As I read about Envoy and Trailblazer owners wanting to upgrade their sound systems most of them want to upgrade their 6 disc indash changer to a navigation system.
I want to upgrade from a factory non-Bose single disc player to the factory non-Bose 6 disc indash changer. Will it be a direct replacement and workable? Will the wire harness be the same? Has anyone done this switch?
Which 6 disc changer would definitely be interchangable with my single disc in a 2004 Envoy.

I want to upgrade from a factory non-Bose single disc player to the factory Bose 6 disc indash changer. I understand that the Bose units work with an external amp in vehicles that they're installed in but does anyone think this would be a problem with my non-bose Envoy not having an external amp? Do you think it would be a direct replacement and workable? Will the wire harness be the same? Has anyone done this switch?
I think that you have to have the external amp for the BOSE system to work. I hear that the volume and some other features are controlled via that amp in the back quarter panel. :m2:

Yep, exactly correct. The headunits on bose trucks puts out a signal that is "pre-amplifier" much like an old phonograph. Without the amp to boost that signal (and it's a quite unique signal to the bose amp) you'll get no sound. :m2:

You're better off getting an after market double din HU. :m2: I don't know WHY the aftermarket stereo companies haven't put out an in-dash 6-disc changer... the only in dash changer I've seen is an alpine 3-disk magazine which was really ugly. Maybe because a CD with MP3s on it is equivalent to having 6+ discs of music...

It is.... but the audio quality of MP3 can be much less than CDs, depending how they were encoded. So I agree, I'd rather see an aftermarket HU with a changer in the dash :m2:

It doesn't have to be the Bose unit.
All I want is the 6 disc feature that only GM indash radios have.
Is there another 6 disc GM unit that doesn't require an amp to work correct that will work?

What headunit do you have now? You may be able to custom-fab one of the 6 disc changers like the yukons and escalades have (separate from the HU but still in the dash/console. :m2: The "AUX" function should control it I would think.
