View Full Version : Replaced stock resonator with a Magnaflow

I will get some pictures posted tomorrow in the gallery. The sound is louder than stock, and there is resonance still. I will see if I can live with it, if not I will look into adding a resonator after the muffler out of site. The over look is IMO 10x better than stock, and worth it for the apperance.

Pics going in the gallery now. I am keeping my eyes open for a factory resonator or comparable unit. Once that is done, I will have the sound of the stock setup, and the appearance of an aftermarket kit.

that does look a lot better than stock. I plan on doing something like that in the next few months.

Thanks. Once my wheels get in, and the TB gets detailed, I will snap all new photos. The pictures really do not do it justice. The only thing is I get funny looks by Honda Civic's and VW's  :D

So you're thinking of adding another resonator between the aftermarket one and the muffler? do you think it will fit? I haven't been underneath my car in a while (luckily)

Ok this is a stupid question but.... Here I go. Is a resonator the same thing as a muffler? :o I want to put my flowmaster on the TB but I wasn't sure if the thing on the end was what I wanted to remove or if it was what is underneath. :undecided I figured the thing underneath is the cat. RIGHT?

jimmyjam: I am not sure either, I need to look again also. I hope so, will get back to you on that one.
Mada123: The muffler is underneath. The resonator is at the end to cancel resonace. Unfortunately with the Magnaflow's staight through shot, it does not kill any sound.

How much did this Magnaflow cost you?

It was around $160, and $25 to install it. You can probably find a less expensive one on eBay, but I like keeping my local shops in business.

I certainly agree with that -- without the local shops, I wouldn't have anyplace to go where I can borrow a lift! I'm on a first-name basis with the mechanics at the shop I go to so they'll basically do, or let me do, whatever I want done.

Another stupid question..... :undecided ......so underneath there is the cat, muffler then resonator. Should you all replace the three, 'coz if you only replace one then i think it is still restricted which defaults the purpose of a free flow muffler?......

Even by replacing just one of the three you're significantly reducing the restriction, but remember too that an engine like the I6 needs a bit of backpresure to run optimally. :m2:

......So a free flow muffler or a (free flow?) resonator would be ok?....probably coupled with a cold air intake would give good results... :m2:

My thing is I don't want my car to be noticably louder. I just want something prettier than that ugly black can thats back there now. Can anyone point me in the direction of a prettier && relatively quiet resonator?

I would think probably, yes. I would leave the stock cat(s) alone, just do a catback solution and a CAI :m2:
Not to mention I'm not sure if it's legal to change out an OEM catalytic converter unless it's specifically bad. I've heard folks say something in the past about that.

try this, not too loud. Have seen and heard them on a TB. A little deep and throaty but not too loud.......http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7982071021&category=33636........ :m2:

The exhaust tone was only affected slightly to any outside person hearing me drive by or taking off. The resonance (drone) at certain RPM's 1200-1800 in OD is what you get. Some will not be bothered, but I am not completely happy with it. The radio on or the windows down cancels the drone, but I have customers from work to take to lunches and so on.

It would be a breeze if you have all the necessary tools..... :D

or a friend with one. I'm friends with a guy who works at an exhaust shop. I went in there after hours, put my 'voy up on the lift, took a sawzall to the stock turndown on my resonator, and mig-welded a fresh chrome piece on there. (I still have the stock resonator). No big deal at all :D

If the drone is bothering you only when you have customers, select 3rd gear instead of OD to avoid 1200-1800 rpm and use OD when you're at highway speed, that's what I do when I don't want to hear it. :m2:

Yeah, it is funny how it sounds normal up till that point. I was only using the customer thing as a point. I also am not a fan of the drone. I am trying to find a small resonator, or thinking of replacing the factory muffler with a quieter setup. I will fiddle around and see what works. My friend runs a muffler shop, so it is not to hard to get stuff done at cost :D
