jallshouse 06-29-2005, 08:29 PM ok...this may be a good one to stump the regulars.....i am looking for the part number or size/name of the bulbs that backlight the gauges in the instrament panel? I have been searching for awile with no luck....here is what i am up to lol....when i had my honda civic the gauge faces i had kina blended into the numbers at night. To correct this what i did per NR guages rep. was slip some bulb covers over the lights to change the color of the backlight. i want to try this in my TB to see what i can do with the number color next to my NR gauges white face setup. if i can go to blue i am going to get the blue/satin needles from USSpeedo...i think blue would look good with the blue exterior. here is the link i was looking at with the bulb covers and the decription they give for sizes

Thanks in advance for the help now i will set this question free to let the wolves have it......game on!!
Jman423 06-29-2005, 08:43 PM I THINK those are just LED lights in our trucks. They SHOULD not be hard to replace with any color, but thats just me saying that because I am comfortable with soldering and such... :m2:
jallshouse 06-29-2005, 08:45 PM the dude at NR Gauges said they are standard bulbs instead of LED's that most other vehicles now use.....he just didnt give me a part number or size

I could swear that I saw a pic of one of those cluters "out" but still hooked up, I thought they were LEDs, but like I said, I could be wrong...

Thanks very much for the info.....i am going to tear the cluster out today if i get a chance and check it out, i will let you know the count.
jallshouse 07-02-2005, 07:18 PM i got an update on the dashbulb mod....not a conclusion yet though :duh: i tore the cluster out today and after playing with it i found that you cant get into the bulbs without pulling the needles (not a problem as long as you take a digital photo before you pull them while vehicle is running to replace in correct position when done) i could see in enough to tell that i think i can get those little bulb covers i posted origianlly but still not sure how many. i think i will order some of them and give it a shot. it dosent look like the bulbs are LEDs and it also appeared that they are soldered directily on the circut board
henrywp 07-04-2005, 01:04 PM Can you take a pic of the circuit card with the led's soldered onto it?
jallshouse 07-04-2005, 01:38 PM i sure can, i will get you some as soon as i can get time to tear it out again. i am not 100% sure they are soldered in, becuase i would have had to pull the needles to make sure, and my mom was using the digital camera for the weekend (so i could take a pic of the needle positions). it lookd as though they were judging from the back of the circut board
jallshouse 07-04-2005, 05:54 PM here is a pic of the bulb

jimmyjam 07-04-2005, 06:01 PM Cool, I bet you could put some colored saran wrap over them...
jallshouse 07-04-2005, 06:16 PM thats kinda what i did...just until i can get the correct bulb covers i was sitting here trying to think of what to cover them with when it dawned on me :duh: i looked over beside me and noticed that the Dasani water i was drinking had a translusent blue wrap label. i proceeded to cut pieces that would fit over the bulb and used clear tape to secure each end down. this is VERY cheesey, but i figured i would give it a shot :D . i will update as soon as it gets dark

Or stop at a pro photography supply house and grab the color gels they use for studio lights and par cans. :m2:
GreaseMonkey 07-13-2009, 05:22 AM Been scanning all the many, many threads related to dash/cluster bulb replacement and I'm still searching? Would love to have the part number for the replacement incandescent bulbs GM uses behind the instrument cluster and/or the part number for a suitable non-OEM replacement, thanks! Getting ready to tear into my cluster and replace a burned out bulb behind my speedo (surprised, anybody?). Not ready to go LED just yet, wanna keep 'er as near to stock as possible for now. Any help to this end is greatly appreciated, thanks all!
ontogenesis 07-13-2009, 10:30 AM The bulbs in the gauge cluster are incandescent and soldered onto the board. GM doesn't have a p/n for them, when they go bad, the dealer replaces the entire cluster (dumb). However, IIRC, the bulbs in the cluster are the same as the bulbs in all the controls and you can get them at Radioshack for $1.69, part number 272-1154. Specifications are as follows:
12V, 50mA
T-1 bulb
3.3mm bi-pin base
0.12MSCP
Average life: 5,000 hours
If I were you, I'd just put in some LED's though...there're a few companies that'll convert your gauges to LED's for you if you wanna go that route and don't feel like its something you can tackle by yourself, but I'm not sure what the going rate is.
GreaseMonkey 07-13-2009, 09:01 PM Thank you for your help Ontogenesis! Yes, I may well go the LED route someday...probably when I've torn into my cluster for the upteenth time to re-solder *yet another* dash bulb. Seems like an issue we Trailvoyers are simply destined to negotiate at some point in the time we own these vehicles. Until then, think I'll take the 411 you've been kind enough to provide and run with it. Thanks again so much. Now cover me, I'm goin' in!
ontogenesis 07-13-2009, 10:50 PM Good Luck!
