Yesterday I stopped by the dealership where I purchased my TBSS and the sales manager has a silver TBSS. He had the rims chromed last week by the company that chromes most of the Corvette rims the dealership sells.
A picture of the rim is at: http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/brusters/ChromeSSRim.jpg
They look sooooooooo nice. Cost $800. The center cap is plastic and is expensive to chrome.

Do you have a photo of the entire truck showing the chrome wheels so we can get an idea of how it looks on the SS? The up close shot doesn't quite show what the final product will look like.

I'll try to get by the dealership tomorrow and take several of the entire vehicle and post in the evening. He may not work on Mondays though.

See if he'll give you some contact info on the place that did them. I have to do something about these wheels, the factory "polish" just isn't cutting it for me.

:iagree: The factory wheels are definitely lacking shine. I have had wheels polished and chromed before, and on the right vehicle, they look nice.

True, I would buy aftermarket rims but I can't find anything I like for under a 1000. Plus, I really like the design of the SS rim...very simple.

The company that did the wheels in located in Diamond Bar, California. There web site is: www.chromeyourwheels.com (http://www.chromeyourwheels.com) I am not associated with this company. I have never been there, just trying to help those who might want an alternative to having their wheel chromed.

It's the dealer sales manager's private truck. He's also supposed to receive a cai from K&N any day now, since they used his vehicle to test the setup during pre-production.

Some are into appearance, some into performance, some into both. If this SS owner starts into performance, then the GM warranty becomes compromised. He will let the next owner do his own mods. In the meantime he has a sweet TB SS to demo.

How much does chrome plating add to a polished wheel? 1#? 2#? :undecided: For some it is appearance, others it is go.

Go to a discount tire direct. They offer the service for about $800. Many wheels they stock for direct exchange. I checked on ours a couple weeks ago and they did not have any nationally in stock. Doing yours will take 2-3 weeks. Wait a while and they will likely have some for exchange.

Chrome is an option when ordering. You're saying the dealer gets them from somewhere else?
The below is from an Escalade:
18-in. 7-Spoke machined aluminum (Standard)
18-in. 7-Spoke chromed aluminum (Optional)
22-in. 7-Spoke chromed aluminum (Optional)

they send the cores (non chrome) in to be chromed then get installed on to another. tires stay wheels swap. its done all day all the time . i worked for a company that would go to the dealer pick up the cars , trucks, suvs, what ever and swap them out we would lift lower and install custom wheels also.

In CA it is probably cheaper for dealer to have wheels chromed than order from factory. GM charges a lot for chrome wheels . In my area the trucks come from the GM factory with the chrome wheels. No chromers in this area can handle those big items.

Dealers do that when either they dont order the truck with chrome wheels or if they want to chrome a set of wheels that you cant order in chrome. for example, my GTO doesnt come with chrome rims so the dealer would contact people like where you worked and they would have them chromed. If you order the truck with chrome wheels, I am 99.9% sure that they come straight from the factory like that. If they did what you say they do, it would make no sense. Thats like saying all the delaers send out the SS wheels to have them polished.

Keep in mind that chrome takes some work to keep them looking good and like new, especially in winter, which is most likely the reason most vehicles don't come that way from the factory. The polished rims use a clear coat finish, which protects the metal much the same as a painted rim would and is cheaper to boot. How many Corvettes are driven in the winter when salted roads are the norm?.....not many, and keep in mind that buyers of Corvettes and other vehicles in that class are meticulous about keeping things clean and polished. Most TBSS trucks aren't going to sit parked in a garage during the winter, they're a SUV.....especially the AWD ones, its a perfect all weather vehicle.

I'm actually debating this now. :undecided I'm sure it will handle the snow quite well, but I don't know if I can stomach watching salt build up on it. :( Maybe I'll feel differently in a few months.

Chrome wheels are easy to take care of. Just as easy as painted wheels but you just have to throw a coat of wax on them every now and then. The wheels I just got for my GTO are polished and non cleared (Boyd Coddingtons). You want to take about a pain to keep clean? Im almost regretting them since its my daily driver and you have to constantly polish them and they scrattch pretty easy too. I know the ones on the TBSS are cleared and that makes it easy. I think they look great chromed and Ill probably do it for the TBSS but get another set of wheels and tires so I can use the polished ones for the winter.

JuniorSS is right raw billet wheels are the hardest thing in the world to keep clean, but when you open the box for the first time it's like opening a jewelry box. Junior try using Zoops seal on your wheels. It works great. I have a set of colorado customs. It's pain full to even wash them with high calcium water. Ah the price we pay to be cool.

All I have to say is that; I have a 2000 Buick Regal GS with factory chrome wheels that look fantastic right now, this with only normal washing and an occational polish. The rims on the SS should have been chrome from the factory!!! I can only imagine how cool my black TBSS would look with chrome wheels. How would chroming them make them easier to keep clean than before? Would they look cleaner longer, probably a little but not much. You should look into some ceramic pads, it will cut down on the dusting. Mine get cleaned once a week so it never really gets that bad. :D

Chrome wheels are very easy to clean compared to stock SS wheels because you can use wheel acid (properly deluted) as long as the wheels are not hot. And it is perfectly safe as long as you mind the dwell time.
And btw wheels can most certainly come from the factory chromed.
