fan for the a/c condensor in conjunction with a clutch fan. GM wants the clutch fan to do the whole job. It cannot in extremes of temperature.

For an SS, yes ADM makes a kit and Vector is working on one.

For our I6s, no one has made one work properly yet. People have tried swapping the clutch for a efan, but it throws so many codes and a Reduced Engine Power light so you basically cant drive it.

Im trying to find out if the ADM fan controller would work with the I6 and an aftermarket efan setup, but I havent found out for sure yet. I have the wiring diags and EFILive should be able to turn the codes off and still get a PWM signal from the PCM to control the efans via the ADM controller. Thats my goal, but I dont know if I want to risk buying a bunch of expensive parts only to find out they dont work and Im out $500.:(

I had an 04 with the 4.2 and the fan clutch was replaced at 30k miles.

I wonder what would happen if you just pulled the fan blade assembly off the clutch, left the clutch in place (and wired up) and slapped an efan in place of the shroud..:undecided You could wire a thermostatically controlled efan to that under-hood hot lead for the trailer harness I presume. I wonder if the clutch spinning unloaded would throw a code? I've got another year before I'm out of warranty to even worry about it...

Won't work because there would be no load from the fan and the clutch would simply freewheel with no difference btwn input and output speed. Likely set a code like the clutch is seized.

Got my clutch off ebay and it was the new OEM part. Watch out since the aftermarket is making this part now. This part is too much of a pain in the butt to take a chance with it not working properly. Not afraid of aftermarket but I would stick with the latest OEM in this case.

I scooped my clutch fan off E-bay for $135 USD, got a $50CAD hit for duty at the border, and had my mechanic put it in for $90CAD. Less than $300 start to finish. The part was OEM and new from Ebay. Part with taxes from Dealer is over $500CAD. I was quite pleased.
