Does anyone know what wheels record mileage in the TB, front or back (or both)?

The TB gives you an advantage over most vehicles, it allows you to put all the wheels in neutral via the transfer case while the truck is turned off and the keys are removed. Knowing that, will the TB still add miles with it turned off?

betting it record the miles regardless.

I am betting its the back wheels, and you really shouldn't tow that thing with just the fronts on the ground. What are you trying to accomplish?

I'll bet it doesn't record with the ignition switch off. It's not a mechanical odometer.

I think you are asking about towing the Trailblazer behind a motor home with all 4 wheels on the ground.

The speedometer/odometer use a sender on the output shaft of the transmission. With the key off there is no power to the dash cluster anyway. With the transfer case in nutral and the key off I don't see how it could record the mileage.

There might not be power to the dash cluster, but the cluster is simply displaying what the computer wants it to. Will the computer record mileage? What if I take off the battery terminal and kill power to everything, that should take care of it, correct?

That makes sense. But I have heard people say that if you get a new cluster the dealer has to program it to the correct mileage. So maybe thats not stored in the computer? ok......dang it.....go test it out for us. Now I am curious. :D If it is in the computer, then cutting battery power should work. If its in the gauge cluster itself, then maybe just having it turned off will do it.

The cluster is what stores and displays the miles. When you replace the cluster you have to have the new one programed to show the same miles as the old one. Regardless with the transfer case in nutral the output shaft on the transmission will not be turning while you are towing the Trailblazer.

Ok, so with the transfer case in neutral and the truck shut off, I shouldn't register mileage. I'm gonna go push it down a big hill to test it out before it makes it's 2,000 mile journey behind a U-Haul :D

OR JUST USE A FLAT BED TYPE CAR TRAILER AND IT WILL BE OFF THE GROUND COMPLETLY

I doubt you could pull a flatbed behind a U-Haul. Even if you could, it would probably cost more than the mileage.

Uhaul rents flatbeds that are meant to be pulled behind there trucks. As I recall, it did cost a little more, but I was towing an MG that I didn't wanna risk towing with a dolly. Personally, I won't tow with those crappy dolly's that u-haul rents. Thats just my opinion though. I jsut prefer the flatbed type.

I've never seen flatbeds, you learn something new everyday :D

I am right on the mileage for my lease, this move will be 2,000 which will cost me $300 (15 cents per mile over the limit I believe my lease says). I figure if I could get away with the dolly and not racking miles on the truck, I will be set.

Why do you recommend against the dolly? If something happens, U-Haul and Gap Insurance pay while I get my choice of a new lease, no?

Well...I had a jeep burn up its transfer on one. It was outta gear when we pulled out, I know cuz we pushed onto the dolly. It slipped into gear at som point and burned it up. I have also seen cars come free on the dolly. I didn't see it happen, just the aftermath. They hit the breaks on the truck, and got rear ended by there own car. I just prefer to get all 4 wheels off the ground. Makes me feel better about it. The car seems more secure that way. I am sure the other way will work fine for you, its just my personal preference.

U-Haul actually states on its website that it does not recommend towing rear-wheel drive cars with a tow dolly. It says if you do tow a rear drive car on a tow dolly it is recommended to disconnect the drive axle (who would ever really want to do that?). Not sure how this applies to the TB since it is RWD/AWD...

Just from what I have heard, you shouldnt tow a TB with all four wheels on the ground. Heck, even the owners manual says not to do so. I wouldnt risk damaging your transmission, transfer case, and axles to save a few bucks. A new set would cost a lot more than just putting it on a car carrier for a little more money. Thats my opinion anyway.

The owners manual does not say not to tow 4 wheel drive Trailblazers with all 4 wheels on the ground. Page 4-33 in the 2003 manual has the prociedure to use to tow with all 4 wheels on the ground.

ehall, I would take GM's advice for the TB over U-Hauls generalization (trying to make one recommendation that will cover all vehicles).

Scarab, I wouldn't tow it with all 4 wheels on the ground.

I was disputing where you said "heck even the owners manual says not to do so" the owners manual says you can tow a 4x4 Trailblazer on all 4 wheels.
