View Full Version : Oil Change

I had an oil change the other day. I had the high mileage oil put in it since I drive my TB a lot all over b/c of training I have for my job. It's got quite a few miles on it already. But I cannot believe the gas mileage difference an oil change did. I use to use almost a quarter of a tank taking my g/f to work then going to work. Then going back to get her and going home. Now I barely touch a quarter of a tank doing that. Man what a difference. Anyone else see differences like this with just an oil change?

That seems like a much more drastic change than anything I've experienced, but there was a definite difference when I swapped over to Mobil 1
Of course I'd only had the truck for about 3 days when I made the switch so I only have one tank on conventional oil to speak from. :m2:

Not in my case, I was using regular motor oil for about a year before I changed to mobile 1. Nope, no change in my consumption. :(

I opened my wallet and put Mobil 1 in my TB yesterday. We are going on vacation next week pulling a 3500 lb boat and all the stuff that goes along with it. I will be anxious to see what kind of milage I get with the full load. I also have a K/N filter in it too.
You'll never make up the cost difference for synthetic in gas mileage but your engine will be a lot happier which should save some repairs in the long run. It is probably one of the best things you can do for your vehicle.

We noticed a large change in the Trailblazer and my SIlverado when we put my Amsoil in the engine and diffs. Also drove much smoother, very noticable when coming to a stop or going around parking lots at slow speed.

Ive heard this theory about synthetic, so when I do my 50,000mi home checkup (ATF, Gear Lubes, Oil, etc.) will all be with Amsoil. In fact, I have 2.5 gallons of ATF sitting in my garage. I am doing a full ATF flush, and I prefer 1 big container over many small ones.
I know switching to synthetic helps a little here and there, its worth it to me to make sure my truck lasts. :) :m2:
i have been using mobile 1 for a year now, changing oil every 5000miles ,instead of 3000, with regular oil, i also add motor silk during last oil change, got about 1.5 mpg on the highway more, and about .75mpg around town more, asengine felt smoother excellerating

I decided yesterday when I was changing the ATF to just fill the pan with synthetic, I didnt have enough time to do a complete change and flush. :x
That just means I have enough left over to do the transmission in my other suv. :D

how does everyone feel about the GM Oil Life monitor??? I did it for my first oil change, and I didn't get one until 9,463 miles!! I just don't understand it, what does everyone else think of this?? :undecided

I will go back to using it because I am running full synthetic, so I am planning on changing it around 10,000mi anyway. Lately, when Ive been running petroleum oil, I have changed it around 3-5,000mi. The oil life monitor is up to you, I think. 10,000mi on conventional oil is a little long, I just changed the oil on my TB and Rx300, and both had around 5,500mi on the oil. It was very black and dirty. :o I wont do that again! :D

The ONLY reason I rely on the oil life monitor is because I figure if GM installed it, and I follow it, and the engine seizes up due to dirty / low oil for going so long then it is their fault correct??? Or am I over symplifying??? :undecided

i asked my dealer about that, and it would not be covered if it seizes, the dealer said dont go by the oil life monitor i run full synthetic and change mine out about every 6 to 7 thousand miles, i want to keep mine running for a long time,

I couldn't see them covering that. If you were to reset that to 100%, but only put in like 4 quarts of oil...then it could be your fault. What i'm saying is the oil life could read 50% and really only have 30% left. So by the time that light goes on, you've already been running with nothing left. I usually change mine around 50%, give or take.

Yeah I'd rather spend $20 to change my Mobil1 oil every 5k miles rather than fight with the dealership to get them to fix my neglected engine :m2:
There are a lot of vehicles with 10-15k miles oil change intervals out there. That way they can advertise cheaper maintenance. It is not that big of deal for most people in North America but a synthetic oil change is about $130 in Germany. They pay about $5 a qt for regular oil.
I personally change my synthetic oil every 6-7K. IMO 3k is a waste of money and oil while 10k may hurt your engine in the long run.

Jimmy, where are you getting mobile 1 for $20? I just bought some and it was $6.50 a quart. My 7 qts and filter was $49 and some change and I still have to change it myself.

Walmart sells Mobil 1 5W30 in 5 qt containers for about $20.80. Makes it a lot easier to recycle by dumping used oil back into the big jug.

Can't say that I have seen that type of increase. Maybe a little but not enough to attribute to being from the oil change.

Last week changed oil to 5w-30 Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic and the tranny with the GM synthetic and the front and rear diff also with 75w-90 GM Synthetic and changed to valvoline Synthetic brake fluid and the K&N air filter. She drives like a brand new truck! Filled her up 6.5 days ago and still have a lil more than a 1/4 tank left..I dont think anything but the oil had been touched before I did all that... kinda scary but shes good for now(knock on wood)

My grampa dose alot of 5th wheel pulling with his chevy trucks he puts about 35K miles on them a year. Hes retired and loves to fish and camp so he drives all over pulling a large 5th wheel.. Only uses mobal 1 oil and changes his oil filter every 5K miles but filters his moble one oil through a screen than puts it back into the truck.. He only changes his moble 1 oil once a year and is on his 3rd chevy truck with over 300K miles with out any problems other than batterys and altinators dieing..
I now only use moble one but I change mine every 4-5K.. My dad allso uses mobal one and insists you dont need to change it at any less than 10K miles.

I think they have had a price increase. Was at Sams Club last week and Mobil One 6 pack of quarts was $29.00

I used Mobil 1 in all my cars. Mobile 1 Clean 5000 to be exact. Lately, I have been taking it the quick lube place here. I know the owners and workers. So, lately, it has been getting Castrol GTX. I have noticed that the truck runs smoother after the oil changes.
Even my wife noticed, and she doesn't know too much about cars......:x

I just had my first oil change, I went by the oil life monitor. It didn't come on until after 9k. I kept checking it though after 8k and it still looked good, good color, etc.
From now on though I'll probably do 5k, as the TB gets older I'm sure it'll be more worth it to keep the oil fresh.
