Anyone have a 8 or 10 inch bass tube in their TB/Envoy. If so, how does it sound, and where is it mounted. Post some pics please,

My experience with Bazooka tubes with the built in amplifiers is that they are garbage. I think my sister had an 8" in the back of her Blazer and I couldn't hear it. You have to crank it up until it distorts and sounds bad.
However, years ago I had a friend who took a 10" tube and replaced the speaker with a kicker comp and put 200 watts into 2 ohms and it was really loud.
If you were really dead set on a bazooka tube I'd use an external amp. TB's have a handy dandy storage bin that conceals an amp nicely. The usual config I've seen for tubes mounted in SUVs is paralell with the seat back. The wheel wells make it clumsy to point it backwards (all the wasted space).

I wanted the tube because of the ease of removal and space. Unfortunately I use the storage area.

I hear ya, I used to have a 2 ft^2 box in my old Blazer and I hated the fact that I had no trunk space in my SUV. Kinda defeats the purpose. I built my own box for this car (http://home.earthlink.net/~jimmy_jam/trailblazer) , I pretty much plagarized the JL Audio stealthbox.
There are other options for mounting an amp, there is probably enough room under the front seats to mount an amplifier. I think I am going to try to cram my amp where the factory Bose Premium amp goes once I rip it out. My Alpine V12 runs pretty cool so I think it'll be fine hidden in the rear quarter panel.
I have to finish installing my component speakers this weekend, I installed the tweeters in the kick panel instead of the door for better imaging, painted them the same color as the carpet.. prepare yourselves for pictures

Nice, I may consider that. That way it looks factory and it is out of the way. Time for me to get the fiberglass out :)

I've never seen a self amplified tube that has impressed me, they always seem distorted... :m2:

Well I finally got the chance to hear a self amp'd 10" Bazooka. It was a factory option in his Scion XB. A guy at work has it. I should of asked him sooner. It did not impress me at all, not even for quiet clean bass. Some of it could of had to do with the volume in that thing. But I think it would sound very close to the same way in my TB.

That's awsome man. I too would love to have the JL Audio box for the TB, but I am sure it cost a lot of money. Again I am someone who actually needs to use the space back there for other things beside groceries. I might have a new project on my hands. Hopefully i can do as good of job as it looks like you did.

The idea about putting your own speaker and an external amp is not a bad idea...

You think what you have is bad, you should see the bandpass box with the two 12's I have taking up the whole cargo area of my truck. I would love to attempt to build that other box, but that would not go well....

I would always avoid self-amplified bazooka tubes. They not only sound bad, like most have said, add to that the fact that we return them all the time because they are defective. I hate installing them because I know they will blow and the customer will be pissed. I always sell them on getting the ones without the amp and adding a nice amp. They always sound better for those people who must have a bazooka tube. In the TB the best options I have seen are the JL Audio box or making a replica like jimmyjam did. JL Boxes are not cheap, but if you can afford it, they are worth the money. However, you can save a lot of money by doing it yourself - just depends on what you have money and time for.
On a flip note, I have a non-amplified 10" Marine Bazooka Tube in my Boat with a 600 watt Marine Amp - I LOVE IT!! It is so much fun looking at people's faces when I am coming in to dock and they hear me bumpin!! Plus it looks cool to see the water ripple away from the boat when sitting still because of the bass! Too much fun!

I have a 04 Envoy - no Bose, etc.
Still love my truck, but for a $30K truck the stock sound system is horrible!!! Even the bose I was not impressed with, so I saved the extra cash and upgraded my whole system for $300ish on my own.
First, I replace all the door speakers with Infinity speakers, got them from a friend who owns a shop for a great deal. Got all 4 for $150. I have seen them everywhere. Best bang for buck.
Next, I looked at base tubes because I didnt want to lose much cargo space with a huge sub-box. Looked at Bazooka, but they are WAY overpriced - 8" ($100), 10" ($200), 12" ($300)
I went with a no-name 12" 'Metrik' brand bass tube and it sounds phenominal. I got it on www.overstock.com. I was concerned about a no-name, because audio in general is not something you want to cut corners on. Like he said, you pay $100, you get $100. I have found 'Metrik' to be the exception. Check them out.
But my tube rocks. Exactly want I wanted. Sounds great, easy to install. Just enough bass for me, I listen to everything (rock, rap, techno). Overstock.com has both powered and non-powered versions of the tubes for easy hook-up. The non-powered 8" tube is $60? My powered 12" tube was $150.
I'm now looking for a new HU as the 'pale green' plain jain GM unit is freakin crap. The buttons are already fading and rubbing off. I can't stand the interior lighting on this truck. So dang boring. I want to change it all the be white. I'm looking at a double-din Clarion HU for $250.
Hope this helps!!!

Thanks, I will check those out. I am still waiting for on myself ;) to finish some other mods, but the bass will be my priority this Fall.
