View Full Version : Where did all the incentives go?

Is GM just giving in? It seems as if all the incentives have gone away. I was looking at the Envoy and it seems the only incentive available is $1500 off, plus whatever I have on my GM card. I did get the GM Card bonus of $2000 last month, but that has since expired.
I'm going to the NY Auto Show tomorrow. I want to see if they have any show specials.
Does anyone know of any other promotions? Or promotions that might be coming up?
Thanks!

Seems like GM has decided to shut down plants and fire workers instead of giving potential buyers incentives.

They do this almost every year. They will take away most of the incentives a couple months before model change over "July". If you are looking to buy and can wait a little longer wait until mid July or later. The incentives usually get better and better from July through January then start droping off until July again.

Was anyone around last fall when GM made the big deal about how they were lowering sticker prices??? Rather than inflate the sticker and then offer big rebates they lowered the sticker prices around $2k+/- and cut the rebates. When I was shopping TB's back in 2004 one built just like mine now was more money and it didn't have the V8 option.
When I bought my TB back in Feb the rebate was only $1k now it's up to 1.5k.

Remember last year...GM selling vehicles @ GMS??? Do you think they wanted to give the customers a break?...hell no! They wanted to unload year end inventory and keep feeding the financial-bleeding pig..GM Corporate. The big thing about lowering prices?...Do you think they lowered THEIR prices..hell no..thay can't. The monies they payout to build a vehicle makes them uncompetitive on the global market. If you want to know how they lowered the prices, just let me say the factory-to-dealer mark-up on a Cobalt is about $300.00. ....go figure.

Be glad the rebates and incentives are going away. Every rebate and incentive makes the TrailVoys on the road worth less. When you trade yours in and get dirt for it, thank the GMS and all the rebates.

That thing last year wasn't really GMS. You could actually haggle and buy cheaper. The dealership where I bought my TB and several other GM products is also where I worked PT for awhile and my friend is a salesman there. I remember talking to him at the time and he said that that whole deal was kind of a joke because I could have bought cheaper than the so called "employee price"

Spong is correct on the "wheel & deal" part, but GMS is GMS...it is not a ficticious number, but an amount of money the vehicle is sold to the dealer at without additional charges, such as, advertising dollars, financing, etc. The actual GMS price will be found on every vehicle invoice from the factory. It is unfortunate to say that most consumers don't even know what an actual factory invoice looks like and in today's world of computers and printing devices, a close facsimile is not difficult. So showing a customer "the invoice price" can be nothing but a ruse. Secondly, vehicle trade-ins give a dealer leverage. Tell the customer you'll sell him a new vehicle @ GMS minus $100.00 and then appraise his trade-in $100.00 short....Customer wins!..you do the math..
Kinda reminds my of a story regarding the pushy customer. Mr. Smith continuously "beat up" the salesman to get the best price on his new car. Mr. Smith ragged and ragged and ragged even after the salesman told him he would help him with the pricing. At the closing of the deal, Mr. Smith leaned over to his salesman and whispered in his ear and said, "Bob, you give ME the best price and f*ck the next customer....Bob the salesman looked back at Mr. Smith, leaned over to his ear and whispered back, "Mr. Smith, you ARE the next customer!"

My point was the promotion was billed as "Employee Pricing" but it really wasn't.

According to GM, vehicles sold to GM employees, their relatives, dealership personnel and maybe others are entitled to GMS pricing. This is the same GMS figure offered to retail customers back when "Employee Pricing" was offered. My friend purchased a Tahoe Z71 during this offer and paid GMS pricing. I saw quite a bit of our inventory leave the lot @ GMS pricing. So, the "Employee Pricing" offered to retail customers WAS the same price alloted by GM to their employees, etal.
Encapsuling my previous post, many other "deals" are struck when cars are bought and sold, many "smoke & mirrors", but "Employee Pricing" at that time, was employee pricing.

I guess we must be thinking about different things then because at this dealership anyway, the so called "Employee Pricing" was NOT the same as GMS.
Also, with GMS you can't use GM card earnings and you could with this event.

GM promised (threatened?) to end incentives with lower MSRPs that were closer to the real world pricing needed to move their inventory.
But I don't think (virtually) continuous large incentives are good for the long term health of a car manufacturer...haven't seen that business model yet. Maybe that was in the Economics for the Enron Generation class I opted out of...
Price a competitive product, built well, that people want, and you usually don't need them too often. (Substantial ones, anyway...I don't know that $500 or even $1000 counts as a "real" incentive on a $30k to $40k vehicle...)

Well as long as the UAW has GM by the balls, their product won't improve or come down in price. GM might be better off going bankrupt and getting out from under the UAW and then starting fresh!! All these foreign brands don't have the UAW problem so they have a huge advantage over the Big 3.

Spong,
Hear yee!....and tightly by the balls, I must add. You hit the problem "dead on". You could consider that the fact quality of the GM product has improved slightly, but no matter how you cut it, their labor problems are their biggest ball-and-chain.
About the employee pricing, any dealership can advertise "employee pricing" anytime they want. If they used this ploy at a time other that the actual GM program, it wouldn't surprise me a bit. Ever hear the commercials where they (the dealer) were given a "special allotment of vehicles from the factory" or was "authorized to sell off these vehicles at prices below normal cost"???
The sales schemes are many, and your idea about different sales pitches using the same title of "Employee Pricing" makes the most sense.

I was just at a dealership on Friday looking at TBSS's. The Gms price was $1500 more than the employee price on the one I priced out. Plus the employees get another $1000 off for a total of $2500 in difference.

Darkside,
The employee pricing I discussed (at the time my friend bought his Tahoe Z71) occured prior (last summer)to GM's new pricing structure (today's pricing where we see less/very little incentive offers). There are now (4) price levels in the GM pricing structure. As a mater of comparsion, here is the pricing structure of a base, unoptioned 2007 TBSS 2WD. This pricing excludes freight, advertising, etc.
$30,915.00 MSRP
$28,905.13 Dealer Invoice
$27,978.08 Dealer Price
$28,053.08 Employee Price
Hope this clears things up.

That looks right, although the price differences I saw were much larger. I think the MSRP was around 38k and employee price was at 33k, not including either incentive.

Those people are over paid and under worked for the product they are putting out. GM would be in much better shape if the UAW wasn't trying to drain them for everything they got...

That's why America is the way it is. The foreign companies pay workers dollars per day while in America, workers get paid "real" money. That's why GM is in the pickle it is, can't compete with import car makers because of the salary issues. You can't fault UAW because of GM's pricing/marketing woes....I mean come on, if GM had any sense whatsoever, they'd introduce the new Camaro NOW to compete with the Mustang, Challenger....not in 2010....it will be obsolete by then. They'd sell tons of the new Camaros NOW!

The current incentives are good through July 18. New incentives come out on the 19th. I bet they will be big. GM has to do something to compete with Ford and Dodge. The new incentives should be similiar to last years employee pricing. I don't know for sure but I think this will happen.
